.308 AR Free Float Tubes, Hand Guards, Quadrails
Robocop1051 replied to imschur's topic in .308AR Parts
Anyone fit a Magpul MOE handguard on their 308 yet? I saw a pic on THR of a DPMS sporting a black carbine length MOE. I lost the pic and the name of the owner. I remember reading that, while very tight, the handguard fit with little resistance. -
What is the best Bolt Carrier Group available for the .308 AR?

Max effective range from 16 and 18 in barrel
Robocop1051 replied to chriss1727's topic in General Discussion
A while back, Imschur posted a link here to an article about shorter barrels. I have since emailed that same link to a LOT of people. -
I found this on accident. This is going to save me a bit of money, as I have a HUGE surplus of extra AR15 lower parts. What was going to cost me between $50-$100, is now only costing me about $20!

This was originally posted on AR15.com by "Carbine_Man" on 12/30/2009 DPMS LR-308 Lower Receiver Assembly Do not trust the schematics in the DPMS dealer catalog! Mine (2009) had many errors that I only discovered by accident. Having just tonight completed assembling my LR-308 lower, I though you might find this useful. Essential LR-308 Lower Receiver Parts Many AR-15 lower parts are compatible with the LR-308, but the parts listed here are NOT AR-15 COMPATIBLE and must be included in your build. DPMS part numbers to the left: •308-LR-18 - .308 Front Pivot Pin •308-LR-30 - .308 Rear Takedown Pin •308-LR-11 - .308 Bolt Catch •308-LR-12 - .308 Bolt Catch screw Other things to note: •The pivot and takedown pins are 9/32". •The magazine catch, spring and button are AR-15, but when assembled correctly the threaded rod part of the catch will be about 3/16" short of flush. I used a 10-32 set screw ground to fit and filled the hole. It looks much nicer. •The 308 Bolt Catch Screw has a 1/16" socket head. Very easy to assemble, just screw it snug, I used a little blue Loctite on the threads. •The pivot and takedown pin detents and detent springs are the same, but the takedown detent comes up from the grip rather than from the back. I found that cutting a small (>1/32") divot in the grip to hold the bottom end of the spring kept the spring from squirming to the side while tightening the grip. •All fire control parts, including the safety selector, are identical to AR-15. I installed a RRA NM 2-stage trigger with no problems. Hope this helps,

What is the difference between the 5.56 and the 7.62? I'm asking because I'm in the middle of my 7.62 build and I have a lot of 5.56 parts laying around. I'm pretty sure the Buffer Tube is the same, and I can assume the Buffer Spring in the 5.56 is weaker than the 7.62 (but I'm not sure)... and I have no idea about the difference in the actual Buffers.

Are FA and DPMS the same BCG???
-
I bought the AFG1. Very comfortable to use. I can see and understand the applications for competition, but for long range or CQB I still resorted to old habits that were more comfortable and adaptable for different situations. I found that the AFG was really only beneficial for me when all my targets were directly in front of me. Target to target acquisition in a 30ish degree arc was awesome. For work, I had difficulties maneuvering through rooms and clearing buildings, and maintaining that deep grip. I needed a much more compact grip. It deffinately requires a lot more practice to get used to.

Fulton Armory is having an end of summer sale. They have their BCG listed for $246.46 (after the 15% discount).
-
They have been out for a while. I have a handfull of them around here somewhere. I put them on G3 mags originally, but I plan on putting them on my new rifle once I finish the build. A store here in Sacramento, CA sells them 3 for $9. Pretty decent price.

When is Magpul going to offer us 7.62 mags in all their fancy color options? Is an OD 20LR too much to ask for?

What do you have on order or in the mail?

Has anyone ordered the new 15.5" VTAC hand guard yet? (u don't know if they make it for the 308 yet) -
PS. This was in response to a post I made on ar15.com regarding my original plan to buy a JP LR-07. I've already started my custom build since then. PPS. I was already through my third glass of scotch when I got the email from Costa. So please excuse my exaggerated excitement in my previous post.

I got an email today from "The Man" himself (if you consider Chris Costa an authority in black rifles) "Ive been running the 14.5 [JP LR-07] and man what a gun, the only negative is the gas block if you were to go or find yourself in a combat arena because it doesn't have set positions, But man can this gun shoot, I run either 168 or 175 and it is a same hole gun, and it is fast so fast that I'll probably run it in a carbine course with my knights EMC. There is a lot that goes into these guns, John Paul the owner jumped into one of our courses and really explained the gun down the the barrels and bolt groups and how they all run together. I believe the price you pay is definatley worth it. I shoot my JP a lot it is like a carbine to me. The JP is top notch same hole gun low recoil, only negative is the gas block but I just watch mine and I haven't had any problems. The Larue OBR is same hole gun it is also a very nice gun as well and definatley worth the money too. The knight EMC is the combat gun of choice for certain tier one units and it is a great gun very accurate my 16 is a same hole gun, only negative it the price, but you are getting more gun and are paying less with this new system. Costa@magpuldynamics.com ;)" Just sharing....

