392heminut Posted February 17, 2015 Report Posted February 17, 2015 I have a DPMS Panther (factory gun) that I've had for years. I have no idea what the round count is on it but I'm going to say that it's definitely below the 10K mark. Back years ago the bolt broke in it and it was replaced with a milspec bolt straight out of Ft. Bliss (not gonna say how that happened). Took it out today to try out a 40 rnd Pmag and that bolt broke! I'm guessing the gun hasn't had more that 3K rounds fired on that bolt! Pic below of both bolts, DPMS on the top and the milspec on the bottom.
blue109 Posted February 18, 2015 Report Posted February 18, 2015 damn! impressive! don't recall ever even seeing a broken bolt first hand.
98Z5V Posted February 18, 2015 Report Posted February 18, 2015 Something going on with that cam pin in the bolt carrier itself - the actual carrier?
Robocop1051 Posted February 18, 2015 Report Posted February 18, 2015 I'm with 98. I think there's too much travel inside your carrier. The cam is literally ripping the bolts apart.
survivalshop Posted February 18, 2015 Report Posted February 18, 2015 (edited) Or the bolt is not unlocking . Worn Barrel extension ? Could be the Upper receivers cam channel is out of spec.. I would be reluctant to fire this rifle until you figure it out . Take measurements & compare them with a known working system or new components . - Cam pin dimensions & fitment in Carrier - Upper Receivers cam channel -I would remove the Barrel to get a better look at the Barrels Extension & check head space with the barrel & bolt only . Robocop1051 Posted February 18, 2015 Report Posted February 18, 2015 For the record, SurvivalShop is batting near 1000 on his online diagnosis'. Scrap what I said and check his idea first.
survivalshop Posted February 19, 2015 Report Posted February 19, 2015 Nope , check that also . Why mention it if someone already has . <dontknow> Its fill in the blanks <laughs>
98Z5V Posted February 19, 2015 Report Posted February 19, 2015 First thing needs to be the cam pin and the channel in the carrier. After that, move to the upper - provided you don't see a whole bunch of shiny aluminum in the upper when you strip it down... <lmao>
392heminut Posted February 19, 2015 Author Report Posted February 19, 2015 I haven't been able to mess with it at all, been way under the weather the last few days.
98Z5V Posted February 20, 2015 Report Posted February 20, 2015 Well, that's no excuse! That means you're at home, not doing much - plenty of time! <lmao>
392heminut Posted February 20, 2015 Author Report Posted February 20, 2015 I did something, I loaded 500 rnds of 300 BLK! <thumbsup>
