Not new to AR nor .308 but new to both in one package
mrmackc replied to taylorkh's topic in Introductions
Welcome from Central Texas. BTW, I've been told that DPMS makes the flowers for Fulton. OI have a $799 DPMS factory built 16" Oracle that shoots a .75" group at 100 yrs. with Federal loaded M80 ammo that looks like military (brass is nasty looking) has a drop in 3 pound trigger, Tubb buffer spring $200 Bushnell.308 BCD scope and the rest is stock. I did a light polishing on the upper and BCG, feed ramps. This is a bit better than my national match .3006 Garand will do with 1962 -
AMEN, you are doing a great job here as a caretaker.

at night you can use a street light to boresight with unless the view is restricted by the rifle receiver like on a mini 14 or a lever action in daylight I have used the top of a power pole. You gotta remember that boresighting is line of sight and you have to sight in at a range at a known sight distance to allow for a specific bullet drop compensation.

I have BSA optical and bushnell laser boresighters and also a .308 and .223 laser cartridge in the chamber for AR platform rifles, the optic are for bolt action and traditional style rifles as the optic , I like the Bushnell .22 to .50 laser ones that have several plastic bore pieces for a quick boresighting, I push the tapered mandrell in the bore as far as the taper bore ahaft will go and rotate it slowly, while looking thru the scope to see if the laser is centered in the bore, it usually is off a bit, so I allow for that. The lasers need a paper target, with inches marked, to allow for the distance between the bore and scope reticle, when used inside . I do use them inside the shop at 30' and you do need to measure the distance from center of the scope to the center of the bore. I use the laser in the yard at 50 yards before going to the range. The laser isn't too awfully bright out past 50 yards on a bright sunny Texas summer day.

Sorry MikeD, but computers are out, gotta have an Iphone. Galaxy or somethine with Pokemon running on it! You have to have a hand on the phone, and the other hand on the Glock or Taurus. They don't even have anythine to hold up the P.J bottoms except for the boxers. Bio of Dallas Cop shooter from AP article: By WILL WEISSERT, REESE DUNKLIN and MITCH WEISS, Associated Press Dallas sniper was loner; Army sent him home from Afghanistan MESQUITE, Texas (AP) — The Dallas sniper had been sent home from Afghanistan after being accused of sexually harassing a female, and was described as a loner who followed black militant groups on social media. Micah Xavier Johnson, who fatally shot five officers and wounded seven more before police killed him with a remote-controlled bomb on Friday, lived with family members in the blue-collar suburb of Mesquite, where he played basketball for hours at a time. Friends there said the 25-year-old black man didn't seem interested in politics, but his Facebook page suggests otherwise: He "liked" black militant groups including the African American Defense League and the New Black Panther Party, which was founded in Dallas. His photo showed him wearing a dashiki and raising his fist over the words "Black Power," and his cover shot carried the red, black and green Pan-African flag. For six years starting in 2009, Johnson served in the Army Reserve as a private first class with a specialty in carpentry and masonry, the military said. In May 2014, six months into his Afghanistan tour, he was accused of sexual harassment by a female soldier. The Army sent him stateside, recommending an "other than honorable discharge," said Bradford Glendening, the military lawyer who represented him. That recommendation was "highly unusual," Bradford said, since counseling is usually ordered before more drastic steps are taken. "In his case, it was apparently so egregious, it was not just the act itself," Glendening told The Associated Press. "I'm sure that this guy was the black sheep of his unit." According to a court filing Glendening read over the phone Friday, the victim said she wanted Johnson to "receive mental help," while also seeking a protective order to keep him away from her and her family, wherever they went. Johnson was ordered to avoid all contact with her. Glendening said Johnson was set to be removed from the Army in September 2014 because of the incident, but instead got an honorable discharge months later — for reasons he can't understand. "Someone really screwed up," he said. "But to my client's benefit." When authorities searched Johnson's home Friday they found bomb-making materials, ballistic vests, rifles, ammunition, and a personal journal of combat tactics. Dallas Police Chief David O. Brown said Johnson told negotiators before he was killed that he was acting alone and was unaffiliated with any group. The chief said Johnson cited the fatal shootings of black men by police officers in Louisiana and Minnesota, which prompted the protest march in Dallas and many other cities. "The suspect said he was upset with white people and wanted to kill white people, especially white officers," Brown said. Activists with Black Lives Matter, whose peaceful march police were guarding as he opened fire, repudiated the shootings, and it wasn't immediately clear if Johnson had any connection to the movement, which has disavowed violence. But one of the groups Johnson "liked" on Facebook, the African American Defense League, posted a message earlier in the week encouraging violence against police in response to the killing in Louisiana. "The Pig has shot and killed Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana! You and I know what we must do and I don't mean marching, making a lot of noise, or attending conventions. We must 'Rally The Troops!' It is time to visit Louisiana and hold a barbeque." The message was attributed to Dr. Mauricelm-Lei Millere, a leader in the organization. Another group Johnson "liked" was the New Black Panther Party, whose leaders have "long expressed virulently anti-white and anti-Semitic opinions," according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Johnson also "liked" the Nation of Islam and the Black Riders Liberation Party, which the center described as "hate groups." Among Johnson's other social media likes were groups that focus on the history and accomplishments of African-Americans, such as Black Love Matters, the Nubian Rootz Cultural Center, and I Love Black Archaeologist, a web series whose main character uses a time machine to visit famous black people. The Dallas Police Department said Johnson's Facebook account also included information about Richard Griffin, also known as Professor Griff, who "embraces a radical form of Afrocentrism." On his Facebook page Friday afternoon, Griffin, a member of Public Enemy — an influential hip hop group known for its politically charged lyrics — said he does "not advocate killing Cops." Johnson had no criminal history, according to authorities. Local court records show his parents were divorced in 1996. He was believed to have shared a two-story tan brick home in Mesquite with family members. He graduated from JohnHornHigh School in Mesquite, where he was a ROTC member, school district officials said. Sharon Carter, who works in the district's registrar's office and lives near Johnson's home, said she saw him occasionally wearing military fatigues as he left for Army reservist training, but never saw him armed. "They say he was standoffish in high school," Carter said. "I never really spoke to him. He kept to himself." A relative had praised Johnson on his birthday in 2014 as "definitely Army strong" on his Facebook page, calling him an "entertaining, loving, understanding, not to mention handsome friend, brother (and) son." After Johnson was killed, a relative posted on her Facebook page, "I keep saying its not true...my eyes hurt from crying. Y him??? And why was he downtown." She did not respond to Facebook messages. Friend Israel Cooper said Johnson went by "Xavier,' his middle name, had a "cool vibe," wasn't really political and seemed educated. Cooper said he and Johnson played basketball at a park near his home. "He would be out there for eight hours. Like it was his job. Just hoopin'," he said. Cooper said that when he heard the suspect was Johnson, he "was in disbelief because he's just not like a violent or rough dude." "So I was, 'Nah, it's probably another Xavier somewhere, you know,'" Cooper said. "But then, with pictures on the internet and stuff, I'm like 'OK.' " Cooper added: "It's the quiet ones that just do the most devastating stuff. You never see it coming. But then it's more expected, like 'I should have known.'"

