pokey
Time for another silly question. What,s life expectancy for barrels in rounds, (with all things equal) ,of a cmv 4140, verses stainless, verses cmv 4150 chrome lined. I was told that a cmv barrel would out last a stainless, and that stainless barrels are not as tolerant of rapid firing. The question mainly applies to .223 and .308 rifles. Also, if the stainless barrel is more accurate, ( as I've heard ) just how much more accurate. Thank you. Pokey
planeflyer21
The variables are far and wide concerning barrel longevity. Myths and reputations from early stainless are still mumbled about like facts. A quality stainless barrel will outlast an improperly treated and chrome lined barrel. For AR type rifles, a better indicator seems to be length of the gas system, all other factors being equal. Any quality barrel has potential to be more mechanically accurate than the person shooting rounds through it.
Dane Armory
Unless you are planning to shoot more than 5,000 rounds thur you barrel it is a mute question. CM steel is durable , Stainless is stronger. Nickel content determines strength. An example would be 18/8 chromeium/nickel steel is a standard. Carbon content effects temp resistance, the quence process effects hardness and durablity. Its all a conpromise. Just get a barrel that you like and is pleasing to your eyes. Rifle gas systems will give your barrel more life than carbine gas systems.
BLKSHEEP
The variables are far and wide concerning barrel longevity "NiCorr™ surface conversion has proved more lubricious, harder wearing, more heat and corrosion resistant than the hard chrome normally used in the bore. Our barrels can handle 20,000 rounds before replacement, as compared to 6,000-10,000 rounds on a standard M4."
survivalshop
I have a Olympic Arms ,24 ",S/S, 5.56 Match HB on my pre ban Olympic Arms build & its been on there since 1980 & still shoots very well & I never kept a round count , but I will bet its more than 5000 RD's . How well you take care of it , will help its serviceability length.

BLKSHEEP
I prefer stainless , the way I see it is if you can afford to shoot enough rounds to wear out your barrel you can afford to buy a new barrel :yup:

98Z5V
The AR rifles I've built for accuracy have stainless barrels. 18.5" .308 AR with FA Criterion barrel. 5.56 Woody NM rifle, with Wilson Arms 20" 1:8 .223 Wylde chamber, 5.56 16" precision gun with Wilson Arms 16" 1:8 .223 Wylde chamber, 5.56 Mk12 Mod 0 with Wilson Arms 18" 1:8 .223 Wylde chamber. ^^^ You should see a pattern there... Those 5.56 rifles are ridiculous-accurate with anything from 69gr to 77gr ammo. The 18" Mk12 does amazing things with my Varget-55gr loads, too. The Fulton barrel on the .308 is just straight badass. Doesn't matter what it's shooting. "Stainless Steel Barrel Day At The Range" with me is a fucking hoot, man. <thumbsup>
