  1. I started with the H2 buffer today, and the 125 gr Hornady FMJ's. Most ejected, but a few failed to lock back on the empty magazines with the H2. When I exchanged the H1 for the H2, the bolt started locking back on the empty mags, but still didn't pick up a single second round off the top of the magazine. I then switched to the 110 gr Hornady SP's which did lock back on an empty mag, and also picked up and chambered the 2nd round twice.. with the second magazine which contained 3 rounds, the first two went boom, and the third round "locked up" the trigger. It appears the third round chambered, but did not allow the bolt to enter battery, (hence the hung up trigger)... when I attempted to operate the charging handle, it too was "locked up"? I pulled the rifle off the bag, and began to get more serious with it, it did indeed pop an empty out of the action, but I had 3 empties, and only two booms?? I proceeded to load a third magazine with two rounds, I had not inserted that magazine, when this all dawned on me. I picked up the third empty, looking for a firing pin strike and saw none, what I did see was a new primer, examining the chamber revealed a bunch of unspent powder in the chamber, and peering into the breech revealed a real pretty 110 gr. Hornady SP... so I took some WD and blew out the chamber and upper receiver of unspent powder, and put the "Dirty Little Thirty" back in the case. I shot "Little Miss Wilson", next who functioned fine, other than dribbling the empties out of the chamber? (yeah, I need to open up the gas block a little) but I'm not doing anything until I get the "Dirty Little Thirty" running... Sorry for the book: I called Wilson Combat and and Lamar initially offered to send me another barrel and allow me to return mine when I received theirs? I told him fine, but then the supervisor nixed that solution and wants me to send my barrel to them, and then they will send me a barrel,,, maybe, they only had one left and its not fluted... I told Lamar I thought maybe the ammo had a weak crimp, and he suggested that it was almost fully chambered, and that I pulled the bullet when I muscled the charging handle back, he has been very supportive and apologetic, but he's right, they do have very tight chambers, and I think its highly likely I did indeed "pull the bullet"! the bullet wasn't really stuck, and light tap on the cleaning rod popped it right out, a forward assist would have likely put me in business, but I'm all billet, all the time, LOL... So, I popped out the bolt and popped her in the gun vise and gave here a good cleaning, I cleaned it with a wet patch, then gave it a very good brushing, then I pulled the bolt apart and cleaned and lubed that up good. I've fired almost 30 rounds, and I had not cleaned the bolt, and there was quite a bit of carbon build up, I had to scrub it with a brass brush and solvent to get it cleaned up... Honestly it is a very tight chamber, the whole rifle is tight, so I'm going to be patient and keep breaking it in.. that little deal today is a good reminder to "clear you bore", especially with a new magazine fed weapon... I can always swap barrels, but I really, really don't want to do that, I like this rifle, it groups very well for all the goings on, and I think it will slick up here shortly... I also made sure to let them know how disappointed I am, relating the safety channel being only half bored out, so Lamar was very apologetic, and said their CNC machines are running nearly 24/7 and they are in a hole and trying to dig out, he thanked me for my patience and sent me a return sheet... so here we are, I still love this dang thang, it will work! 98 you're warnings about this half breed 300 were well spoken, that pile of 300 Ham'r ammo is damn near gone, but I have enough to get me through this break in period... they rest of you can pray for me, I need it on a number of levels, lol!
  2. So hopefully I can get the "Dirty Little Thirty" out for a successful test run tomorrow, I'm gonna start with the H2, which is currently my heaviest buffer, wish me luck, I did actually get a little more 300 Ham'r ordered thankfully, Since I ordered the first time, most of it is no GONE! All the more reason to get that loading bench set up, and get our Rock Chucker on there, I better get those dies ordered PDQ!
  3. Thank you Swiftab, that is a gorgeous reloading bench, even Mrs. Billy commented how nice it was, now if I can just get Swifty to come up here and help me with the install! I'm gonna have to get in to that wall and give it some muscle in order to get that gorgeous bench up to speed!
  4. I hear ya, my poor little 1951 FN, (later to become the Browning Safari, yes she's damn gorgeous), 270 Winchester embarrassed poor little Miss Wilson at the range last week, Miss Wilson was so mad, LOL! she ripped of 20 rounds and said, I betcha can't do that!
  5. You would be the only kid on your block with one of those Doc! LOL, but if you've got your heart set on it, go for it!