I am a retired gunsmith with 30 years owning a shop but didn't work on or shoot anything of AR persuasion till a couple years ago when I got the black rifles"itch" . I bought a Panther arms LR308. Came over to this site and read up and studied up on the rifle, that I knew was a shooter. Tore it down, measured, cleaned, polished and boresighted shot different ammo tuned and familiarizing before making mods, two custom triggers buffers and springs. I wouldn't start a new build with knowing how a working acceptable shooting rifle is put together correctly.

Yep, local LE word is that Brown has dropped his dobber in the dirt a time or two. He does have the gift of gab with an audience. He took over a bunch of " good ole boys" in big "D" the numbers show that he runs a tight ship and often sails it into the wind. mms

Welcome from another Texas Shooter. Central Texas it is...

I was think about a nice boneless1" rib-eye broiled MR and vacuum sealed and stuffed into a padded grill mate glove held in place with duct tape on your Tee shirt, much more masculine don't you think?....And then you could have a nice snack driving back from the range. Don't forget to leave a brewshi in the cooler. Actually I keep a couple of wife's hot pot holders and some duct tape in the range bag. I learned to do that from an old dove hunting farmer, who always hunts dove in a Tee shirt and overalls.

I am with you on this, The QD mounts that I have seen are useless after awhile, they get loose, how long does it take to loosen a 1/2" hex slotted nut? anyway?
-
Whoops, never had to measure either, I had some customers bring in a couple of basket cases where scopes rings and mounts didn't fit so that calls for measurements, usually because of bargain buying, and they don't like the news that "it fiddint dit". It seems to me that a there are way too much stuff associated with "black rifles" and so called tac-ops stuff being pushed on us consumers that don't fit than should be.

This has already caused me to pick up the 4MOA .223 mini 14 or the 100 yd model 94 lever action than the 308 or the 3006 if there is much walking involved. One rifle I love to carry and hunt with is my .50 cal. Percussion muzzleloader mountain rifle I built in 1975 for whitetail muzzleloader season. One shot .49 round lead ball pushed with 100grains of black powder and deadly to 100 yards. No glass sight. It wakes up the critters!.

Did you measure the scope tube and I.D. of the rings. Screws torqued down ? Do the front and back vertical and horizontal I.D. of the rings the id's should be with in a few 10/thousands. I did both sets. The AR308 Bushnell 4 X 18 scope takes 1" rings and the AR223 1X4.5 scope takes the smaller metric ring. too small will egg shape the tube and too large will let the tube move. Many shooters lap the rings I never have seen a need to lap rings.
-
It would be 2 or three inches too far to the rear for me but I use the eye relief built in to the scope . I find a good cheek weld on the stock then slide the scope to get a full scope view and nail it there. Once I shoot it and it looks good I mark the rail and the mounts with a dot of red paint for reference. These are the Burris mounts I use for rhe Bushnell AR308 BDC.
