Back when I kept up with my friends that shot the Palma the host country furnished identical rifles for the match usually their military's long range service rifle. Okay, I sometimes reply to older postings, I even had a comment on the Ten Commandments when Moses posted them.....I still have the mallet and chisel I used on the Exodus site.

One thing that kept the homefires burning was that I wasn't home a lot during the first forty years. But being retired the last ten years took some doing also I spend a lot of time in my shop. Until recently I kept busy doing restorations on old cars....lately I have went back to my lifelong love affair. With guns primarily rifles revolvers and Colt and Ruger pistols....my favorite is my 1911 and 1903 Colt automatics. I never cared for the AR 15. I did have a Sterling tin gun once. Now our folks that want to take away"Assault rifles" with 100 round"clips" have given me a new "itch" and my new DPMS ORACLE 308 is doing the scratching.

Well I know what is bigger than a bread box but I never was much of a pecker checker,I have been happily married for almost 50 years. I have checked a lot of pins and pin holes just never measured any on any AR.

Thanks blue. Since I don't have anything to gauge what is big or small I was lost

Looking at Timney trigger is the DPMS Oracle 308 trigger and hammer pins large or small? What is the diameter of small pin?, large pin?I have used Timney triggers in Remington 700s Springfield 03s,03A3s and really were satisfied with them. Anyone had gripes with then in the ar 308 applications? Thank

Back in the days of open sights longer barrels also meant longer distance between rear and frount sights(longer sight radius) which moved minute of angle further down range, hence a sense of longer range accuracy. Now more perfect optics and better mountings and more precise elevation and windage adjusting devices along with more precision machine rifle barrels have made shorter accurate rifle barrels possible.....IMHO.

Well.....it could be that if you are building a"custom" rifle that cheap there has to be something wrong with it! You need to send one of your sweetist builds to an secrety expert, like me, to critique and write a glowing review and post it all over the worldwide Ethernet and then double your price.

CAUTION..... I use a lot of B-12 carb cleaner in aerosol cans to clean small engine and old Chevrolet carbs. Be sure to wear good eye protection any time you are using carb cleaner,it will go right toward your face just like your eyes are magnetized. It is rough on plastic and skin.Just one spraying on your clear plastic safety goggles will ruin them so that tells me the stuff can blind you.

I shot with some of the world's best centerfire competitors back in the 1970s one of them was George Tubbs (David Tubbs father) and they used steel cleaning rods because soft rods and coated rods get embedded with small pieces of hard grit that do more damage to the bore and muzzle than slick steel rods. Many of these shooters used rod guides on their service rifles (National Match M1 and M 14 rifles) used at the National matches.

I AGREE, These free manual sites are getting hit by copyright lawyers. I can see where it is okay for decent manuals for guns still being sold and aftermarket manuals that are written to be copyrighted and sold, but for guns and items out of production or from gun companies not around now manuals are next to impossible to find. I appreciate any one that will provide manuals and schematics for these oldies.

mrmackc replied to charlie52usaf's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
I finally got the hang of being so concerned about problems on my fav forums...........You need to check the dates the discussion started and how it morphed to the present year, month, and week before going ballistic on some flaw that was fixed year before last. -

.308 Operating, Safety and Instruction Manual
mrmackc replied to imschur's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
Okay folks, I have been reading the owner's manual instruction book for: DPMS modern sporting rifle. I must have missed something. I see about cleaning the bolt key (bad nomenclature) but nothing inside the complete gas tube or the gas block. It gets kind of nasty after shooting a couple of magazines of Remington 150 grain factory ammo. What is the best way to clean the gas tube and gas block? I downloaded the Bushmaster manual, it is good but nothing on the gas tube. Thanks, -
Need a better setup for handling paper targets

I use a combo of real estate for sale sign holders and politician signs .If I liked the candidate I'll spray paint the sign. But if I don't like him/her I shoot to kill the O,B and A, letters. I also use some stick on relector strips like go on the back of semi-trailers for the laser boresighters, just dont be lazy and shoot up your refelective strips! On odd years I just use cardboard. -
I just bought a new in the box DPMS LR308 for less than $900, added a new Bushnell scope and mounts and out the door for $1100. I am a retired gunsmith and I am satisfied with the rifle and scope. I added a Uncle Mike detatchable front sling swivel. Don't really like the Burris high mounts, It makes the scope ride 3" above the bore. You will also need a laser cartridge type of boresighter or do it the old way of looking thru the bore.I have a Weaver sight and low mounts I took off my custom 1903 .3006 Springfield deer rifle. I always go low power scopes unless It is a 500 Yard rifle. The Bushnell is a 1X4 variable and the Weaver is a 2.5X. Only after having 70 year old eyes have I even went to a scope only because of eyeball focusing problems. I am kind of used to shooting milatary rifles right out of the unit armory. First learn to shoot before you start trying to use the rifle as an excuse for poor marksmanship. Just MHO. What really pee-od me was a gun store wanting $35.99 for a aerosol can of Remington Action Cleaner. I'll just use WD40, Hoppes#9 a good brush and elbow grease. That has always worked in the last 50 years! If I don't see you for a while...MERRY CHRISTMAS and Happy New Year.

What made you decide to move to the 308 AR/AR-10 Platform?
mrmackc replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
Okay ON the sopping wet. I have noticed the rifle appears to have been cleaned and oiled before being boxed, the box was fresh from DPMS. The action isn't very smooth like my M1 or Mini 14 are. I use lubriplate on them. -
Hello! I am an old codger, brown shoe Marine, retired oilfield engineer, retired part time licensed gunsmith, a NRA life member, NRA Rifle Pistol, Shotgun and Hunter Safety Instructor. I have several rifles pistols and shotguns, a M1 Garand that I bought for $98 from a mail order gun store in 1961, I transitioned from the M1 Cal. 30 (3006) and a BAR (3006) to the M14 (7.62 NATO .308) in the Marine Corps. I never fired or owned an M-16 AR-15 or an AR10 until yesterday when I bought a new DPMS Oracle .308 and put a 1X4 Bushnell AR scope with Burris mounts and am waiting for good weather to go to the range and do some sighting in and fun shooting. I like to hunt deer, rabbits, doves, ducks, pheasant, squirrels, feral hogs coyotes, I live in Comanche County Texas, with my wife Darlene and puppy dog Sunshine.

I am an old codger, brown shoe Marine, Retired gunsmith, expert marksman, life NRA member from 1975, NRA Rifle Pistol, Shotgun and Hunter Safety Instructor. I shoot my M1 in service rifle local competion, shoot my Colt Gold cup in bullseye and Winchester Mod 52 in smallbore competion.....Have a custom built springfield 03 3006, Ruger mini-14. and I shot M1 Garands and M-14, BARs in the Marine Corps.. ...BUT I never fired or owned an AR-15 or an AR10 until yesterday when I bought a new DPMS Oracle .308 and put a 1X4 Busnell AR scope with Burris mounts and am waiting for good weather to go to the range and do some sighting in and fun shooting. .. ..Now, I have more questions than a congressman on steroids. I have read some stuff and wondered about if it is really necessary to buy DPMS CLAW oil and lube the innards, or would 30 WT Quaker State work just as well. I am one to do thangs by the book, but also like to sift out the B.S. Thanks for letting me in the room... even though I do live in Comanche County Texas. <thumbsup> P.S. I like to hunt deer, rabbits, doves, ducks, pheasants squirrels, Ferel Hogs coyotes, and Ham sammihiches! and my favorite could be BaconCheeseburgers
