First time at 300 yards

Ed, are people returning fire?  You getting shot at out there?  If not, then just relax, brother.  If it's not serious business out there, then don't make it serious business - it should be relaxing to go out and fire.

I did notice in your targets - DAMN!  the horizontal spread was nil, but there was vertical stringing.  That's most commonly from breathing.  Do you remember how you were breathing when you shot that set of rounds?

This pic below, your right target - at 300 yards, there's not much more than one inch in the horizontal distance between those shots.  Fucking impressive.  The vertical spread - breathing, most likely.  If you don't remember how you were breathing, then you don't have a pattern - that's my point.  Shoot on the exhale.  Breathe in, pause, breathe out, pause...  Fire.  Everytime.  <thumbsup>

This second picture the left target is my buddies and the right target is mine.

In short, you're thinking too much and reading too much.shooting should be fun. Loosen up and let the gun do its thing. Im gonna guess that you are muscling the rifle and trying to force it on to target. In doing so ur getting your heart rate up just on nerves alone and then u get to paying attn to that and then u try and ambush the target just to get a shot off.Take a step back, smoke/chew or whatever may calm u.walk back up to the rifle, get into a comfy position and be gentle.if prone load the bipod to your shoulder and you shouldnt even need to grip it much. If on bags, just enough pressure to keep it on ur shoulder. Just lay/sit there with out one in the chamber and see what u can do to control your sight picture. When you think u have it down then load a round and get back to that place. If it takes u 2 min between shots to feel comfortable again then so be it. Ive watches 50 guys take 5-7 min to take 3 to 5 shots but they group em like stacking quarters. Relax, have fun and try to outshoot you each trip, not some group u see on the Internet and set you expectations too high. You should leave happy that u did better each trip (although some days you will have an off day (like when tandem shooting with rob and u cant hit the broad side of a barn)) have fun. The rest will come in time.

You know, at the range I normally go to the targets are on the floor. At that range I totally felt I was muscling the rifle to get it where it needed to because of target in relation to the height of my bags and bipod. At the new range the targets were about 6 feet of the ground, which felt better with my rifles point of aim with either bags or bipod. So much more comfterable. I think I have a picture of my suppose qualification so I can go to the 300 got it on my first try. I will be going to that range from now on. Even though my groups at 300 are not the best I still felt very comfterable shooting it.

I will try to relax a bit more and wait a bit longer before shots. I think I just felt that way when I first got there with it being a new range and the excitement.

Thank you brother bubba for the info.

Originally my trip there was going to be strictly 100 yard shooting but we got excited and went to the 300. Was trying out a new powder imr4064 and I have to say I love this powder. Here is a picture of one of the groupings with it for the 150gn

What I used to "qualify" for the 300

Speaking of 9k .338's and Elite Iron....where the fcuk is Ron?

Still here. Just been working a lot.

he's afraid to admit how much he loves it...  <lmao>

Not at all my brother. That thing is damn sexy on the MRAD. Haven't gone shooting at all yet for the new calendar year. Been too busy. Plus, the range that I belong to is only a 100 yard range. And that's kind of a waste of time (and 5 dollar bills) for the MRAD. But trust me......you all will know the moment I play with that thing on a range.

What charge of 4064 were you using for those 150's ?

I don't have the balls to use Mikedaddy's recipe of 46.5gr so I'm still looking.

Not weird at all - the more magnification you have, the more movement you're going to see.  The greater the magnification, the easier it is to see how shaky you are.  Dial it down, things move less, and you get more comfortable on target.  When you see the target moving, at higher magnifications, most people have the tendency to "ambush" the target - jerk the shot right when the target is centered in the crosshairs, and not moving around.

My $0.02.

Great info brother,I always go high magnification for old eyes.Have a better understanding now.I do exactly that round and round then bang...fuk...Explain calling you'r shots..I always aim at the bull, but it doesn't always happen.I'm minute of man but chasing that ragged hole.
