Thanks gents! I'm so glad I decided to go with the lightweight option dpete. When I was deer hunting I too picked my shot instead of shooting at the entire deer. "Aim small, miss small."

What do you have on order or in the mail? Part 2
BrianK replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
Not currently on order, but in testing. I ran across a new technique for shooting certain specific handguns by rising the red dot and cheeking it as seen in the video below. Specifically in my case a Keltec CP33. I was dubious at first, but I had parts to get it done and it's a stable shooting platform done that way. To get it done I had to remove the arm brace and that also got rid of my field expedient (but long term) method of slinging the handgun. But one of the videos (below) that I watched had a solution. The CP33 has these tiny things on each side at the back. What are they for? I haven't a clue! But there is a company making camera slings and the attachment "cables" work fine and the sling is of high quality. It came in, has been installed, and it works fine. Previously I would sling the handgun with it's arm brace and not even know that it was there. This is even lighter. FWIW, there are lots of videos about the technique on youtube. I need to practice live fire, but in dry fire it sure does seem to work. Cheek shooting technique, yes it's definitely weird, without a red dot it couldn't work for me or maybe anyone else: The sling, yeah, it's different too and not intended for firearms but works for the CP33: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0781QV3H4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I know that soft serve joey has ATF on doing something evil with arm braces and I figured I had the option of SBRing the handgun but ATF has enough of my $. This technique keeps the handgun a handgun, no SBR tax needed. -
Welcome to the forum! What a bummer that it can't run handloads!

I forgot that I can't leave and come back to edit a post on this forum. So I'll ask my question here. Sorry, this post has me demonstrating that I can write endlessly. But I'm leaving it as is. How much penetration did you get with that Maker load? I'm just curious. I can't get out into the woods anymore so it's not a hunting question. If I shot a deer in the morning it would take me until the next day to drag it out. Aging and everything that comes with an aging body isn't for sissies. I'm using the 85 gr Maker because I don't want an exit if I ever need to use them for HD. If one graphs the depth of penetration based on velocity it's a bell curve, penetration increases as velocity increases and becomes less once one goes past a threshold. I forget the numbers but @2300fps and 1000 ft/lbs I would expect the bullet to stay in a 2 legged maggot at HD distances. I know I wouldn't want to be hit by one. But then I wouldn't want to be hit with a .22 rimfire short. Accuracy with them is fine, <1" @ 50 yds. Much better than I need. Paper punching... I cast a few hundred 220s last fall, had them all ready to load and was just waiting to develop a load. I must have put them in a very safe place to prevent riff raff from finding them and walking off with them. Only now it turns out that I'm the riff raff. I can't find them. I also got a new mould for 150s. I'll cast a mess of them and the plan is to load them both super and subsonic. But it depends on performance. I'd like to get a load or loads that I can use for an unsanctioned match that is said to be an ongoing yearly event. I'd like to use my arm braced 300BLK handgun for it. Last year some targets were out near 200 yards, so supersonic would be great. I'm trying to remember what powders I have that would be suitable, W296, Lil'Gun, N120, a small amount of A1680, Trail Boss, and I think I've seen data for Power Pistol, and another that escapes me. I should be able to work something up. 4227 I don't have. Mags... When I built my handgun I saw 300BLK Lancer mags for the same price as 5.56 mags and wanted more 5.56. So I bought the 300BLK specific mags and that freed up 5.56 mags. My understanding is that they have stronger springs and the offending ribs have been moved or are totally gone. I examined them and compared. I just forget what I saw. Would I use them for 5.56? No. Oh well, enough rambling.
-
Thanks. That's nice expansion even at that velocity. My loads will definitely be different. I don't have 4227. But I have other powders that I can use.
-
I can't remember ever seeing 300BLK for under $1 per round.
-
dpete, is that a Maker bullet? I think I recognize the 3 petals. If so I load his 85 grain bullet to 2300 fps to limit penetration but maximize ft/lbs for HD. But anyway, interested in the bullet and load data for subsonic.

Welcome from central Maine!

I would have preferred to edit the above, but that isn't an option, so a new post. Everything is back in place and where it should be. But w/o subsonic ammo the combo of handgun and suppressor is going nowhere (for now) since the can is only rated for subsonic. 300BLK first, toys later.

Not most for sure. Gents, this will be different, so brace yourselves. For your consideration, yes I was skeptical too! Not every handgun will allow this hold. Know that coming in. I have a cp33 that was arm braced until yesterday afternoon. I removed the brace and converted it over to OEM. The shooting platform is steady done this way. At least in dry fire. I have not put live rounds through the handgun yet. Yes, the sight is best when raised up about 2" but I didn't do it with a $100 riser as suggested in the video. I had stuff on hand that was much less costly that did the job. I used the same red dot I had been using right along. I intend to take it to a steel challenge match to test it out. I couldn't do that with the CP33 arm braced and not SBRed. But they allowed me a test run. It was faster than my present SBR .22 but I wasn't going to pay the tax to make it permanent. This cheek weld requires no tax and it's extremely stable done right. BTW, he doesn't much like the CP33, but some folks know how to make guns work and others don't.... They also don't know pf the public forums where it's explained how to fix the issues. Nothing more needs to be said. Mine works fine with eccentricities that I know to expect and know how to work around them.

