newbie 308 AR question interchange parts w/ ar15
98Z5V replied to alwaysstuck's topic in General Discussion
For that Aero, the trigger and hammer pins will work, safety will work, buffer retainer will work, mag catch will work, detents and springs will work, forward assist will work. -
Comes in handy with the Hookers and Blow!...

I had this thing done when he was going nuts about his, and arguing parts all over the place. After seeing his pics, it wasn't even impressive. He was telling me that mine wasn't even light, but I built it to beat the schit out of someone with, as a design goal. You could probably break his by hitting a Girl Scout with it...
-
Here's the detailed pics of the thing. Nothing special but parts selection, with lots of standard parts. Only things I relaly payed attention to were the barrel, rail, and buttstock. Everything else it pretty normal. One day, I'll get into really cutting it down, without sacrificing strength - I want to keep it tough enough to beat on.

Yes, finished out at 5.39lbs total. Now, I told you that was a temporary buttstock system, in that pic, just so I could shoot it. The 5.2lbs was before adding the PRI Combat Latch and BAD-ASS ambi safety. After re-weighing, it's at 5.39lbs right now... Complete parts list: Upper: XProducts forged upper receiver Lower: Aero Precision forged lower receiver BAD-ASS ambi safety, long fat and short fat levers. DSG Arms enhanced magazine catch. ALG ACT trigger Battle Arms Development Sabertube / BAD-LBS buttstock system MagPul MOE K grip and poly trigger guard Standard charging handle with PRI Combat Latch Ares Armor Reduced Friction BCG complete ALG EMR-V1 10" rail with it's own barrel nut Faxon 16" pencil barrel with Faxon lightweight gasblock. Spike's Shorty DynaComp Fortis T1 mount Primary Arms mini red dot Standard parts: regular carbine buffer, buffer spring, magazine release pivot and takedown pins, ejection port door, midlength gastube and forward assist. Armalite springs throughout the lower. Don't think I forgot anything... THIS is what weighs 5.39lbs, total:
-
That part is backwards...
-
This is the basis for the upper - standard forged upper receiver (with a regular forward assist and regular ejection port door), Faxon 16" midlength pencil barrel, Faxon lightweight gasblock, standard midlength gas tube, and the guts (barrelnut) of the ALG Defense (Geissele) EMR V1 M-LOK 10" rail. That complete 10" rail system weighs 6.19oz, including hardware and barrelnut. Spike's Shorty DynaComp on the end...

Here it is with a temporary buttstock system, whilst I was waiting on the Battle Arms light(est) weight buttstock setup. I couldn't wait, and tossed this backend on just to go blast the thing. Detailed current pics of it will be in here tomorrow, with a full parts list.

Tons of discussion here about it, and I think several pinned topics.

Yep, lots of V7 parts on there. Here, for you - 3.8 pounds. OIP. You can read up on it here: https://www.battlearmsdevelopment.com/oip-rifle http://www.sadefensejournal.com/wp/?p=2930

Get to paintin' already, brother!
-
Did you chamber that gauge like you'd chamber a live round? Bolt locked back, insert gauge (either into the chamber or via magazine feed), then release the bolt catch?...
-
In that case, if there's room (enough diameter) for flutes, then the barrel profile could have been a smaller diameter. Thus, one with flutes for "lightening" could have been even lighter by making that profile diameter smaller. Make sense? Don't waste the money on a "pencil barrel" that has flutes. Get a lighter, true pencil barrel...
-
If you get a true pencil barrel, with all the excess weight already taken out of it by the nature of the profile - then there's really nothing left to put flutes in... I'm just sayin'...
-
Don't let the "5.56 NATO vs. .223 Rem" chamber stuff get to you. In that chamber, shoot whatever you can buy the easiest. That chamber won't care, nor will either ammo be "unsafe." Shoot it all.
-
This looks pretty close to M-LOK slots, right here. Maybe call the tube manufacturer...
-
If it's M-LOK compatible, just get the one from MagPul. It's aluminum, stout, and works great. https://www.magpul.com/products/firearms-accessories/rails-and-accessories/m-lok-bipod-mount

You guys remember Roger, from BAD, I'm sure. He has his own company now - Forward Controls Design. Hit him up when you need things like this - always check him first, because he's making some awesome stuff. http://forwardcontrolsdesign.com/

Schit, I forgot about that one - I used that upper to build a pinned 14.5" M4 clone for my kid. What a great shooting rifle. I can say this - my Faxon 16" pencil heat UP when you get on it. It gets hot. But it cools fast. That BCM pencil has been used many, many times on an Appleseed qualification, and it heats up, but doesn't lose it's accuracy. That's a pretty good, realistic pace of fire, too. It's not stupid-in-the-sandpit mag dumps, just realistic firing pace at multiple targets. The lightweight hasn't been used in an Appleseed yet, but it will go through a few. OP, you wanna build a light rifle. That's what I'm taking from this thread. You will only make a heavy (or, heavier) rifle if you use a fluted barrel.
-
Faxon Firearms pencil barrel for you, then. 16", midlength gas, 1:8" twist. That twist will run the ammo you describe very well. This one right here: http://faxonfirearms.com/16-pencil-5-56-nato-mid-length-4150-qpq/ No matter what you go with, if you plan on a 16" barrel, make sure it's midlength gas.

Let's camo that little bastard - Tactical Rascal!
-
If you want to get into lightweight trinkets, check out VSeven Weapon Systems - overall, you can take a chunk of weight out by using that stuff. Eventually, I'll start adding their stuff, but for right now, it's all just standard parts. http://www.vsevenweaponsystems.com/

My 5.2lb version uses standard, forged receivers and a standard BCG. Wanted to see how far I could get one down with regular, real, tough parts Forgot this part - runs Spike's Shorty Dynacomp on the end of the barrel, that is included in the weight number.
-
I built one that tips the scales at 5.2lbs total, with a mini red dot on it - on it. No back up sights. 16" pencil barrel by Faxon Firearms, and that's a damn great barrel. Geissele rail. Battle Arms Sabertube and BAD-LBS stock combination. I'll get pics in here by Sunday...
