a 150 grain will be a bit faster than the 168. What twist is your barrel?

Actually, California is responsible for a majority of the rice eaten in the world. If anything, there will now be a surplus of rice, thus causing the price to drop. The US has become quite independent from Japan over the years... Only to replace that dependency on China. A few less imported Hondas and Toyotas, won't affect the market. The nice thing is Japan has been a neutral/friendly country to most of the world for the last 50 years. I'll bet they are rebuilt in a year. When I was there last, they said their building constraints were primarily from lack of space. Nothing like a little natural disaster to open up some clean real estate for building. Don't be surprised if we see an all new Japan in the next few years.

I was a CB fan for a while... Then I went back to a dark OD. Now I'm trying to talk myself out of doing that water transfer camo. I'm a gimmick geek, so of course I'm a fan of the new A-TACS print. Although I wasn't a big fan of the digi or multicam stuff. Black rifles are so Y2k. 8)

I made my choice. I have been writing emails back and forth with Josh Sonju about a custom build. He actually talked me into a Gen III with the FA. He explained it was 20% lighter than the other receivers. That sold me. I'm supposed to ge an invoice in my inbox shortly. They are installing some parts for me (s/s bolt catch, pivot/takedown pins) and making a custom color scheme (Fail-Zero over OD green). I'm also pre-ordering a SS/Fail-Zero BCG. I still really like the MA-TEN, but the Armalite style receiver was a turn off for me. Maybe after this build and my 10mm build, I'll start a mega build too.

We should encourage people to recognize March 8th as a day to observe the Winchester .308 round and all the glory of the AR/SR rifles chambered in said caliber. Armalite did a grand thing today and put up a sale for their rifle receivers, but one company isn't enough. What if we could get this to be an industry-wide recognized event? Such as a holiday just for us shooters. Let those "other guys" worry about making a February 23rd.... We have March 8th! I say join Armalite's lead and teach others about 3/08. If we get a running start at this, we might all be poor men on March 9th next year!

How much begging would I have to do to see a picture of that Gen II upper without the side rail installed? I assume that the three screws on the side are so that is an optional feature... Have you found a purpose for the side rail yet?

My new love interest... an AR-10mm?
Robocop1051 replied to Robocop1051's topic in General Discussion
So gun show 1 of 2 came and went this afternoon. California is becoming quite depressing with every passing day. Despite the unimpressive turnout, there was I walked the entire show, which wasn't very much. I found nothing better quality than a Spike/DelTon/Stag lower receiver. I asked everyone about the Olympic 10mm upper and had negative results... One guy even tried to tell me "No one makes a 10mm." <dontknow> Who does he think I am? Now I think he's an idiot, and I don't do business with idiots. I can only hope Nevada will produce better results next weekend. Despite all, as God is my witness, I will build a 10mm rifle on an AR!!! -
I just bought five mags here for $18 a piece. I don't know if they ship, or if they were having a sale... I do know that the Sacramento Gun Show (Cal Expo) was selling them this afternoon for $28. Who are they kidding?

Forword assist or no forward assist
Robocop1051 replied to Robocop1051's topic in General Discussion
+1 to everything Cabinetman wrote. I took this topic home with me, to discuss with the "Old Man". My father and I are both LE, with extensive backgrounds using AR15's and M16's. At the beginning of the conversation he insisted that a FA was important. Then as he thought about it more, he hadn't used the FA in over 20 years. Even then, that was after hundreds of rounds of ammo shot in semi and full auto. By the end of the conversation, not only did he agree with me, but he wants a new upper for his personal AR15 without a FA. If the "Old Man" agrees with the logic. Then there mut be something to it. -
Did you really just do that to me? I was damn near 100% set in my decision and then you post that! I hate you right now...

Going from a FAL addiction to an AR... That's like going from nicotine to pure Colombian. Welcome to a real addiction. Not only will you be provided with the info to feed your fix, but you're surrounded by a bunch of enablers who urge you to keep building. We don't just build rifles. We help eachother find justification to build a rifle from a pack of roll pins you have laying around, and we share the secrets to hiding new builds from our wives. Welcome

I'm torn here. I really, really like the MA-TEN. On the other hand I also like the SI, and they make a traditional DPMS style lower. I fully intend to get a Fidelis AR-12g when they come out. From the looks of it I might need to go with the SI, just to fit the Fidelis upper. I just wish Sonju would return my email. I asked if i could order the Gen II set in a two tone (fail-zero upper and OD lower) with the takedown/pivot pins and stainless bolt catch installed. I also want the fail zero/stainless BCG and stainless barrel extension. Maybe I'll save my Mega purchase for my AR-10mm build?

