I picked up a P308 POF from GotAmmo LLC on Friday.  My first "piston" gun!  They had pretty good deals on back packs and since the credit card was already hot...

Range report after my optics arrive:

Back from the range this morning!

Rifle:  16.5 inch P308.  Gen 4 upper, Gen 3 lower
The rifle was able to hold sub MOA at 100 yards.  The flier shot is common from what I’ve read on the web (1st round in a new magazine/cold barrel?).  POF Gen 4 is AWESOME!!!!  I went through 6 different types of ammunition in 5 different magazines with ZERO malfunctions.

  • E2:  https://www.pof-usa.com/esquared.html for more details.  Leaves the top tapered part of the brass dirty and you can see the machine marks in the spent casings.  Apparently it works, because my gun runs like a top!
  • Gas Piston:  I mentioned earlier that this is my first.  Talk about easy to clean!  I avoided Frog Lube on my impingement guns as I thought that I’d never be able to keep them clean without some sort of solvent or gun blast type of product.  This thing was CLEAN after ~150 rounds.  I wiped everything down, IPA’ed it, and Frog Lubbed it up for the next time!
  • Heat Sink:  POF installed a large heat sing in front of the barrel nut.  Comparing it to my other 308LR which has a bull barrel; this gun is much cooler.  My other gun requires cool time before putting it into the bag.  I was able to run through 10-15 rounds fairly quickly and the barrel was cool enough to touch.
  • Trigger:  I don’t know what it is, but it’s nice!  Short throw, I guess about 4-5lbs.

Scope:  Hawke Sidewinder 30 SF 6-24x56 SR Pro Reticle.  This is my second Hawkescope and I continue to like them.  Heck of a deal for a sub $500 scope.  Both of mine hold zero (300 Weatherby and this POF308), crystal clear glass, with some nice features for the money.  Good buy!

  • Locking Focus:  My favorite feature of the scope and it’s a simple no brainer.  Hawke uses a second locking nut on the focus lens to lock the damn thing in place after you get it where you want.  Really nice especially if you add rubber flip up caps.  LOVE THIS!!!
  • I like the SR Pro Reticle better than the MOA.  However, only the center section + illuminates on the SR in comparison to the entire reticle on the MOA.  I’ve only used the illumination when bore sighting at night, but I’m under the impression that I might like the MOA illumination better if/when I ever need to use it.
  • Push Lock windage/elevation knobs:  Another nice and simple feature.
