I was in a similar situation last year and bought a somewhat unknown rds by armasight. Nothing really wrong with it, but it was nothing special and I traded it off. Sort of my little lesson to only buy well known and vetted optics. If it is discontinued, most likely a reason for that.

Lots of maybe and could have. I'll wait for the body cam. The fact that the department hung this guy out so fast, and that the other LEOs on the scene didn't fire, speaks volumes though.

I understand keeping it on a personal weapon, but after the disclosure I'd think agencies would ban them on duty weapons. There is now a liability built into it that any lawyer could exploit.
