I've emailed Bettin Custom, Mike Rock and Christensen Arms so far this weekend. I'm sure I'll have to wait through this holiday weekend to get a response.

Jgun, you are a man worth his weight in gold! Thanks for looking out! I hate myself for stalling this long on getting a barrel. If my plans for a carbon barrel are gone, I see a 16" Fulton barrel in my future.

Anyone hear anything about ABS closing shop? Their website followed the way of the Dodo bird. Just wondering if I'm going to have to find another carbon barrel maker, like Christensen?

Brownells has the 308 JP Low Mass BCG IN STOCK
Robocop1051 replied to imschur's topic in Brownells Coupons, Deals and Codes
I have the SI Fail Zero BCG on order, if it's too heavy for the 16" I plan on going to the LMOS. I just don't want to swap out my enidine buffer and CS spring. -
I just got my confirmation that my SI upper/lower are expected to arrive on the 27th!! The BCG is still extended for an unknown length of time.

I have the Ace ARFX. I had it installed on my JD 308 (DPMS compatible) for a while I took it off before I sold the receiver set. I plan on putting it on my new SI build. Just install with a standard A2 buffer tube like you do for an AR15. The ARFX is the exact same installation on the 308 models. Obviously you'll need the longer buffer and buffer spring. Since you're making the change I suggest the Tubb CS flat spring. It is a cheap and simple upgrade that will make a noticeable difference for you. Hope that helps

I went with a Tubb flat spring and .308 rifle length Enidine "AR-Restor" hydraulic buffer. When my SI-Defense order finally comes in, I'll tell you guys how it is all working out.

Brownells is always at least a 2 hour venture for me, and averages about $100 per visit... Kinda like Home Depot!

Can you attach a pic so we can fully understand what's going on?

.308 AR Bolt Carriers and Bolt Carrier Groups
Robocop1051 replied to imschur's topic in .308AR Parts
I already pre-ordered the Fail Zero BCG with a stainless carrier... Don't know why I needed the stainless, but one of us was going to have to pull the trigger to see how it worked <thumbsup>. I also ordered all their additional s/s parts (bbl extenstion and bolt catch) to keep the theme going. -
.308 AR Free Float Tubes, Hand Guards, Quadrails
Robocop1051 replied to imschur's topic in .308AR Parts
I eventually installed my Apex HG. Don't let my old post scare you off. Remove the delta ring from the barrel nut and install the special attachement that comes with the Apex HG. Viola, you're done. The two piece HG attachment clamps around the barrel nut and hold in place. The HG then slides over the attachment piece. I built mine from scratch, so I didn't have the standard barrel nut when I ordered the handguard. I love my Apex. I plan on buying another one for my AR15. -
Christensen Arms - Should be added to 308 Brands
Robocop1051 replied to sellmarkguy's topic in Christensen Arms
I have to admit it is very sexy, but with a $400+ price tag YIKES! It's like finding out a super model chews tobacco. CA claims it is primarily carbon fiber. I would LOVE to see one first hand. If I didn't already buy my Apex, I'd be hard pressed not to persue one. I have to add that the overall price of their completed rifle is reasonable, especially against other high end builders like JP or GAP. -
I pretty sure Armalite makes theirs a tid bit longer, and DPMS is standard. I had an AR15 (I think from a Colt) bolt catch on my JD. I think we're all looking at some trial-n-error between all the different makers.

I have the 90 degree BADASS for my 308... Is the 45 that much harder to install? I read somewhere that a little bit of smith work was required, like what though?

Baz Bros. work very closely with Ron Williams. He is most active on AR15.com (Sorry Drew :-[ ) Ron is the self proclaimed originator of the DI 45ACP. Whether or not there is any accuracy to that claim... His work is legit and his backing is solid! He will actually make you a DI upper in almost any pistol caliber you want. He and I have been in contact recently because I have a 10mm plan in the works. I have also heard that he will sell you just the parts you need to build your own (Bolt, Barrel, gas tube, gas block, and magwell block) if you were so inclined. Ron is also looking for someone to start manufacturing a magazine he has designed that will work in the AR15 lowers without a magwell block. Once that magazine is mass produced, his rifles will be everywhere. Ron recently (as in within the last few weeks) started his very own and very first website at www.RMWxtreme.com The site is mainly to get his email address out there. There's not much else there.

Damn it Drew, I try not to look at Brownell's because I get stuck on that site for hours. Only problem is that you link to them with all your examples!! Anyone else see these new barrel from Fulton? http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=42629/avs%7CMake_3=AR-15zz1zzM4/Product/_308_AR_BARRELS 16" med-contour barrel with a rifle length gas system. For less than $300!

Sleep a little bit safer tonight America. Just a few weeks from finishing my rifle, and JSOC took out the one target I was looking forward to the most!

The MA-ten can accept DPMS and AR10 parts. Once you decide which direction you want to go, you have to stick with that. No mixing parts. If you get a DPMS compatible barrel, you need a DPMS compatible extention and bolt carrier group. The greatest trick Colt ever pulled, was convincing the world the M4 feed ramps were a needed modification. Luckily they came into the 308 trade too late in the game to spread this myth. (My personal opinion) As for HG's. I think Mega uses DPMS threads. Probably 99% of the DPMS compatible HG's will work. The weird ones will say in their description something like "for the post 2009 DPMS receiver height".

Sounds like Les Baer 308's are just like their 1911's. No one is quite sure what makes them better, <dontknow> but damn are they expensive! :o

A semi good example here. Ever see a slow motion video a a bullet leaving th barrel. Notice how as soon as the bullet leaves the barrel, fire and gas expand passed the bullet. Eventually the gasses slow down and the bullet escapes the cloud of smoke. There is so much gas in a .308/7.62, and it travels so fast, that the 2" of barrel after the gas block is just enough to cycle. The .223/5.56 doesn't produce the same burn/gas. I'm guessing that length of burn has some influence as well. A 223/556 does a complete burn before it reaches the rifle length gas block. That means that while the gas is still expanding, no additional gas is being produced after a certain point. A 308/762 finishes it's burn beyond a rifle length gas block, up to 15.5". That still puts burning fuel in the gas block as the bullet passes. This is also why the 14.5" 223/556 barrel with a mid length gas system is so popular right now. Did any of this make sense? I work graveshift, and I just woke up. I'm sure there are guys smarter than me here, and they can explain it better.
-
Is this an RRA issue? Maybe I'm reading the OP wrong. I'm pretty sure survivalshop and Jgun are running their rifles without any function issues. There is sooo much gas in a 7.62, and not a lot of pressure is needed to function the action. If a 16" barrel with a rifle length gas block is your fancy, I encourage you to pursue that. It may not be a factory option, but a custom barrel is only $300 out of reach! I'm ordering an ABS/Rock carbon barrel with the same dimensions. I wouldn't be wasting $1k on a barrel if I didn't think it would function.

I think survivalshop and Jgun both built 16" barrels with rifle length gas block. They look SEXY.
