TomVMurphyTX
While I'm sure that the answer is range specific, I am wondering what do most ranges (especially those in NTX area) consider non-FMJ?Like A-Max, Soft Point Boat Tail, Hollow points etc.Brands? washguy
Hey Tom Yep no bi-metal,ball...milsurp stuff like that... and has to be non magnetic....yes they will check with a magnet at most places. So amax, softpoint. hollow point and open tip match...hunting rounds is gtg....getting to be a pain in the azz...and expensive too Wash
TomVMurphyTX
I wonder if the ranges purposely leave out the details so you'll buy their ammo. Or is there a super secret no -newbe rules that i ain't heard off?
washguy
Yep...seen it happen at ranges...you dont have the right stuff...oh look we have some.. at 20% higher pricing ...didnt used to be that way...but were you here bout two years ago when the range burned down because someone shot a tracer round in there? They had shredded tires for a backstop...ooops! that fire burned for a long while. So all my stash that ive been hoarding for decades is not welcome at most ranges Wash
mineralman55
One of my local ranges has that rule... no FMJ on the rifle range. They're afraid of ricochetse getting into the surrounding neighborhoods. (Nevermind the housing developments were put up there decades after the range was there. Reminds me of people complaining of airport noise after they moved next door to it.) HPBT, SBT, AMAX, plastic tipped all are GTG.

survivalshop
So, you can't take military ball to the range , even if its in an unopened marked box , that designates it as Ball ammo , not Tracer or Armor piercing ?

Club members were insistent that they needed to purchase property downrange. Wise board members said "Nobody will ever buy that land." Now there is a house peering down from about 650 yards out past the berm. Just a matter of time...
washguy
So, you can't take military ball to the range , even if its in an unopened marked box , that designates it as Ball ammo , not Tracer or Armor piercing ? Survival only one range I know of around here will let you shoot ball, and those owners are just plain rude that run the place. So no ball, fmj.or bi metals at the places I go to....and if the range officer see's a steel case hit the ground that automatically gives him the right to a cavity search Wash
jtallen83
I've been to numerous ranges at work locations that don't have any such rules, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Iowa....none of these had any range officers present though. My home range rule is no military surplus but the walmart ZQI seems to be fine....rules based on a lack of knowledge or just to make someone feel good, bunch of bull$hit.
