Those measurements posted here are a perfect example of how varied the specs can be. I should pull my Armalite bolt and add those measurements, maybe a sticky for BCG measurements is in order? The challenge sure does increase the satisfaction level when you get it done!

I'm anxious to see if the Wolf ammo will function, as soft as the ZQI cases come out I don't think I'm heavy on the gas but I guess this could change as I get more rounds in. I'd have to go back and add them up again but I think I'm near 200 rounds so it should be pretty settled in now. I won't drive the final pin in the G block till I'm 100% sure it will not need to come off till the barrel needs changed, then I'll be bugging Tom for those "hand drill" installation instructions that Geissele says won't work;) The wife just put in an order for a 5.56 build for her. She has arthritis real bad in her hands so I'll be looking for soft shooting and large, easy to manipulate controls, but that will be a while and another thread............

I noticed he sells his parts kits with "Reliability Doughnuts", wonder why they don't get installed on the bolts from the start??????? http://www.dwilsonmfg.com/store/p24/308_Bolt_Carrier_Small_Parts_kits.html

Welcome from Iowa and Thank you for your service! You've found the right place for build information, these guys will guide you right through from start to finish!

I neglected to shoot any groups for accuracy but even with the wide variety of ammo a center hold on 5 inch steel at 100 yards gave me 90 hits out of the 100, lots of just catching the edge but under the circumstances I'll take it. As soon as I restock the match ammo supply I'll get a 100 yard 2 round group pictured for Breastroker and a 20 rounder for the rest of you!;)

Finicky beasts these 308Ar's! I changed the Wilson extractor spring for an Armalite spring with doughnut and plug and the issue went away. I didn't mess with the ejector spring and it seems to be working fine as it is now. I'm loving the NiB coating, doubt I ever run anything else in any future builds!

I used my calipers for getting the numbers, the drill bits didn't come close to hitting the sizes they should have been. I checked the calipers on a 1 inch gauge I have in a micrometer set, it isn't right every time but most often it is. Sometimes it would be +/- .0005. I for sure had an extractor spring issue that was fixed with the Armalite spring but I'm pretty sure I needed the extra gas as well. The remanufactured stuff would short stroke every few rounds and the ZQI still doesn't eject with the authority I'd like to see but the other types and M80 ball stuff is fine. Still not sure I understand why the MK319 started functioning fine when it did, bad spring and all??????
-
GOT IT! No short strokes ejected everything I fed it, all the previously mentioned ammo plus 168gr FGMM, Fiocchi 175gr match, and Winchester 180 gr power point. I went to the .1005 port size, that stopped the short stroking with the remanufactured stuff but was still leaving most of the ZQI sitting on the mag:( I gave it a sprinkle of Armalite love with an extractor spring and the issue was solved. The ZQI still doesn't eject with the authority of the the MK319 but it reliably made it off the bench. 9 different types of ammo in 100 rounds and no issue. Last 20 were a mag full of Radway Green as fast as I could get on target, no issue. Now I have to find a box of the "still case" ammo and see if the rifle runs with it. I appreciate all the support here, without you guys it would have taken much more time and money to get where I am, if I got here at all! Thank You All!

That would be a "productive" way of showing us how all this light weight stuff performs...............

After my trials with getting a 16 inch 308 rifle length gas going I don't think I'd try the same in 5.56.....unless I see them working regularly for others. I was surprised to see one for sale and realize now that just because it's sold don't mean it works!

What is the base profile on that fluted barrel? Those are some DEEP looking cuts! What does the thinnest cross section measure? Carbine length gas system? Sounds like we have a similar break in procedure, I HATE all the cleaning but you only get one shot at it so I suck it up and scrub....... Just got my first ground up 308 build together, 10 Lbs. 3 oz with P=mag, ADM mount, and a 4x-16x PA scope with covers(no BUIS yet). I'll put a lighter scope on when I get the bugs worked out but this is my cheapo so I use it in case the thing blows up;) I never would have even bothered with a scale but thought of you so I checked it. I'm still working on getting the gas port sized correctly but I'm getting there. She is a pretty soft shooter so I should be able to stay on target easily, it will stay pretty warm when she gets put to work! Hope this isn't to productive, hate to mess up my reputation!

