SO, last weekend we go back out there. I've got a couple Army buddies in town, so I take a bunch of guns with me so they can shoot. I took the .308 out there so I could shoot, but that's what the other two guys were all over (with the 20" 5.56 gun). My son is busy loading the CMMG .22 mags again - doing much better, I might add - and tightening up his shooting on it. Very good. Well, he wanted on the .308 at the end of the range session. It's got the 2lb Jard trigger in there, and even though he did alright with that trigger in the 20" gun, I didn't trust his trigger control with the .308. I loaded one round per mag for him. <dontknow> I already warned him ahead of time about the recoil. He shot the .22 a TON, then he thought the recoil from 5.56 was really something. Compared to the .22. I talked to him abaout the .308, and he saw us shoot it, and he wanted a go at it. Now, he's 14, 5-foot 4-inches, and 102lbs... He ain't Ah-nold... <laughs> One round in the mag, he fires... OOOOOOWWWW!!! AGAIN! Right on, boy. <thumbsup> Here's the first shot from it (first pic) ...then his face when the "OOOOOOWWW!!!" came out... <lmao> Tomorrow, we shoot my new .45... <thumbsup>

So, two Sundays ago, I take the kid to the local range. Goes out to 600 yards. Started him out on the M4 with CMMG .22LR bolt. He put 300 rounds out there, swiss-cheesed his target, and really took to the fundamentals well. I'm happy. So, I've got the 14.5" gun and the 20" precision gun, both 5.56. He wants to shoot the 14.5 gun. Well, alright. <thumbsup> I had him loading his own mags the whole day, and loading into CMMG .22 mags sucks. He got that quick. He kinda liked loading 5.56 into the 20-rd Pmags, so I let him shoot the 14.5 gun - and he did well. Now, in the meantime, I'm on the 20" gun. I started at the 100yd target to confirm zero, and it's on. I go to the 200, 300, 400 - spent some time on holdovers on the 400 - then the 500 and 550. The kid is watching through the spotting scope... ;D I loaded up the only 40 rounds of Black Hills 77gr SMK that I had, and I transitioned to the 600yd target. I ripped that damn thing apart. Slayed it. Just using holdovers and not playing with scope adjustments, I hit over 30 of the 40 on steel. The kid was freaking out... :o He wanted on the 20" gun. I put him in there with some 68gr AMAX, and he was on the 100 and 200, but didn't hit the 300 at all. I told him to be patient, and he couldn't understand using holdovers for range. We went back last weekend... ;D

Jgun, from what it looks like right now, I'll be leaning more towards this one, the 300BLK over the x40WT cartridge. The barrel specs you mentioned are only one of the reasons. I need to wait and see what other companies come up with for barrels before I plunge right into that one, that's for sure. For suppressor use, I could load some subsonic x40WT, but even Wilson is directly telling people that if suppressed is primarily what you want, you're better off using the BLK cartridge over their x40WT. That's pretty cool, and very honest of them, right up front. What I'm probably going to do is build this up as a 300BLK rifle, get everything settled on it, and pick up a x40WT barrel down the road. Someone, somewhere will figure out the x40WT magazine issue, and it'll probably be an easy modification. I'd need to mock load up some actual ammo and play with magazines to try to figure it out on my own, find the restriction, figure out a mod for it - and I'm not sure if I'd want to commit to the reloading tools right away just to do that. Once it gets solved, I'll probably be in that. Now, for the bad news I found out for myself... the lower I wanted to use for this rifle build is already (only) marked Cal: 5.56mm. I'm screwed for using that lower... >:(

^^^ That's for a combat or defensive gun, and that's absolutely correct. Get it out of the way as fast as you can. Now, if your rifle is for hunting deer, and your primary optics get damaged, and you quickly need to get your backup sights deployed for your own safety... Then suspect Foul Play. <lmao>

Cam pin won't go in the bolt from the other side. Well, at least not on the AR-15. The hole is smaller on the other side of that thing. If the cam pin does go in there, that's not a mil-spec bolt, or it's already a lefty.

There are a few more rails out there now, but it's catching them in stock somewhere that might be the challenge. Troy, Daniel Defense (when you can find someone that's got the DPMS barrel nut in stock), SWS I think, and a few more. Just make sure you're searching for something that's DPMS compatible, because the Armalite compatible rails won't work on DPMS receiver threading. Length will be up to what you're looking for, really. The Troy MRF-308 rail is 13.8 inches long, and it will fully cover a short low profile gas block on a rifle-length gas system. Not quite sure on your 18" SASS barrel, but doesn't it use mid-length gas? Trigger: there are so many good ones out there, that it's hard to recommend. That might come down to "who has what on sale" at the time of your quest. Base and ring mounts: people don't watch this one enough: The Armalite one-piece scope mount. You can find that thing cheap all over the place, and they make it in 1" rings and 30mm rings. Before you make a choice, look at that one. Definitely use a one-piece mount, preferrable something that doesn't require tools to install/remove (once you get the scope mounted in the mount, that is). Bipod: GG&G. HD-XDS. You guys aren't serious, are you? Plastic guide rod comes stock?!!? I fired a Glock once, and I don't even remember what model or caliber it was - that bullpoopy trigger thing and my first round was enough to make me realize I'd never, ever want to shoot a Glock again. I'm definitely happy that you combined those two parts together on your upper build. I only know of one other gas block that's compatible with that barrel, for definite. Good parts combination. <thumbsup> And, welcome aboard... ;D Pardon my lack of information - Paladin Machine is the only other manufacturer that I know of that makes a compatible gas block for the DPMS SASS barrel. The Paladin Machine gas block is adjustable. Google the information on that company, and their SASS gas block, because it's hard to find right now.

I sure hope that Freedom Group is incapable of acquiring EITHER of those companies. I hope they can both resist. :-[

Same thing happens to me every time I visit Cabela's - ANY Cabela's... <lmao> I start browsing the ammo section with a handbasket, then realize that's stupid, and pick up the dry storage can. Then it's cans. Then it's cans in a push cart... Oh, I'm with ya on the rimfire, big time. I can take my kid out to the range on a weekend, and not even care if I blow through a 550 bulk pack with him. Having it set me back $22 is alot better than what I would have spent on 5.56... Great stuff for him to learn on. <thumbsup>

Something I learned a long time ago, from a very good Demo Instructor: "When you think you've got enough, add one more!..." <lmao> I've already got the BP Ten II (5", double stack, polymer lower), Desert Warrior (5" Bad Mofo single stack) and an Ultra RCP II (3", single stack, smoothed frame). Only thing I've been missing is a great 4" .45. This is how it always starts - rounding out a "group" of guns... <laughs> I stopped in a local gun shop this afternoon, just to check out their Kimber display case - it's looking thin these days. All I was really after was an answer to a question: What will it cost me for a Pro CDP II? Well, they didn't have one, and likely won't be getting one anytime soon. They told me that Kimber is about 60,000 guns behind right now - These are the same guys I bought my Desert Warrior from 4 years ago, and it took them two months to get that one for me back then. I trust their word. So, I looked at a few more that they had, and the Tac Pro II caught my eye.
