Kind of tossing the idea of maybe going 300wsm with 24" barrel but made a search and came across this statement by Danes armory

"The WSM calibers are a novality , rounds are $2+ each and I had to taylor the handloads to 95% power or they wont cycle. But the range is 1000 to 1200 yards and velocity is from 2900 to 3900fps. Also made heavies at 200gr and 220gr in the 30 cal."

Would going 300wsm be a bad idea? ( just want the biggest damage delt)

I've watched some ballistic gel videos but i dont think they where accurate.

Thought?

300 wsm is a very powerful caliber ! An adjustable gas block or carrier weights would allow a higherpower factor of the loads. The way my rifle is setup now limits the ammo I use. The next barrel I would drill a smaller gas port hole and all will be good !

I feel so embarrassed to ask does the gas port hole not come pre drilled to the correct size.

Still a novice

Most definally not a stupid question.

To some companies it is a trade secret. Different calibers, different gas length system all use different size gas port hole. Specs give ranges of sizes.

It is the last process of a barrel or upper build. Too small a hole and the gun won't cycle and if it too large it will have a different set of problems. On custom builds the gas port hole would start off smal and may be increased to make the rifle function properly.

So to answer that question is ... Yes , but it may not be the right size.

If you're going to go big, why not 325 WSM?

You have to find the brass before you can buy it. It is not cheap ! The bullets are an odd size also with a limited amount of weights to choose from.

With 30 caliber it has the widest selection of bullet weights and designs on the market.
