CB300 Posted March 22, 2014 Report Posted March 22, 2014 Hi all Debating about the Osprey piston on a 300 with a 16" carbine length gas system. Izzy from Osprey stated he has a piston in a 300Black. Hitch is his is running an 11" barrel. My curent 300 is a carbine 16" Has anyone used a piston on the carbine length? What were the results? I had an Adams Arms on another build and had no sucess getting it to operate. Didn't matter super/ subs NADA luck. Single rounds only. That one is now on a 5.56 platform. Went back to the DI and have had no issues <dontknow> Any help/ info is appreciated.
Robocop1051 Posted March 23, 2014 Report Posted March 23, 2014 I'm one of those "if it ain't broke..." kind of guys. Don't get me wrong though. I own a piston rifle, and it shoots real good too. I built it just to say I built one. I have a second piston build in the works now, but it's for the very dirty 7.62x39. I wanted a cleaner shooting rifle if I plan on shooting nasty Red Army surplus ammo. I have a DI 300Blk 14.5" with a carbine gas. It shoots like a dream.
CB300 Posted March 23, 2014 Author Report Posted March 23, 2014 (edited) Robo, I know what you are saying about "If it ain't broke..." I just has pissed me off to to the point that I want to MAKE it work the way I want it to. I guess some things just aren't supposed to be... Unless I were to replace the barrel with a pistol length gas system and dump another bucket load of cash  Or just build the AR308 I want to do  instead...better idea Thanks for the info. shibiwan Posted March 23, 2014 Report Posted March 23, 2014 Stick with a pistol gas system. More reliable for the 300 AAC. Save up for the 308 later. :D
survivalshop Posted March 23, 2014 Report Posted March 23, 2014 Shouldn't be any reason a piston system would not work , if , its set up properly . Gas port size on barrel ,Buffer /spring combo , may want to use a AR15 BCG & not an enhanced AR 15 or M16. May need an adj. gas system , you can tweak to get the system to function properly.
98Z5V Posted March 23, 2014 Report Posted March 23, 2014 Stick with a pistol gas system. More reliable for the 300 AAC. Gas system length depends on what you're shooting through the rifle, because there's such a wide variance on ammo configurations... One isn't more dependable than the other, for every situation. Depends on what you shoot.
roger7007 Posted September 29, 2014 Report Posted September 29, 2014 I'm building a 300 Blackout with a Adams Arms piston conversion. Has anybody worked up a functioning hand load for a piston conversion? I'm using a Daniel Defense 16" 1 in 8" barrel, and a H3 buffer, a Palmetto State armory lower. If anyone has worked up some hand loads that cycle the action well, please pass on the info. Thank you, Roger

Thank you, Roger You typically determine what buffer you need, after you determine how your load is cycling. Food for thought. If you're developing a load to work with a specifically-weighted buffer, you're doing it wrong. Also, lower receiver doesn't matter.
survivalshop Posted October 2, 2014 Report Posted October 2, 2014 Is there a Piston system specifically made for a 300 BLK ?
shibiwan Posted October 2, 2014 Report Posted October 2, 2014 (edited) I'm getting the max reliability using light buffers with the 300 AAC. The recoil is insignificant and going to a light buffer doesn't seem to make the recoil any worse. You may want to reconsider the H3 setup. Edited October 2, 2014 by shibiwan
