I've got "good days" and "bad days" - everything in the world revolves on what the projected activities are. My "really, really bad day" option is a Kimber BP Ten II with a spare 4-mag belt rig. I almost pulled the trigger on that sale - and a local guy is getting the rail for me for $235. For local, and a guy I've met, I forfeited the extra $3-something. ;D From my take on the Trading Post Supply guys - they sell more hunting gear than anything else, so they're making money elsewhere - Not confirmed, so I don't know why on the low price. I thought about the economics of it, myself needing a .936 gas block. If I bought the rail from them, with .750 lo-pro gas block included, I could trade away that gas block to someone else for something else I needed... Aaaand I went local. ;D Note of warning, if anyone is considering the Troy MRF-308 rail - SEARCH! Seriously. I saw that thing listed for almost $500 from some vendor, somewhere. The price variance is BS.... Look around, and buy low. Personally, I don't see a need to buy a DPMS or any other mag, when the Magpul LR-20s are out there at less than $20 each at several distributors. You won't find a better mag, IMHO. Look into those things.

This may end up getting moved to the Fulton Armory section - don't know. Fulton's not building it, but it'll end up being almost all Fulton parts when it's finished. The only things DPMS on it are the stripped lower and upper, and the LPK. I worked the stock DPMS trigger over with a Dremel polishing wheel and some jeweler's rouge - it's a hell of alot better than it was stock, and it beats paying someone for a trigger job, or maybe even buying a trigger. I don't have a trigger weight scale, but it's a definite improvement for a few minutes worth of work. I'll post up a separate thread on that, and I'll pull the trigger out for pics before the final buildup. I can't wait to get out and shoot this beasty - it's crushing me...

This was down at the bottom, in the "Sales and Coupons" section - Magpul PRS for $161: http://308forum.com/index.php?topic=121.0 For the rail on my DPMS build, I decided to use the Troy MRF-308 rail for a couple reasons. First was price for me, since this is a complete ground-up build. I didn't want to wait around forever, trying to justify a $400 rail to myself on a gun that's not gonna get beat like a combat gun. There are deals out there if you qualify for a .mil or LEO discount, but the expensive rails are still expensive. Second was the complete build condition. I didn't want to buy parts twice if I didn't need to, and that Troy rail comes with a DPMS-specific barrel nut. Good,since I didn't need to buy either a stock nut, or some other specific nut for another rail. This particular rail will work with your stock Armalite barrel nut, so you won't be out anything. At most retailers, it even comes with a .750" diameter low profile gas block to install. Cheapest place I found the complete rail assembly was Trading Post Supply, for $231.07. Big Brown Truck dropped off the bigger parts today: stripped upper, Fulton chromed BCG and the Fulton 18.5" SS medium weight barrel. I raided the scope from a bolt gun and put it in the Armalite mount, so it'll probably stay on this build now. Few more days of waiting on the rail, then it's small parts time. Here's how she's sitting now:

I did this to mine when I put the MIAD on there (and the AR-15s), but it was tough to find 4-40 set screws locally. I stepped up the size to 6-32 based on everything being available for that size. It's slightly larger than the commonly recommended stuff, but works like a charm. IMHO, the coarser thread pitch at 32 vice 40 is a little better, and cutting (tapping) the threads in the receiver leaves you with deeper threads on the 32 pitch, without a doubt. Anyone that wants to do this, but can't find 4-40 materials (set screws and tap), then keep in mind that 6-32 is a perfectly viable solution (and readily available at most ACE Hardware stores). You'll need the 6-32 set screws, the tap, and a #35 drill bit to size the hole properly for tapping. I hand-turned the drill bit in the tap holder - easy to do, and the material comes out cleanly on the receivers.

I think the hardest part to doing this will be determining barrel length and gas system specifics. The AR-15s have so many options available for short barrel lengths, and alot of people have it all figured out for smooth operation - pick the combo you want to put together, and someone knows the gas port size, buffer weight, all of it. Carbine gas system probably, but mid-length might be possible. Barrel length based off the gas system, and on preference. Not many buffer-weight choices out there, like the 15s (H, H2, H3, etc.), so you'd be stuck with the rifle or carbine length buffer. If it shoots soft (that's all "relative"), but cycles ammo, you'll be good. If it's kicking like a mule with whatever combo, then you're kinda stuck with only one option - gas hole sizing (experimentation) in the barrel. Someone's gotta have this figured out for an SBR combo, but I've never seen one running, in person.

Building an LR308, and am waiting on major parts right now. Should be about 3 weeks at the most before I can shoot it, so we'll see how this goes. Currently, the lower is 100% complete, but I'm waiting on all the upper parts right now (stripped upper, Fulton 18.5 SS MW barrel, Fulton BCG, and Troy rail). The stripped upper will probably beat everything else to the house, but the rail will be in on Friday or Monday. Fulton is literally up the road from me, so that stuff should be arriving pretty quickly. Here's the lower, as it sits - done: I put the Magpul MIAD on it yesterday, and immediately noticed the way the grip fit - little bit of an edge at the base of the grip, where it fits up to the DPMS LR trigger guard. That made today "Dremel Time..." I used a small grinding stone on low speed, and molded the bottom of the grip to fit a little better with the 308 platform - this pic looks a little ugly, but this was just a "progress pic;" I used some fine sandpaper on it to smooth it after this: Little bit of CLP after the fine sanding, and you can't even tell it wasn't made for this lower: More to follow, as the rest of the major parts show up...

I should have this rail on Friday afternoon, but it may be Monday before I get it. Either way, it'll get mounted up pretty quick. Hey everybody! Just arrived in NoVa in the fall; previously lived in Arizona for about 6 years (shooting heaven...). Retired military with much time on the pointy end of the stick, several "typical" ARs in 5.56, and currently completing a DPMS LR construction as an all-around shooter. Changed careers post-military, and I'm a certified Honda and Suzuki motorcycle mechanic now - I firmly believe that if you don't love your work, then that's what makes it "work" in the first place.
