Gray05
So, I had a criterion barrel picked out at Fulton Armory. It is no longer available. I'm now back hunting for a 16" light weight chrome lined or nitride barrel. I could really care less as far as gas port location, specific metals, etc. 16" light weight chrome or nitride. Is that too much to ask? Anybody know of anybody making quality barrels like this?

Gray05
I've seen this barrel before. But, it doesn't show to be chromed or nitride? Or I am I missing that?

Gray05
Wow, I had no idea Mega was selling barrels. Those look nice but heavy. 2.5lb is a good bit for what I plan on doing.
washguy
Rainiers 16" of which I have is also 2.5 The lightest 16" was being sold by Harrison at ar performance, but I think they are gone :) Wash
Gray05
That's correct. They are both "medium" contour. Maybe I was dreaming but I feel as though 1.6 or 1.7 is the lightest .308 16" I've seen. I feel like I sound picky, but this gun is almost exclusively meant for free standing shooting. Is 2.5 pretty manageable for free standing?
washguy
you can try Bison Arms and have them contour you a light one? so doing what when freestanding? hunting? paper punching? home defense? :) Wash weight saving .....slick side lower/upper light handguard light butt stock Edited January 28, 2014 by washguy
BLKSHEEP
Yeah, it sounds like you want a 16" pencil profile barrel, I'm not sure who makes them but someone here may chime in soon. I think Wash is correct in that you may have to get one custom made. Mostly what I find are med. contour profiles. http://www.cmmginc.com/product_p/38dea7a.htm http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/barrel-parts/rifle-barrels/dpms-308-sportical-barrel-prod44673.aspx http://www.lothar-walther.com/473.php And then there's Carbon Fiber >:D > http://proofresearch.com/barrels/ http://www.christensenarms.com/products/barrels/ Edited January 29, 2014 by BLKSHEEP

Hog hunting most of all. As with most guns, defense if needed. Hopping on and off the four wheeler, on foot trailing the dogs, etc I want it to be relatively mobile. I of course plan on using a light weight handguard, butt stock, etc. But, barrel is going to be the majority of the weight hanging out there. And I have a CMMG LPK and it is lackluster. I have personally had trouble with them, to put it VERY briefly. There are others on this site who bought off-the-shelf LW barrels and like them very much. My decision to avoid them is on principle, not on their product. CMMG would be 2nd to last choice, with LW being the last. ;) Edited January 29, 2014 by Matt.Cross

Being from South Lousy-ana :P myself & knowing the type of extreme hunting conditions you're engaging in and I'm curious as to why you would rule out Stainless Steel ? Lothar Walther makes some of the best barrels on the market, getting one in a timely manner is another story ::) To my knowledge CMMG barrels are fine, I wouldn't own anything else they sell though. Lighter & shorter is definitely better for hog hunting with dogs! 308AR's range from 7-12 lbs. generally, mine is closer to the 11 lb. mark stripped and I wouldn't even consider bringing it hog hunting(w/dogs) The 8lb. range would be about the same as shooting your average scoped bolt action rifle. You could always buy a factory barrel like the dpms and try it out and if needed have it re contoured later by a smith.

Less about ruling out stainless steel and more abut wanting a coating or treatment to help deal with wear. It's not like I'm going be melting my barrel in a firefight, but I do want that added protection. Ha yes, it's the kind of hunting where you don't lug around a lot. But I want the extra power of .308 over .223. I know it's doable with this platform, but it takes some extra effort.
shibiwan
I guess I lucked out with my CMMG that shoots like clockwork and does 200-yard groupings like this. :D