Forword assist or no forward assist
Robocop1051 replied to Robocop1051's topic in General Discussion
See, that's the stuff you forget about. I store all my bolt guns with bolt out or open for the same reason. -
So as I begin making plans to start my new build (my JD set sold fast), I am torn on whether or not to get my next receiver set with a forward assist. Does anyone see a need for these any more? I rarely ever shoot NATO or other surplus ammo. One of the benefits of being raised in a LE family, and then becoming LE myself, is the near limitless supply of decent ammo. To the best of my recollection, I don't think I've used a FA (AR15) in over 20 years. I remember as a teen I was blowing through bandoliers of some dirty old mil stuff, and I think maybe I used it then. With the advancements in the 308 world, I'm seeing less and less FA's on new rifle builds. I'm wondering what you guys think about the "need" for a FA on a modern rifle. I understand their use and function, but I don't forsee fighting for my life in the jungles of a third world country anytime in the near future.

Samson Manufacturing’s DPMS barrel nut replaces the stock DPMS Barrel nut so you can attach our AR-10 hand guards to a DPMS riffle. The DPMS Barrel nut is also a different thread than a stock AR-10 barrel nut. http://jsgunparts.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=9_11_80&products_id=1147

MIAD GRIP FIT.
Robocop1051 replied to awesymoto's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
I hate to admit this... but I'm the last person to ask. You know all those stories about people learn from trial and ERROR. Yeah, that's me. First I snapped my tap off inside the receiver while threading. After I bought a tap extraction tool and removed the broken bit, I bought a new tap and finished the threads. Next I tried putting the set screw in, only to find out that my set screw was the wrong size (really hard to tell when you are dealing with such small parts). I don't know if I was mixing SAE with metric or if the screw was too big... I'll never find out becuase the allen set screw stripped. When I tried to use pliers to unscrew it the set screw crushed and broke off. Since the detent and spring were already installed behind the siezed up screw, I just dremmeled off the excess and left it alone. A small dot of Aluma-Black hides the truth. As for cutting the spring. I just measured the spring against the length of the set screw, and cut off an equal amount. It's not an exact math, but it all works. While the whole process sounds sloppy, it actually turned out pretty clean in the end. -
MIAD GRIP FIT.
Robocop1051 replied to awesymoto's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
The grip wedge is only needed if you use the large or medium back strap. The thin back strap fits fine. As for the take down pin detent spring, that is a common issue almost all builders have run into. Many of us have resorted to threading the small hole, cutting the spring, and installing a set screw to hold the spring in place. Mega Arms does this in their MA-TEN. I did it to a JD Machine 308. If you use the larger backstraps from the MIAD grip, and it fits without the wedge, some light sanding/filing might be needed to sit the grip against the receiver better. The slightly wider curve of my 308 needed a bigger seat inside the backstrap before it sat perfectly. -
http://www.knsprecisioninc.com/c/PivotTDPins.html Who's used them? Who knows about them? I'm leaning towards these for my build AR-10mm build... Assuming they are good <dontknow>

I'm in the middle of writing an email to SI-Defense right now. I'm hoping to recover lost time/$$ from my previous build by going through them for my revised build. I fully plan on using their Fail-Zero/stainless steel BCG. I am also going to see if I can get their Gen II receiver set in two-tone (Fail-Zero over OD Green). There's really no reason I can see to have a Fail-Zero lower??? <dontknow> Has anyone noticed that SI-Defense offer's their receiver sets in titanium? All for the measily cost of $7,000! :o

My new love interest... an AR-10mm?
Robocop1051 replied to Robocop1051's topic in General Discussion
I have two back to back gun shows coming up. I'm thinking of building an N4 lower to pair with the Olympic Arms upper. We'll see how it all turns out. -
Don't get me wrong. The quality of the JD Machine 308 is superb. It's light weight and very sleek. I just wish the information about the magazine was disclosed before I bought. If I was building strictly a bench gun, this would've been a perfect set.

you're absolutely correct. I messed up in my original post, and failed to get the appropriate message across. I am in no way upset with the PMAG... On the other hand, I am ready to melt my JD 308 down into paper clips.
