Grade my proposed .308AR build. Comments/Critiques/Experiences welcome.

Waiting to hear back from AeroPrecision. I sent them the same pictures I posted here and some comparison pics of the AR10a and AR15 bolt catches that I stole from your thread >:D . I basically suggested to them that the part they included was not the right part for the job and if they could trade me out for for a larger one (ala AR10a type). I'm not holding my breath, but we'll see. If not then I'll be biting the bullet on this one and ordering the Armalite part. $27.95 for that stupid POS from 762sass.com after shipping! And Armalite is even worse!! They want $19.04 freight shipping on a part that weighs less than 1oz!!! <nutkick> -

Hey man! I appreciate the offer on that. I may take you up on it if it doesn't behave well when I switch out the grip to a Magpul +. But in it's current state I'm OK with it for now. Thanks again! -Adam -

You don't understand... The catch is fully seated. I plunged that button as far as it would go into the hole with the end of a dowel and screwed in the catch. Threading it any further and it just starts sucking the button down into the receiver frame making it a PITA to actuate the release. Translation... the fucker is too short to thread properly, and the catch piece appears too shallow to allow a good solid engagement On a related note, I stumbled onto this and think I may have round my answer: (See survivalshop's post #8 ) -

So I got around to installing my LPK last night. It went OK-ish. The trigger was a pleasant surprise. The pull weight is what you would expect from a mil-spec trigger, but it had virtually no creep and a nice clean break. I think it will be just fine for my intended application. I might go with some JP springs to lighten it up just a bit if I do anything. I wasn't impressed at all with the mag catch I was provided. It doesn't look like it engages nearly enough and I have serious doubts that it will actually hold a magazine. The other bitch I have is that even though Aero threads the hole for a set screw to contain the takedown pin spring and detent, they don't provide said set screw... The work around was easy enough. Just sandwich the spring and pin with the pistol grip the same way its done for the safety selector so it's not a big deal, just more of a WTF? It sure is big compared to its little brother!! (And yes that cheap piece of plastic will be getting replaced with a MOE+) HA  -

Could use a railed block if its with a carbine gas system. -
Bahahah! Thay was funny. But OK, since you put it that way, what I was going to say was in regards to your concealed carry speedo car washing was that you're not fooling any of us. you would never be "That" happy to see any of us well except for Tom maybe. oh and don't worry about that duck waddle you got going on. we all know where you like to hide your backup piece and we will totally believe you when you tell us it's because you pulled a hamstring in a foot chase! ;) hahahah!

Here's hoping. :) I tried to play it smart with the operating system... rainier headspace matched barrel and bcg, dpms buffer assembly, and an adjustable gas block to dial it all in. We shall soon see. -

My upper (Aero P) has that same FA. Consequently Aero has come out with a bolt carrier that has the serrations. I would think that PSA would be using that one or one similar... I opted for a chrome plated traditional style BCG with a matched bolt from Rainier over a functional FA that I could care less about. -
I'm a new guy here... read your story and I'm very sorry for your loss of a loved one. I really hate this for you man... Sending my prayers for you and your family's comfort.

So the final order went in at Brownell's today. Ordered the carbine buffer kit from DPMS for .308, a gas tube, the Syrac Gen II gas block, an A2 flash hider and crush washer, and went ahead with the Midwest Industries FFT. If it becomes an issue down the road I'll upgrade it and use the MI on something else. Total cost for every thing shipped was $353.12 which puts me in at $1359.15 for the entire build.... which I USED to think was a good deal until those assholes over at PSA started selling complete free floated uppers for $599.00 and a complete matching lower for $299.00 <nutkick> Official weights and pictures will follow when parts arrive. Based on everything so far I should be within a couple ounces of my original projection. -
I think they showed that scene a few times during the game last night... Cards looked like sh!t on offense through for the first 3 quarters BTW.... Hope that was just Week 1 jitters...

Damn. I didnt know Tucson was getting it that bad. Were getting a steady soaking down where im at. The San Pedro is running pretty hard and cloud cover was all the way down at the base of the Huachucas when I left work. Lots of standing water in the roads..

Hope you guys aren't drowning up there in the Phoenix area. Praying that y'all aren't effected too badly by the flooding going on.

Hello from AZ Ronald! Great bunch of folks here with plenty of knowledge to share. Here's my little tidbit being a relative newbie here myself. GUARD YOUR WALLET! As in have your wife reset the combo and lock it in your gun safe before you log on to here!

Hahahaa.... You might be waiting a while on that one! But I promise you I'm no plant. I love fast cars, loud guns, big titties, and baseball (in no particular order) and he who dies with the most toys wins! <thumbsup>

Damn man that is a steal for 599.00 That FFT is 170 on its own. Any barrel worth its salt will be 270+. A complete BCG for 200-300ish depending on the parts and 30-50 for a charging handle... Id say PSA did you right bud. :) Not to mention you get to go back on them if it doesnt feed like a champ! Good stuff right there.

Sweet! Welcome from Arizona. :)

That's the problem with the whole .308 AR world. There is no mil spec like there is with the AR15 so there are no guarantees that everything will be plug and pray. The best rule of thumb is to source your upper and lower from the same place but in your case it was a gift and it's a custom piece so what do you do? Maybe the place that made your lower has a matched upper that they sell with it? That gap might be a concern and it might not. have you run any ammo through it yet? Does it cycle properly? For reference, here is a pic of how my Aero Precision upper and lower fit together. Bought them together as a set. It's a pretty tight fit.

Thanks edge! It's got a long way to go yet, but it's getting there.. The next decision I need to make before I get much further in is whether or not to send off the receivers (and the hand guard I don't have yet) to get cerakoted. The whole tungsten grey w/ black furniture is really speaking to me right now... so is burnt bronze... OTOH, I don't have a true 100% "evil black gun" in my collection... maybe this one should be the one. :D (stainless steel barrel notwithstanding)