I was weaned off tit with PBR! Every time I brought Dad a beer I got to slurp the foam, I was pulling the tab for him by myself at 3........ -
Posted up the bolt measurements in SS's d. wilson thread. I'm going to give a spare Armalite extractor spring a run in this bolt, it is longer and a good bit stiffer. My extractor hook measurements are way off his but then that could be the measuring tool. The fact that the MK 319 ran so well makes me think a bit more gas will be a big help. Fingers crossed for the range trip tomorrow!

Got some measurements on my Wilson Bolt; Depth of the extractor groove best I could replicate your picture; .0545 This could be the size of the depth pin not fitting the curve in the groove the same. Depth of the extractor groove; Front .175 Rear(spring seat) .175 Distance between the center of the extractor claw to the ejector; .3275 Distance from the extractor lug to the opposite lug; .853 The extractor spring; .239 extractor spring from my Armalite spare parts; .255 The Armalite spring with plug and ring is noticeably stiffer and snaps into the recess of the wilson extractor while the wilson double spring easily falls out. I'll try some shots with the Armalite spring installed. If my issues continue after opening up the gas port more I will dig into the ejector and spring, for right now I don't want to mess with it, I don't have one of those fancy finger saving tools!

Drilled the port to .0975 and ran 20 rounds. Interesting results when I compare things to SS's thread on the face it would seem to be the same extractor issue. 10 rounds of ZQI, 8 stayed on top the mag, 2 just dribbled out onto the bench. 5 rounds of Freedom reman. 175 gr. Match, 1 short stroke, 2 laying on the mag and 2 made it off the bench. Here is the interesting string, MK 319 130 gr. penetrator round, all 5 ejected strongly, banging off the wall at 3 O'clock from the rifle, and then hitting me in the face. I knew this stuff felt a little hotter in my other rifles but there was a real dramatic difference today. These MK 319's are specifically designed for short barrel rifles, that combined with the lighter bullet and I would have thought the pressure would have been less but obviously I thought wrong. If it is the extractor/ejector issue then why would the MK319 function so well? The Freedom reman. stuff is all in LC cases so there shouldn't be any or much difference in the case The next bit size up I have measures .0985 then after that it hits .1005. I'm going to at least give the next size up a try. I'll also bring more of a variety of M80 ball stuff, FN, Radway, Indian from 1974 I think???? and some Pakistani stuff that seems pretty hot. So close but yet so far...........

I did get the calipers up and running so I'll try to get comparisons for your measurements.....been busy drilling and shooting.

80 rounds so far, back to the drill then the range again..................

Progress! My gas port is now .955 on my chinese calipers. I ran 20 rounds of cheap ZQI with about a 75% success rate. It was short stroking some like this; Raising hell with the finish on the front of the port......it is locking back on the bolt catch like it should on the last round but it leaves the brass sitting on the mag like this with the ZQI; I ran 5 rounds of the Freedom Munitions reman. 175 gr match, no issues, bolt locked back with no brass in sight. Ran 5 rounds of the MK319 130 gr. same thing, no issues. Even with the cheap and varied ammo I hit 25 of 30 on the 100 yard 5 inch steel circles. No new marks on the receiver by the buffer, I stuck with the 50 cents. Do I bump it out a couple more sizes on the port or shoot some more to see if it breaks in? I'm thinking maybe .0975 on the port? I don't want to go any further than I need to as it shoots pretty mild right now but want the reliability 100%
-
No love yet......I've made it to .0915 on the port size. Fired 10 rounds, the first shot there left the case in the chamber but all the rest pulled them out but only had varying degrees of ejection with none making it out of the rifle. One left the case laying on the mag with the carrier instead of the bolt being grabbed by the catch or the mag, pretty sure it was on the catch but the bolt went forward when I dropped the mag. sorry again for the crappy cell pictures. Here is what the port looks like after the test; I took 25 cents out then thinking the bolt may need more travel, I noticed some anodizing rubbed off on the lower just in front of the buffer that I didn't see before but it didn't get any worse after the last few rounds, I might have done it putting the buffer in and out??? Think I'll put the 25 cents back and drill a couple sizes bigger. Am I missing anything?

My old man drank it from the late 60's to the 90's, he has a beard but that's about as close to that description as he gets. The only reason he doesn't still drink it is he went "light", so he could drink more ;) -
I thought so as well but Rainier seems to think they can do it, they seem to have a decent reputation. Then again maybe that's why these are on sale.........
