What do you have on order or in the mail? Part 2
98Z5V replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
Damnit. I knew I should have saved those damn things. -
I did forget that... But, I recall now! Two schools for me at Devens, one was a "tactical training course" for assignments to field units, as an intel dude. Radios, generators, tents, 292 antennas - that stuff. Next time there was not long before they shut it down, BNCOC in '91.
-
Indeed, you can. That's a viable solution, too.
-
You're really gonna do that to us? Are you serious?!!? Not even a picture here to go with this awesome story?! I'm recommending you for remedial training, starting a 0600 tomorrow morning...

Damn. You guys are both MI. I knew right away on Nam62, when he posted that patch. Rex, that shocked my, 05D, huh? Pretty damn cool, guys. I signed up as a 98C, SIGINT Analyst, and realized real quick that I hated Intel Geeks. I gravitated my way towards Infantry and SF units, and stayed my happy ass in those as much as I could. One tour I couldn't avoid was "another trip back to Korea" and I ended up in 3rd MI BN (AE). These days its a Beechcraft RC-12, that looks like a flying porcupine, and the DeHaviland Dash 7. All told, between 4 tours and 10 TDYs in Korea, it's eaten up 6 solid years of my life. 73 months, to be exact. When we first got the Dash 7s, they were painted exactly like this... These days, I've heard that they paint them different.

@Bear,I have a feeling you're gonna fit in just fine around here...

What is your shooting goal, here? 1000 yards is your starting point? Or is it Home Defense? Maybe you're hunting deer, and the longest shot you'll ever take will be 185 yards? What's your goal for this gun? That's the most important question that needs to be answered. Can't offer you ANY valid advice without your input on that part of the equation. By the way - a 10lb .308AR is pretty fucking light. A loaded 20-rd mag weighs 2lbs, just on it's own. Magnified optics in a decent mount is another 2lbs. My experience.

That's a whole bunch of fucked up words that you combined into things that don't exist. What country do you live in? ESL, by chance? (English as a Second Language)... PLEASE start your own topic about what you're trying to do here. The thread you jumped into was already 4 years-ish old. I look forward to your new topic. I hope you're not a troll, or a fake-bot, working your way in here. We'll find out shortly. I'm going out on a limb here, and predicting...

I use Vet Wrap to hold that poop down - and I do it, too. It comes in colors, including Woodland Camo. That's my cheekrest on my .300 Win Mag, right like that. In the old Army days, you cut a chunk off your Sleep Mat off, and used 100mph tape to fix it to your buttstock. Vet Wrap is alot easier.

Brother, you jsut turned a lesson into a Mantra. 1.5 guns should REALLY be 2.0 guns. I think you just made 1.5 guns into 3.0 guns, if I read your post right...

Oh, Damn... You're gonna be FUN around here!...

I was a Varget-only guy before 2012. Once Sandy Hook happened - I kid you not - Varget disappeared, and I had to find a suitable replacement. I found RL-15. I've never turned back. It was my .308 Heavy-load powder, until recently. It's still my 5.56 Heavy-load powder, and that won't change. My 5.56 loads are dialed for my 18" guns, and they're badass. I recently switched up my .308 Heavy-load powder at the same time I switched projectiles. Before, I was only loading the Hornady 178gr HPBT Match projectile. I've switched over to the Hornady 178 ELD-X for all my precision .308 Win loads now, and forever. It's a far superior projectile. With that, my powder changed to Accurate 2495. I couldn't be happier.
-
I had that feeling when the first one hit - that was a commercial airliner inside a recently-declared No Fly Zone. It wasn't supposed to be there in the first place. I knew then that it was no "accident." When the second plane hit the other tower, I knew I was right.

Your wife is yelling THIS right now...

I'm running RL-22 for my .260 Rem, and it LOVES that powder. Grab a pound of that and play around. From a 20" barrel, I'm getting 2650fps with Hornady 147 ELD-M projos. 43.0 grains was my most accurate charge, before I started seeing pressure signs, before the next accuracy node that I would have hit. I know for positive that they switched over to RL-15 for the Mk 262 loaded ammo. That was the Mk 262 Mod 1 change. I think I remember hearing about that for the M118LR revisions, too, after they discovered it on the 5.56 heavies. I'll go back through the power point slides from Doc Roberts, about that.

