Oh......forgot to say. I'm a BIG Armalite guy.

Check out 762sass from time to time. Or Armalite themselve as Unforgiven mentioned. Uppers come and go. Though it seems like everything is kinda scarce these days. Nothing wrong with the A2 model. I've got one also. They're the typical original infantry design. Just like our beloved Mr. Stoner designed them. They shoot nice. They're actually quite accurate. And when it comes down to it....they're designed to hit "man-sized" targets at a variety of distances. Flattops are just easier to modify with optics and accessories. But it doesn't necessarily make them better....just a different tool in the toolbox. Just my opinion........for what it's worth. Ron

I have to agree with Edge and Imschur. These are fun rifles, but not the most accurate. As far as reliability, I've got a PTR, and I pretty much just use it as a beater (being that it's just a clone, and not an HK). It's never burped, and eaten everything I've ever fed it....brass or steel cased. The only time it choked was when I tried running my can with it. It did not like that at all. <laughs> Other than that.....bang every time. Ron

You're right Edge. I was thinking bass-ackwards. I should know better....hell, my SASS is 1 in 10. And this is what happens when you (I) try to do too many things at one time. Your (my) brain slips outta gear. It'll never happen again........unless.....I've been drinking.

You can never have enough parts. Of course, you tend to keep building rifles that way.

Hmmmmm.....this does have me wondering about the 716 shorty (12.5") that my gun pusher said that he was getting in February. He's offering 1st chance on one of the few that he's getting. Of course the bastard knows that I've been on a short-barrel binge. <laughs>

Well that's an easy question str8. Get an Armalit LPK, and then you have to build a DPMS rifle....to use up the spare parts that you have. grin And I'd go with the tac 2 stage. I've got them on all of mine. Of course it's a matter of preference. But I just like the creep you have of the first stage, then the snap of the 2nd stage. Very comfortable...to me at least. For what it's worth. 2 types of Armalite Rifles. A and B. The type A uses the Pmags, where as the B uses the Armalite mags.

The type that goes bang. <laughs> Sorry.....couldn't help myself. It was too easy. On a more serious note. 1 in 12 huh? You might wanna start in the 168 grain area. Just a thought.

<thumbsup> about when the ranges get crowded with morons. As with anything, there's always the few that can spoil a good day at the range. That's when it's time to go back to house and drink....and clean the rifles.....and drink a little more.....and well, you know. HA

Welcome aboard my brother. I like your rain or shine comment. I often go to the range when it's raining. These beasts were built for battle. Don't baby them. Nothing a little cleaning and oiling won't fix. Now,of course.......you can hug them every once in a while. grin

Sounds like you have the right idea there. Build the type of rig that you want, and what you want it for. You're estimated budget range sounds pretty good.

Thanks for the ideas fella's. Appreciate it. I'll keep everyone up to date (periodically) on this build. As I said in one of my other posts, it's still gonna be a couple months before I can assemble this bad boy. I'll keep searching....but hell.....I ain't afraid to shove a rail thru a bandsaw if that's what it ends up taking. grin

Anyone who says that they're not a fan of the large AR platform, obviously hasn't shot one. Hell, I was never really an AR guy in general.......that is, until I bought my first AR-10. Now I'm starting to get the damn things stacked up like cordwood. Sheeesh.....gotta get yet another gang-box now to store them in.

I'm thinking that I might go with the Ranier rail that Edge suggested. It seems like it'll cover up most of the barrel, and get the look that I'm going for. No matter what, I've still got a couple months till the tax stamp gets here to make a final decision.

Just throwing this pic up so everybody can get a visual of the difference. The lower rifle is a regular 16" carbine that I built last year. As you can probably tell. I appear to have an Armalite disease.

Well, knowing our beloved BATFE, it should only be about another 4 or 5 months before she can be fully assembled.

I'm kinda liking that Ranier rail Edge. And it's the perfect length that I'm looking for. Don't know how I ran right by it. I've been thru that site recently....must have missed it somehow (meaning stupidity). This is exactly why I threw all of this out here. I knew that between all the guys here, we'd come up with something. As she sits, this baby is approximately 31" with the stock fully collapsed. It's weighing in just under 7 pounds with no guts in the upper. I'm looking forward to getting this one put together. And now I'm gonna end up with a spare handguard. Oh well.....looks like I'm gonna have to plan on building yet another carbine. HA!
