Great info fellows! Thanks! I'll hold off.

The Aero Precision m5 OEM (no furniture or rail) in 6.5 Creedmoor is only like $1000. PSA makes good AR15s but I think you made a good call on holding off on that one.

"Nice set ups! 100 yard target?"

Yes, 5 rounds thru each weapon at 100 yards.  The PSA shoots very well, likes the big Barnes bullets.  I could probably tighten up the groups a little with a little bigger scope with more magnification, but I topped it with a 2-7 Leupold to save weight.  The first two rounds are pretty much in the same hole bottom center, the next two went up and to the right again almost in the same hole, then the fifth round went up to 12 o'clock.  Probably shooter error as my eyes aren't nearly as good as they used to be and I have trouble with focusing using glasses and scopes.

I also shot the PSA at 200 and 300 yards and did a rapid fire target at 300 yards right at dusk the same day but didn't take any pics of them......Cliff

I've seen that on Palmetto, my boss has been buying an assload of lowers for 159 and $129. He just ordered several uppers today for 299 with the Magpul backup sights already on them

I just picked up one of those $299 uppers. I got the chrome lined nitrited barrel, NiB bolt carrier group, low profile m-lok rail, back up sites, and charging handle. That's a screaming good deal

I thought so too! My boss gives me all the pieces to put together & go run the hell out of them at the range with his ammo. Be better if he was paying me to, but fun none the less?

I built my first ar15 using a rifle kit from PSA, it turned out so good that I wanted to do an PA10, which I did, but it was a little more complicated. I did get it all sorted out, and it runs great now.

part of that process, since everything was sold out all the time, I ended up buying a pair of matched lowers, one ar15, one PA10, and through that process, I used that new ar15 lower on my old rifle, leaving me with a complete lower sitting around. That is why I just ordered the $299 upper deal. This will set me up with one ar15 with a big honking scope and high end everything for target shooting, and one more down and dirty with plain irons on it.

"I just picked up one of those $299 uppers. I got the chrome lined nitrited barrel"

The "nitride" barrels are typically not chrome lined.  They do offer chrome lined barrels but those uppers and quite a bit more expensive.  Just check it to make sure because if it's just plain 4150 chrome moly steel it will rust like a bastard and may be all green if you pull it out for the next outing after putting it away "wet"..........Cliff

I'm not familiar with what's good & what's not in the ar10 arena.  What do you guys think of the quality of the Palmetto builds? I've been looking at this one, your thoughts & opinions....

I have this exact rifle, and it runs fine, but it required a trip through the PSA warranty system.

I bought the rifle used, from a seller who said he'd bought it new from PSA about 2 years ago.  When I got it, the rifle would smokestack and FTE.  (Here's a thread: https://forum.308ar.com/topic/17011-another-pa-10-fte-and-maybe-a-clue/.)

I sent some pics of the failure to the PSA warranty folks, they sent a prepaid UPS label, and in 2 or 3 weeks I had a new upper.  I've had it to the range one time, and so far it runs fine, both factory ammo and a few reloads.

Key to the process was that neither I nor the original purchaser had altered the rifle, so whatever was messing up was all PSA parts, interacting correctly or not, whatever, their problem.  PSA states that their warranty covers this -- sounds like forever -- and they came through in my case.  So I am now officially a PSA booster.

Now that I have a working baseline rifle, I may try some of the mods discussed on this forum.  I'm new to the AR platform, and will probably go slow, but there's a lot of interesting stuff here.  FWIW, I've already set up a forward mounted 2-7x IER scope, which I like pretty well, and found an M-LOK sling swivel mount, to use in prone position shooting.  (And yes, this rifle is heavy.)

P.S. -- I am the same "gunwonk" that posted about that FTE, but for some reason that ID doesn't work any more.  I can log on as "gunwonk", and click on stuff, but none of the text boxes work, and I can't enter any content.  Also, can't complain to management, because that requires entering something into a text box!  WTF.  Whatever.  Anyhow, I'll use this ID until it stops working. ?