  6. Good Job, you should come meet us in Clarksville, Tn tomorrow, I'll buy you brunch, 10:30 AM!
  7. Yes Sir, its our cousin and he has an outside wood box away from the house, he's been running wood for years, and I'm thankful for all that crap we get off the farm, kinda like thistles... It's beautiful wood, I'd love to have a custom take down recurve laminated with wood from the farm, its is really pretty, and the trees they cut yesterday were very clean and straight... I concur on the locust, it does burn hot, and the secret is to let it cure and get as much sap as possible out of it, you can also mix it slower burning hardwoods. I have run a woodstove as my only heat in Central Mo when I was in college and pastoring a small church, course we always had a fireplace, and burnt wood at home. My Mom and Dad were thrilled when they bought a fireplace insert, and we had a ducted collector and fan's on each side, so it put out a lot of heat.. Its important to have a tight firebox that you can actually damp down, I love a nice wood fire, my brother in law cuts a LOT of wood and sells it... My Heavy H1 and H2 buffers came in today, and I put the H2 in the "Dirty Little Thirty", I ordered some 10 round Lancers, some FDE inserts for the handguard, a short rail section for a bi-pod, and a little more ammo. I can't wait to shoot it, but I'm meeting Swiftab tomorrow, so a nice little drive for each of us and I'm really looking forward to meeting him and setting up a proper reloading bench in the basement... I'm gonna have to tear out my old bench, take down my Father in Laws old pegboard, and pull the paneling off to make sure I have enough support, I'm afraid I need to put a few more two by fours in behind that paneling, all fun, I can't wait! There was one can of CFE 300 Black left, so I attempted to buy it, come to find out it was an empty display....
  8. So I had built my rifle with a Rise Armament RA434 trigger when the Wilson did not show up for nearly two weeks, damn nice trigger, but a freak show to put in, had to drop the grip, pull the safety, install the safety, then safety would not cross the top of the trigger, so I dropped both pins out of the trigger, reinstalled the safety, and then pulled the trigger back up and pinned it with the anti walk pins. That was such a pain.. Well the Wilson 4 lb drop in trigger came, and I decided to stay with Wilson, dropped out the Rise Armament, of course had to drop the grip and pull the safety, took the trigger out and reinstalled the safety. To my surprise the Wilson trigger would not drop in , (its supposed to clear the safety and drop right in), so I had to pull they safety again, and install the Wilson trigger, well surprise again, the safety would still NOT go in. So knock the pins back out of the Wilson, thought I could get by with just the back, but NO, had to drop the front pin and push the trigger down hard, over and over again, and I finally got the safety in, the raised the Wilson back up, and had to fight with the pins again, but finally got them in... All good now, but what a pain in the butt, the Rise Armament actually had a much nicer pull, but it was a little loose in the hammer/safety channel, and I like the way the stock Wilson pins lock in, theres a small wire d-clip inletted into the side of the drop in trigger, it ain't going anywhere.. So I dropped a couple of quarters into the buffer tube, re-installed my spring, I was going to shoot, but the boys were cutting Thorny Black Locust for firewood, and I did NOT want to interrupt that... I hope those heavy buffers come tomorrow, I'd like to see this girl run!
  9. Mark Steyn for President! Rush's own, undocumented anchor man! with the election and Rush's Cancer, I'm in a full blown "Blue Funk"! who is gonna rally the troop's now? I get the Pres is an acquired taste, he would have never made it without Rush.. Like Dr. Dobson was to the Christian World, Rush has indeed been the guiding light to the "conservative movement". The voice of calm and reason, Rush is indeed a national treasure and Steyn is the only one of his guest host's who might, in a long shot, "carry on"! Mark does have the ability to humorously illustrate the insanity of the left, and we are damn sure gonna need a sense of humor!
  10. That's what we like to hear, good diagnostics have and a two piece gas block have you in business, congrats Wessir!
  11. Yes Sir, the Aero Precision lower gets very high marks here, and that would be your most advantageous solution to your problem, return the PSA upper and parts and go with an Aero M5 upper receiver, buy a complete upper if you can find one?? I saw that somebody had some upper's and lower's in stock just recently, but I don't remember whom?? Hang in there Brad, and please introduce yourself on the appropriate introduction thread if you haven't already. Welcome to 308 AR, the best gun forum on the internet, just ask us! There are some very knowledgeable and helpful gents here who will help you sort these details out...
  12. Yes sir! I think we should by stock in the company, and now Wilson's amazing supply of barrels and 300 Ham'r ammo is drying up as well!
