Has anybody used the Quickload software for pressure calculations/simulations with potential reloads? I have had a friend do some work ups for me in the past. Intriguing.

I know this is an old post without replies but what the hell...... Did you by chance follow up with Quickload? I am looking for something along this line myself.  I believe it could save me a lot of money in load development with my SAAMI and wildcat cartridges. With so many rifles, bullets and powders, it would be nice to cut cost on load development and also learn a bit more.

You know I haven't, though I thought of it today. I think I may have some overpressured rounds that might have caused my AR10 T extraction issues. Not quite sure yet. Although according to quickload they should be okay. My Hornady manual suggests they are right on the fence. 41 grains of RL15 behind a 175 BTHP.  Have to carefully shoot one or two and inspect the cases next time at the range. I may end up buying the soft ware, just not right now.

Quickload is one of those things that you don't know how you ever managed without it till you have used it for a while. It's amazing how slight variables can change a safe load to a dangerous load in a heartbeat. Case capacity comes to mind. I measure my bullets weight and length and my brass' case capacity and length, and enter these values instead of relying on the default info for a specific bullet/cartridge. You will acheive much more accurate results this way. I reload for 300 win mag and the difference in case capacity of the brass in that cartridge from brand to brand is FRIGHTENING! (from 88 grains H2o to 95.5!) So if you developed a hot load in the larger cases and jammed that same charge into the smaller one, you'd have a 13,000 psi difference according to QuickLoad! Needless to say, if you're anywhere near max, you'd have a very dangerous situation! I always measure my case capacity now when I get new brass and enter it in QuickLoad for safety/accuracy reasons. Another example would be a 308 win load vs 7.62x51mm NATO. With the NATO's thicker brass, loads can use up to 2 grains less powder to acheive the same pressure because of the smaller case capacity.

Another great thing about QL is barrel time. Using an OBT (optimal barrel time) table, you can find where the accuracy nodes are respective of barrel length with a given load! I came to this conclusion on my own working with QL. Then I came across all this! It's helped me get very close to some pretty accurate loads in both 300wm and 308 win!

Does take a little of the experimentation/shooting/fun out of it though!

I just got some 168 SMK's . According to my QL calculations, 41.6 Grains of AR-Comp will put me on an accuracy node for my 16" barrel. (.882mS barrel time)  This will be a hot load in my 54gn.   of H20 capacity Federal .308 brass. ( QL has Federal brass at 56 grains H2o so measure your case capacity!) Just under 62,000 psi. SAAMI max! I will, of course, work up to that to be safe. I'll post results!

Not cheap but if it avoids one gunsmith bill or damaged firearm, it's worth it. Had a guy on another forum used to run prospective loads on it for me, but he disappeared.

Sisco, if you provide me

1: case capacity in grains h20 (average)

2: bullet length/weight (average)

3: powder you want to use

4: barrel length (optional)

I will run some loads for ya. With barrel length info I can see how close you'll be to an accuracy node. Without true case capacity, it's a guesstimate, at best, as this can vary quite a bit. :)

Also, case length is another important variable. The more consice information we enter into QuickLoad the more accurate the results! Best to resize, trim, then plug the flashole and weigh the case capacity in grains of H2o.

I have used QuickLOAD software on and off; but it was missing some powder choices for me early on. I never took it too seriously; but did model loads with odd powders when I was curious. It did offer me some useful insight when trying to make blanks for the can cannon.

I found an alternative that appears to be reasonably well supported; and it's actually free. It has both Windows and Linux downloads available on the website; and I've even tested it to be fully functional (so far) running the Windows version on a Mac with WINE (which is also free).

Gordon's Reloading Tool; or GRThttps://www.grtools.de

I've seen quite a few positive anecdotes about GRT in other forums. I have personally yet to explore more than the basic features. But will absolutely be working up a few loads and comparing notes with the LabRadar and GRT software (and QuickLOAD where applicable). I'll post back when I have a better review/comparison myself; but figured I would throw it out here to see if anyone else has experience or opinions. Anyone that might have been on the fence about the $150 cost of QuickLOAD might care.