Building .308 Lower Better Than Hawaii?
98Z5V replied to Sir John of Dough's topic in Building a .308AR
You may not realize it, but you actually subsidize what it takes to keep me on payroll. I actually get paid nothing - but it takes alot to keep me here when I go off on a dumbass - and that's where the "value" comes in... I've launched some pretty legendary ass-reamings here, which further caused Drew to directly shiit a Rabid Monkey straight out of his ass... It's everything the other guys here can do, just to keep me around... and NOT be Banned... -
6Willbird, new wildcat large frame AR project ctg
98Z5V replied to willbird's topic in Member Builds
Yep, they're calling 1:8" twist these days, for the heavies. 103gr ELD-X (.512 G1), 105gr HPBT (.530 G1), and 108gr ELD-M (.536 G1) from Hornady are pretty badass. My 6 ARC is a 1:7" twist, so I'm gonna shoot the heaviest thing that I can find for that bastard. Right now it's the 108 ELD-Ms. 200 factory loaded rounds already waiting, and another 300 to load and "determine my handload..." After that, I'm switching to the 110gr A-Tips. They're rollin' a .604 G1, which is just crazy. The .243 Win bolt gun I have is a 26" heavy barrel, but it's a 1:9 1/8" twist. I think I'll stick to the 95gr stuff for that, which are still good. I'll try some heavies in it, and see what it likes. If it doesn't like any 103, 105, or 108gr stuff - I'll just load that up and shoot it through the 6 ARC. -
New 6.5G BCG arrives tomorrow. I'll build this thing this weekend. Well, I'll rip down and rebuild the Valk, into a 6 ARC. For the upper, it's just a barrel replacement, so it's nothing to do. Replace a different BCG, load a different mag... Done. Shoot groups, or re-zero a scope to shoot real groups. That's minor. If I can get my hands on a MagnetoSpeed V3 before this weekend, I'll shoot the initial shot strings this weekend. Yeah, when it's 116* here. FML.

I'll find out, brother. You know for a fact that I'm gonna get to the bottom of this. 1.5 mils of difference at 850 yards is HUGE! 50* to 105* is huge, too. And it's in the Relative Pressure... "Station Pressure" in my Kestrel... Sam at Panhandle Precision explains this much better than I can... Kudos to Sam. GunWerks blows this out, too, in a written article - but he breaks it down to Density Altitude. DA is a combination of pressure, temp, and humidity, into one number - and it's an important number: https://www.gunwerks.com/blog/long-range-pursuit-2/post/shooting-under-pressure-22
-
Has to be powder specific, but that's suppoed to be a temp-stable powder, too. Which makes me wonder... That's just one wild temp range extreme to deal with, and the biggest change is the Relative Pressure - not directly the Barometric Pressure, but the Relative Pressure, from the temperature change. After seeing that - and I couldn't get the 18 Grendel on the 850 target at 105*... and that's Accurate 2520 powder... I stopped on the Grendel, but I stayed after it on the Mk11 gun. I'll get a powder that's supposed to be completely temp stable - even if I don't have one sitting here, and I'll specifically test this. It's gonna take me 6 months to do it, completely, but I'll get my hot-weather data before August is over, while it's still hot-as-fuk here. I'll shoot that same load again on an early January morning, 2021...

Time to update this thread with new info, just so it stays pertinent. I picked up 1100 primed once-fired Lake City .308 cases from @dpete, and formulated a brand new load for a brand new 18.5" Mk11 gun. I made the decision to jump to the Hornady .308 178gr ELD-X projectile, just because it's so much better than the Hornady 178gr HPBT that I was using before. The bonus in all this is, it's the ELD-X, and works great for hunting, and slays dragons target-shooting. It WORKS. Running Accurate 2495 powder at 40.6 grains with a CCI 200 primer gets me 2530fps in 50* weather. It gets me 2630fps in 105* weather. There are no brass issues, either at 50* or 105* - just takes two different dope charts for those extremes. 8.5 mils at 850 yards for one, 7.0 mils at 850 yards when it's superhot out...

Pretty cool. Good to see the Grendel Forum behind the 6 ARC.

Building .308 Lower Better Than Hawaii?
98Z5V replied to Sir John of Dough's topic in Building a .308AR
If it was only up to Drew @imschur, I think that's the way it could be - I think he has a Man-Crush on me. A Bro-Mance. @Robocop1051, @edgecrusher, and @Matt.Cross got tired of my free ride, and made me start producing, or get out... They're Hell to work for... -
It's like a boat, man. Do you have a boat? A boat is just a hole in the water that you keep pushing money into. "BOAT" just means "Break Out Another Thousand..."... Same way with these things. Money-pit - just like a boat... But these thing don't lose their value, over time. And don't need much maintenance, from keeping them to turning into a complete piece of shiit - like a neglected boat would... You're not in bad hands here, relaaaaaxxxxx... We're looking OUT for you right now. Might seem strange, I get it. Over time, here, you'll realize that we weren't just fuckin' with you... we have your best interests at heart here. ***Whether YOU know your best interests, right now, is not our concern - we already know what those best interests are... once you showed up here...***

Man! I'm SWEATIN' after that!.... You're gonna be FUN here!... I don't mean that as a slam, by no means - from your history, you just don't fuk around... Now based on that, you need to WATCH OUT for several people on this board - I'll point them out as they post up... You need to WATCH those fuckers - they're only out for your money... Some of these guys are Shady As Fuk. I'm just sayin'...
