Catchdog Posted November 24, 2012 Report Posted November 24, 2012 Hello, been a lurker here for awhile. Been digging through the forum and I can't quite come up with what I need. I am the proud owner of a heavy s.o.b of an LR-308 Classic. I just ordered a Rainier 16" barrel, and I'm going to go with a free float tube, BUIS, and all that fancy stuff, but I'm wondering if I'll have to get a new barrel extension to go with the new barrel. I'm basically wanting to build something lighter and shorter, because I've noticed that even packing that pig around on a four wheeler, it get's heavy and cumbersome. Am I going down the right track so far?
imschur Posted November 24, 2012 Report Posted November 24, 2012 No the barrel extension come properly installed on the barrel
Catchdog Posted November 25, 2012 Author Report Posted November 25, 2012 OK, so will I run into headspace problems then?
edgecrusher Posted November 25, 2012 Report Posted November 25, 2012 OK, so will I run into headspace problems then?If you call when you order and send them your bolt they will headspace for you
Catchdog Posted November 26, 2012 Author Report Posted November 26, 2012 To finish it off I'm going to go with a DD 7.62 12" Lite Rail, Spikes Tactical Dynacomp, and a Magpul ACS stock. Again, am I headed in the right direction?
Matt.Cross Posted November 26, 2012 Report Posted November 26, 2012 To finish it off I'm going to go with a DD 7.62 12" Lite Rail, Spikes Tactical Dynacomp, and a Magpul ACS stock. Again, am I headed in the right direction? That depends on what you want to accomplish. What is the intended purpose of this rifle? Welcome to the forums by the way.. <thumbsup>
Catchdog Posted November 26, 2012 Author Report Posted November 26, 2012 Thank you. I guess I'm wanting My LR to by a little lighter, and more easily managed. As is stands now, it's just to damned heavy and cumbersome. I intend on using it to hunt and a WSHTF main stick. Since I'm not a good long range shooter (400 yrds plus), I don't want a tacticool, space shuttle door gunner approved behemoth of a rifle.
Matt.Cross Posted November 26, 2012 Report Posted November 26, 2012 Based on your description so far, you seem headed in the right direction. Check out the JP Rifles LMOS carrier and captured buffer spring when you get the chance. That could possibly save you some weight as well.
StainTrain Posted November 26, 2012 Report Posted November 26, 2012 Excellent choice in barrels. I purchased the 18 inch Select and although I was skeptical about the accuracy claims, I must say it has been every bit a sub-MOA barrel (168gr GMM).
Catchdog Posted November 26, 2012 Author Report Posted November 26, 2012 My problem is, I'm not a sub moa shooter. Especially with a scope, for some reason irons and red dots work better for me.
unforgiven Posted November 26, 2012 Report Posted November 26, 2012 Welcome from Indiana brother Catchdog. With practice you'll be sub-moa. <thumbsup>
Catchdog Posted November 26, 2012 Author Report Posted November 26, 2012 Do you know somewhere that sells practice? ;D
unforgiven Posted November 27, 2012 Report Posted November 27, 2012 You buy it with each drop of the hammer brother. <lmao> <thumbsup>
Catchdog Posted November 27, 2012 Author Report Posted November 27, 2012 Does anybody want to make a charitable donation of ammo? You can deduct it from your taxes :P
Matt.Cross Posted November 27, 2012 Report Posted November 27, 2012 Charitable donations are a sort of rarity here... Somebody out of the kindness of their heart will send Tom a gas tube roll pin occasionally... <laughs>However, malicious enabling of uncontrollable spending, is highly common. It's a way of life here, you'll get used to it... <thumbsup>
Catchdog Posted November 27, 2012 Author Report Posted November 27, 2012 Yeah, this is a forum for a very hungry and very expensive beast to feed. Actually more expensive than feeding a horse.
Matt.Cross Posted November 27, 2012 Report Posted November 27, 2012 Yeah, this is a forum for a very hungry and very expensive beast to feed. Actually more expensive than feeding a horse.I know where you're coming from, for certain. I'm getting into reloading as a result of the cost of commercial ammo, and the need to fine tune my ammo for the best accuracy.
Catchdog Posted November 27, 2012 Author Report Posted November 27, 2012 I've got all the stuff to start reloading except a bench. I'm basically just gonna reload milspec, quantity over quality I guess.
Catchdog Posted December 1, 2012 Author Report Posted December 1, 2012 This is what my boomstick looks like before. I rattle canned a paint job on it when I first got it, so I wouldn't shy away from carrying it in my work pickup. I'd kind of like to strip it, then repaint later. Will mineral spirits hurt it at all?
Robocop1051 Posted December 1, 2012 Report Posted December 1, 2012 Will mineral spirits hurt it at all?How else would you get the paint off?Toss the plastic parts in the garbage. Mineral Spirits are petroleum based and will probably eat those parts right up. Your metal is going to be very exposed and dry afterwards. You will need to do a thorough lube and grease afterwards of EVERYTHING. Otherwise Mr Rust is going to pay a BIG visit on your rifle. if you decide to paint it after, just use a degreaser with a scotchbrite pad to get it naked and scuffed up, and then paint away.
unforgiven Posted December 1, 2012 Report Posted December 1, 2012 Nice job with the rattle can brother Catchdog. <thumbsup>
Catchdog Posted December 1, 2012 Author Report Posted December 1, 2012 Thanks. I have a brindle dog, that can vanish in plain sight, I was trying for that.
unforgiven Posted December 1, 2012 Report Posted December 1, 2012 Brindle is so cool like tiger striped pajamas.Tried to rescue a pitbull same color had to give him back he was a severe head case :(.Someone ruined that poor dog.
