Perils of traveling on Greyhound!

My daughter and her two boys came from Miami for Christmas and since it was quite a bit cheaper they decided to come by bus rather than fly. I've done the bus thing years a go and said never again, but what the hell do I know?

The trip out was uneventful but going back was a whole other ballgame for them. We put them on the bus here at 6:30 PM on the 1st. and when they got to El Paso they were informed that the roads were closed to Dallas and they would not be able to leave until the next morning. They were allowed to sleep on the bus though (Oh JOY!). The next day they were informed that the roads were still closed and they didn't know when they would leave. That evening they were told that they wouldn't be leaving until the NEXT morning, and no bus to sleep on. People were sleeping on the floors in the terminal and my daughter (who is 6 months pregnant) threw a fit. Besides her there were 2 other obviously pregnant women and and 80 year old lady stranded there. They couldn't leave (I had offered to go pick them up) because they didn't know when the roads would open. Greyhound then gave out vouchers for motel rooms (pay for the cab yourself). They finally got out on the morning of the 3rd.

They had long layovers in Dallas and Atlanta because of being off schedule and the buses being overbooked. In Tallahassee my daughter was trying to get info on when they could get out of there and the lady (I use that term loosely) at the ticket desk told my daughter she should just take her ass back to Mexico! My daughter is hispanic, both her mother and her biological father are Cuban, but she was born and raised in Texas and doesn't speak a lick of spanish. The consequence of that remark to her was that she was refunded the total cost of her and her sons' return tickets and the employee was fired on the spot and escorted to the door in front of everyone! My daughter says she's not taking the bus anymore! <lmao>

Oh to be a fly on the wall for that response!

Yup...pretty much forsook bus travel (except the future 308AR short bus).

One of my friends recently took the bus thinking the same thing...cheap!

When he got back he said "I wondered how the hell all the illegals were getting across the country. Now I know!"

OK. First of all.....why didn't you ask all of the brothers to help her out. Fuk! I would've paid the airline ticket just so she wouldn't have to deal with the whole "bus" thing. C'mon brother........all you gotta do is ask. Especially for family. We're here for YOU! AND your family. Just say the word Larry. You're good for it. Otherwise.......................we'll KICK your ass! <lmao>

I appreciate that guys, but she is a lot like me, if the money isn't there then it just don't happen. When her first husband got them on govt. assistance because he was too lazy to work she divorced his sorry ass and moved to Florida to get away from his drug dealing family. Same thing with the second husband. When she couldn't get him off his lazy ass to find a job she figured out that since she was already supporting the family if she got rid of him it would be one less mouth to feed and no loss of income! She isn't the brightest when it comes to picking life partners (I think she's getting wiser in that department) but she knows how to make an honest living. Her 20 year old son has a good job and helped with the traveling expenses too. It was a late decision to come to New Mexico for Christmas and they hadn't really set aside any money for the trip so it was a light budget this go around. Plus, there was actually three of them not counting the one in the oven, her, the 20 year old and her ten year old son.

I wish I could say any of my greyhound experiences were that uneventful. Actually, LA to Sacramento wasn't bad.....that is, until 3 minutes after I got off the bus in Sac. Every time I visit that neighborhood my sympathy for Mr. Robobot is revitalized.

The San Antonio greyhound station is probably the coolest LOOKING of the bunch but easily the worst I've ever been to. I've been through that station 4 times and each time something very bad happened. In direct contrast, the Baton Rogue greyhound station is the most ghetto looking place I've ever seen in my life but has been one of the most calm and uneventful greyhound stations I've ever been to.

The Tallahassee station was a funny experience. The day I left Florida we were passed up by racing cop cars on the way to the station. A few minutes after we arrived the news reported that; not far from the station some guy was given food different then he ordered at a fast food place, jumped up and punched the guy at the window and the guy at the window chased him down and they ended up fighting it out. If I recall correctly, the worker chasing the customer down initiated the car chase we saw on our way to the station. I guess I got lucky there because I was on my way to California within a half hour of checking in. I was basically there just long enough to see the news report and leave which is probably why I have few other memories of that pace. LOL