There's nothing longer than "rifle-length"??
-
Is there a measuurable difference in ballistics and/or bullet performance when you compare the varying lengths of gas tubes? I have seen every type of barrel-length:gas-tube combination. I'm looking at buying a custom 18" barrel and I want to optimize my performance.

When the modules first street coming out I was very intrigued in the McCormick flat trigger (just because it was different). Now that the JP EZ trigger is available, I have a whole new outlook on things. I really like that they give you both a 3# and 4# spring. At the rate new parts keep coming out, I'm never going to finish building this rifle!
-
Anyone bought or tried one yet? I'm torn between the McCormick, Timney and the new JP EZ. I have to say JP makes a strong argument supporting their triggers...

Phase #1 of my build is complete. I ordered and paid for my matched JD receiver set today. They are shipping it out to my FFL in the morning. My update pics won't be as fancy as the last build, but I'll do my best to keep you all in the loop of my progress. I want to give an extra special thanks to Mlaines for getting the group-buy started and keeping in touch with JD throughout the transaction.

I think I'm sold on that LMOS. That Buffertech part looks promising, but still too new to judge. I'm also planning on running a standard gas block. I'm not planning on running a supressor (CA resident), so I won't need the JP adjustable block (despite how cool they are). mlaines, I'll pm you shortly.

As I said, this is a 'living' list. It grows, changes and evolves the longer I put off building. Looking back at my cost and weight issues, I think I have a new plan of attack. Instead of spending a LOT of money and adding unnecessary weight with the Buffertech AR-restor, I'm thinking of going back a little. For near the same price as a Fulton bolt assembly, I can install a JP LMOS. The LMOS cuts weight and gives me the similar performance that I was looking for in my previous set-up. I admit. I'm a little standoff-ish with the newer Buffertech product. The LMOS is a bit more established and is provided by a company with a long standing reputation for excellence.

I gotta get to the mag stand and pick up a copy of that magazine before it's gone. Someone should give Mike, at Advanced Barrel Systems, a heads up about this forum. He seems like a pretty stand-up guy who likes to educate about his product. He used to be VERY active on various forums, but I can only seem to find his entries in forum archives. I think he's a member on thehighroad.org and 24hourcampfire.com

I don't know if link posting is taboo here, so I won't be offended if my post gets erased. here is a review on Carbon Fiber Wrapped barrels

Ok guys. I'm a little shy to put this to print. This is in no way a "final draft", but I have been looking for a LONG time at the parts I want. I think this is the direction I want to go. I was planning on going the DPMS/KAC route. I honestly think their design is the future, and the AR-10 is going the path of the Dodo bird. My plan here was to cut weight as much as possible, and there is no cheap way to do that AND keep quality... You can have it low-cost, light-weight or high-quality.... choose two! <dontknow> * JD Machine Tech 308 upper/lower matched reciever set * Superior Weapons System E1-15 Rail (or the rifle length) * McCormick Drop in single stage 3.5lbs trigger * Fulton chrome bolt assembly * VLTOR charging handle * Rock Creek 18" barrel, 1:11 twist * ABS Carbon fiber barrel wrap * Rifle length gas tube * JD Raised (single) Rail gas block (unless I get the 15" rail, then I'll get a YHM or Noveske low profile) * Magpul PRS stock (although I might go to an Ace SOCOM stock to cut weight) * DPMS full length buffer tube * Buffertech AR-Restor buffer * Magpul MIAD grip * Magpul MIAD spacer Am I missing anything, besides the screws and pins? I have a local shop that I can run to for the small parts. I'm thinking of just sticking to open sights (MBUIS) on this, but who knows where time will take me. I may scope it... or even throw an EOTech and fts x3 magnifier???

I'm looking to start a new build and I'm super interested in building from a JD base. I was planning on buying from HERE for my receiver set since this a is a local dealer. I have a full outline of all the parts I want to use already written out. My question is how "plug and play" is the JD receiver? I am pretty savvy with my Colt AR15, but I didn't have to build it from scratch. This is going to be a very expensive learning experience for me, so I'm hoping to make as few mistakes as possible.