  13. Yes it did my friend, no doubt it did, that's exactly where the "Dirty Little Thirty" is sitting right now,, and yes waiting on those two heavy buffers from Brownell's is indeed like waiting on Christmas. I've got the 18 inch Tactical Hunter with your favorite "intermediate gas tube"! LOL damn thing. I know it will work with one of those heavy buffers, a damn fine single shot rifle as it is??? anyway, I stuck to Wilson Internals to avoid that trouble, I think I saw Rainier had a 4.6 oz heavy buffer in their buffer kit! I could probably buy an adjustable gas block, but I don't want to have to pull that stinkin handguard off again.. the small frame handguard is a lot different than the large frame.. and they only send you 1 barrel nut shim. In any regard, I'm hoping for cure with a 3.8 or a 4.6 buffer from Brownells, kinda ugly and plain, but it ought to do the trick...
  14. Now that is cool Mr. Raley, I have run my "scanners" over M-14 0001 at the infantry museum at Fort Benning, also played the golf course, but the M-14 was a presentation model, and I can't for the life of me remember to which of our worthies it was presented to at the moment... I rather doubt I have ever admired a weapon any more, than I admired that one, it was absolutely a freak show gorgeous! Are you still in Central Obamastan my friend, or have you departed our frozen gulag on the grand prairie?
  15. You would indeed sir! LOL, wouldn't keep you awake at night either would it?? LOL
  16. and here we go, waiting on a couple of heavy buffers myself!
  17. You got that right, I've still got a slab of side meat in the freezer, I need to make me some "chittlins"! Got porky burgers and sausage too, maybe even a ham roast.. Yes Sir! when you put hog's down at the packer, its a single .22 right behind the ear! But that skull plate, shiet just bounces off that damn thing.. my old man had an old sow "whoofin and huffin" at him, she had baby pigs, and she kind of come at him. He had a claw hammer and just whacked her good behind the ear, she dropped like a ton of bricks, I mean "lights out", it took her 10 minutes to come around, he thought he had killed her... Don't get me wrong, my Dad was NEVER mean to animals or mistreated them, but that damn hog did NOT know who she was messing with...
  18. Yeah! we all would, I'd just like to get my "Dirty Little Thirty" running, that thing handles like a Merkel over and under, perfect for "wing shooting" wild boar! I did shoot "Miss Wilson" yesterday, but my 1951 FN 98 Mauser in .270 Winchester showed us both how its done! LOL My little 98 Husky 4100 Lightweight shoots awesome too, I laid down some amazing groups with that thing this summer, once I put that limb saver butt pad on her, but I never realized how bad the trigger is on that thing!
  19. Yeah, I hear ya, the first deer I got with a bow was Bambi! He sure did eat good though!!
  20. Yeah, here we go, 98 will be your back-up. I know its a little scary, but you'll be fine! just wear your earplugs, lol, when that big hog charges you and 98, he will open up on all that ham and prolly melt that barrel! that would make a great movie, you guys should have TV show!
  21. oh come on, that made a great story, HOG's are tough, so don't forget your 20 round magazine for that .308. True story, my Dad decided to improve our herd through breeding, and bought two, very high dollar boar's. Beautiful animals, but when the ride home was over, they began to fight, before we even unloaded them... They continued to fight, and fight, and fight, we tried to separate them, but the only thing worse than a hog fight is probably "horse breeding", (that's the ugliest damn thing I've ever seen in my life)! and you dam sho don't want to get in the middle of that... Long story short, it was one very expensive day for the old man, those basker's fought to the death, when it was all said and done, they both dropped over DEAD! You got off easy, and provided us with a lot of entertainment, I think you need a "Dirty Little Thirty" That is a big hog, and I've seen some big domestic hogs, bottom line, I'd prolly start with a .30 cal, and work my way up! LOL, I wish I had that on tape!
  22. and maybe even more important, how much you've still got to learn....
  23. Yep, where are we at on this Rev, which bolt stop did you end up using?? what type and brand of magazine, if they are all Pmags, try an ASC steel mag or other?? Did you open the gas block all the way up like 98 suggested,,,, don't sell it, let these gents help you figure it out, we've got it cycling, now we just need to put the brakes on it when you're out of ammo in that mag. It's possible you need a heavier buffer yet?? report back sir, we would like to be successful here...
  24. Yes Sir! we don't want that happening to "The Dirty Little Thirty"! I'm loving this little rifle, and it does want to shoot. I've been running the range at 65 yds so I can kind of see whats happening, its fun watching those .30 call holes snuggle in together.. I took this to the farm to shoot yesterday afternoon my friend, and thought, I'm gonna wait till 98 and the 308 AR crowd weighs in on this, thank you gentlemen... I know a hell of a lot more now than I did when I joined this forum! Sadly, when you start to understand the mechanics of common house hold AR's, you realize just how little you actually did know before...
