McCannicalBob
This is the wrap up of the gun I built and chronicled in the Rocky Start threads. This last week I finally got my UBR stock mounted and my Bushnell Elite Tactical 3-12 x 44 scope. I've been having some break-in issues, specifically not locking back after the last round in the magazine, though today it wasn't a problem on the last three magazines I fired. Total invested was about $2100 (not including scope and mount), and looking back I could have done better. For example, I bought a LPK, then also bought a Geissle trigger. I bought a buffer/tube/spring kit, then bought the UBR that comes with the tube. I bought the BCG, then bought a barrel that comes with a bolt. I bought the adjustable gas block, and now it looks like it is borderline undergassed so I run the block wide open and could have gone with a standard gas block. Regardless, this one shoots on par with a friend's Larue, and cost a lot less, and I didn't wait a year to get it. Target shown is 5 shots at 100 yards from bipod rest on a bench, with factory ammo. I think it turned out pretty good. Looks good, soft shooting, not scary-loud, and accurate. I really love it.

D.R.D.
What barrel did you go with and which handguard is that?
McCannicalBob
Barrel is Lothar Walther Vartac 18" rifle gas, and handguard is 14" SLR Rifleworks Solo.
D.R.D.
Very nice. I'm looking at a LW barrel for one of my builds. They have a 16" midlength .308 1:10 that I'm considering. What does the "Vartac" mean? Do you kno the specs of that barrel? I'm curious since i'm also building the "Budget OBR" and know that LaRue used to run LW barrels before they made their own. When I spoke with LW, they weren't willing to discuss the exact specs and contour they used with LaRue, but offered the one I mentioned as an option. Is the vartac what LaRue used? If not, any idea on the OBR barrel specs? Cheers, DRD
edgecrusher
LaRue used LW 50 barrels from them
D.R.D.
Edge, Do you happen to know what type of contour they used on those barrels? DRD
McCannicalBob
Vartac was originally their varmint/tactical hybrid 5.56 barrel and they later applied that concept to a line of .308 barrels. Fairly heavy contour but with a .750 gas block journal. Mine is 18", rifle length gas, 1:10 twist, 410 stainless, which I don't believe is the same as LW50 stainless. If you have questions about dealing with LW, pm me.
98Z5V
I believe we've had a problem with LW here before - delivery of paid-for product. If I'm wrong, I'll modify/delete this. EDIT - I thought my memory served me correctly - ^^^ Based on that situation, and shitty customer service, they'll never get a recommendation from me, and never see a penny of my money. Wouldn't matter if they shoot 0.001" groups at a million yards. I'm glad yours worked out - hell, I'll glad you even got a barrel. Not happening in this house, though. Your rifle is damn nice, though - very well done. <thumbsup> Edited February 3, 2015 by 98Z5V
McCannicalBob
98Z5V, I don't know if I'd do it again myself. I ordered the barrel, THEN read all the bad stuff about the company (specifically, Woody), and worked myself up into a tizzy. If I would have just let it go, and had no conversations with him, everything would have been just fine. In reality I got the barrel in 2-1/2 weeks. While waiting, I had to verify a few things with him, like gas block size, etc. Every conversation left me feeling like my chain was getting jerked. It did end well for me though. I learned a lot. 98Z5V
Bob, you're on the good end of that deal, and that is awesome - the LW barrels really are great shooting barrels. I'd never try to take that away from them, or bad-talk the quality of their barrels, in any way. One deal like the lying that Matt got, and the bull$hit they tried to give him - the run-around - nope, not me. I can't believe how patient Matt was throught he whole ordeal. I would have blown an a$s-gasket much earlier than that, and been "that a$shole customer." I'm glad you got what you ordered, and the timeframe is awesome. You did well in that deal, and really, no kidding - enjoy that barrel. It will treat you well. <thumbsup>

Glad to hear it brother. Honestly, I've never taken issue with the quality of their product, everyone I know that has one says they are fantastic barrels and I don't doubt them for a minute. At this point, if they hadn't dealt with me in the manner that they did, I would buy blanks from them and simply complete my own barrels, but even that is out of the question. I honestly wouldn't piss on Woody if his guts were on fire.