The barrel was delivered. SSK looks to have done good work and they crowned the barrel as well. Kudus to SSK! Tomorrow I'll reassemble everything, but since it's a range toy and other things are ahead of it don't expect data until I get my 300BLK up and running with it's loads. I did lose the threaded hole for the front sight, but I expected that and since I can't use iron sights anymore so while it's a loss, it's really no loss. This barrel uses an optic 100% of the time.
-
Thanks! That's good data 98Z5V! The heaviest bullet data I could find was 150 grain. Did I already write that? Anyway, for those who don't know, when the velocity is capped the only way to get more energy into the bullet is to up the bullet weight. My barrel is on the brown truck for delivery very soon. Then I can reassemble the handgun.

But it is .308 in my barrel even if in a 140 year old cartridge. If not OK just delete it. Not a big deal. Not a new gun or barrel, in fact the barrel is probably close to 30 years old. It's a Contender in .32/20 and designed to use .308 bullets. Back then barrels weren't normally threaded. I sent it out for threading because I wanted a 300BLK barrel for the Contender but didn't want to spend the $400ish that was wanted. Then remembered the gun safe and the .32/20 barrel. It should sorta be similar to the 300BLK in performance esp' since I'm now loading for subsonic so it would be my "300BLKish" cartridge in a quiet action. I don't intend to push things. I have a mould for 150grain bullets and 220 gr bullets, and other bullets on the shelf and on hand. My supersonic .32/20 load pushes a 125 gr bullet to under 2000fps but I don't shoot many of them and my can isn't rated for supersonic loads. I have a mould for 220s should I wish to go that heavy. But frankly I have no real use for the cartridge so 150s might be fine for plinking. Anyway, UPS tells me that tomorrow it will be back in my hot little hands and I'll be able to reassemble things and other than other projects in front of it, it being on a back burner, I can start to get going on it. Oh, so why didn't I just buy a 300BLK barrel? I priced them out at $400ish and I couldn't find a factory barrel. I did consider rechambering the .32/20 but I have lots of brass so why not use it? At my age I'll die before I use it up. If anyone has load data for heavy subsonic loads (150, 200, 220) I'd appreciate having it.

Yeah. It was my way of downplaying it. I hate a mushy chest. Never had one but I just know I wouldn't like it.
-
Thanks! That reinforces my belief that the 10.3" barrel for my HD handgun is one of the 2 optimum for my usage, but 8" also would have also worked for me and made for a smaller handgun. Or put into other words getting the most I can while not having an overly long handgun when the can is on it which is pretty much 100% of the time. Except when I'm developing a load, then it wears a blast forwarder just in case of bullet instability. I could have had a handgun with a 12" tube if I had gone with an 8" barrel, since the can adds another 4" to it. If I built it for hunting I would have gone with a longer barrel. I'm actually surprised that 3" more barrel yields that much more velocity. (5" vs 8"= 318 fps but that's what the "book" states in general for rifle barrels) Would I want to be hit by a bullet out of the 5"? No. I think it would hurt.

Dittos what Blue wrote. The magnifier statement is BS as you surmised; the reticle should be clear with or without the magnifier. No wonder the place is going belly up. When Eotechs first came out I bought one, liked it and bought another. I didn't need the armor so I removed it from the first one. I removed it from the second one also. The holes on the first one were threaded with matching screws. The second had self tapping screws and one was stripped. I called Eotech to discuss their lousy assembly and wad told that what I was holding in my hands didn't exist. Basically, don't believe my lying eyes. I stopped buying them and returned the one I had. I have no use for a company whose techs lie. I even told him that I had the parts in my hands, but it made no difference to him. No, what I was seeing didn't exist. I've moved on to other red dot sights and they also get much better battery life than Eotech.

Welcome to the forum from the real central Maine! (Southern Maine is NOT central Maine! But they want to get us to think they're "us". They aren't.) PCS= permanent change of station? (PCS that can change again?) Correct?

Dittos what 98Z5V wrote, the 300BLK is an amazing cartridge. I would have accepted baseball size groups at 50 yards for my intended use, but instead got 1" and smaller groups from my 85gr bullets @ 2300 fps @ 50 yards with my AR handgun. But I'm not done with load development. I never thought the cartridge would be this amazing. I just wanted it to take the place of a 12 ga shotgun for HD and I got so much more.

Even though it may look like a rifle it's actually a handgun unless registered as a SBR. Please don't give ATF additional fuel for their unconstitutional acts. FWIW, whenever I allow someone to handle my AR handgun, I explain that even though it may look similar to a rifle, it's actually a handgun by definition. I do that 100% of the time.

Glad it's workin' out for you DPete! Sounds good!
-
Looks good! It certainly is small!

I never knew such a thing existed.
