imschur Posted January 15, 2011 Report Posted January 15, 2011 I should have it mid next week.15.5" VTAC on an 18" barrel. Going to look strange
Matt.Cross Posted January 15, 2011 Report Posted January 15, 2011 Actually, I think a full length FFT on an 18" barrel sets you up for a nice SPR-looking mod. I'm throwing around some ideas for a .308 SPR tribute.
imschur Posted January 15, 2011 Author Report Posted January 15, 2011 We shall see. I should have the upper together by next weekend.
TacBlade Posted January 15, 2011 Report Posted January 15, 2011 I like the look of a long handguard on a barrel. I guess its hiding the gas block is what I like!!! I gotta see pics of it when you are done!!!
98Z5V Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 15.5" VTAC on an 18" barrel. Going to look strangeI thought my Troy 13.8" was going to look strange on an 18" barrel - but I loved it! <thumbsup> ;D
J.Boyette Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 I have a 14" DD on my 18" and I love it. Its funny looking when you place it next to the 16" with a 12" DD. They look like twins. John
Titan Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 Mine has a 16" barrel, but maybe it will help give an idea.
skeeter Posted May 29, 2011 Report Posted May 29, 2011 Now that youve had some time to use the rifle with the 15.5 VTAC how do you like it? I ask because I am trying to decide if I want the 12.5 or the 15.5, it will be going on a 20" barrel.
imschur Posted May 29, 2011 Author Report Posted May 29, 2011 no, no time with it all. Not enough good weather for any shooting
JMoto Posted May 29, 2011 Report Posted May 29, 2011 is thee any chance of getting an ID measurement? I am wondering if it will clear a particular gas block.
imschur Posted May 29, 2011 Author Report Posted May 29, 2011 Been down this road a few times for folks. Tell me what block, I may already know. Also keep in mind the VTAC's do not center around the barrel.Additionally I wrote a bit about it here on the main page. Look for a small paragraph above the MA-TEN images and below the Brownells 308 barrel picture

I am running vtac/jp on some of my AR rigs but have yet to make the switch on the 308 caliber rifles. I get conflicting info from everyone.
imschur Posted May 29, 2011 Author Report Posted May 29, 2011 I think there is either incorrect, bad, improperly interpreted or changed dimensions out there. Im running the DPMS SASS gas block. That block has a higher than milspec gas tube location resulting in a taller gas block than most other similar blocks. The PRI should be fine. In fact I have a suspicion the DPMS is this PRI

In fact I have a suspicion the DPMS is this PRII had the same suspicions, but have not confirmed it. The dimensions they have for their adjustable version are very close, but because of the shelf for the adjustment screw it will not fit under the factory sass tube. Vtac lists the ID as 1.75 which is the same as the AR-15 tube. If that is the case it is a no-go but in addition to that , it is not centered on the nut so that ID may be irrelevant. OK my brain hurts.edit, I have read every article on this board in regards to this subject, that is the original reason I had joined.
imschur Posted May 29, 2011 Author Report Posted May 29, 2011 My inbox through the main site got this question A LOT. Did you read what I wrote on the main page?
imschur Posted May 29, 2011 Author Report Posted May 29, 2011 What we really need is someone assembling to create a drawing with the bore centerline to the top of the VTAC. I believe a few folks here have provided dimensions but Im not sure anyone has put it all together on one piece of paper.I can probably do it next week
