You can definitely do it. Making a barrel would be much trickier and require some new kind of composite, but definitely possible.

I really hope this comes about because; as stated above, if it does, gun control laws loose their effect and the gun control lobby is defeated by technology.

Of course, 3D printers have the potential to effect the entire consumer industry the way music downloads effected the music industry. The ability to produce this stuff on your own will both make products cheaper and easier to come by but also force the industry to rethink how they will make their profits. This effects more then the gun world.

I've been thinking about getting a 3D printer myself for firearm accessory experiments.

If you wanted to run a piston system (keeping the heat out of the receiver) you could 3D print both the upper and lower, then use standard parts to complete the build.

Y'all know it's just a matter of time before a company releases spools of ABS in Magpul colors.

Better yet... How many companies will buy a heavy duty 3D printer, with top end products, then rent time  on those machines to be used by customers to print "what ever they want". Hell, I'm thinking of starting a company right now!!!

Here are links to the fellow's blog, about printing a 3d lower.  Parts 1 and 2, respectively:

That was a pretty neat read there 98Z5V. Seemed like he had some problems with the layers separating and some cracking when stress was applied to certain areas of the plastic. I wounder if some kind of heat treatment or epoxy coating would keep this from happening.

He had some kind of treatment he was doing to those areas, and he changed the programming on the front take-down pin lugs.  I'm not even closely familiar with the stuff he was using to treat the layer separation, but he stated some product he was using.  <dontknow>

I didn't catch the part about the change in programming. I was thinking along the line of coating the entire receiver instead of just repairing the week spots. Do you think it feasible?
