308 carbine buffer system and what gas system to choose

Recommended Posts

So I purchased from Aero Precision their .308 carbine buffer system (Buffer tube, Buffer, Spring) My question is. How do I go about choosing a gas system for the .308 carbine length buffer system when it comes time to purchase a barrel? I have not seen any carbine length 16 inch barrels anywhere online, so would a 18 inch mid length gas system work with the buffer system I have? Please help because my build is at a stand still now.

Really doesn't matter man. Carbine length gas system 16" 308s tend to be over gassed a little, but on the plus side you won't have issues with weak ammo. Dont need to base your barrel choice on your buffer system.

Most people like mid gas for 16s and rifle gas on 18+. A few of us have gone to rifle length gas on 16" barrels with good results.

Ok so if I went with a mid length I shouldn't have any issues with it not firing properly or ejecting as long as everything else is functional,  just don't want to screw this up I already built An AR 15 with no problems, just concerned because AR10 is a whole new beast and I'm not that familiar with it yet

Hello all I just recently got into building ARs as a hobby I recently built and completed a successful AR 15 build which I am proud of. So now I have the itch and want to build another I'm looking forward to being in contact with everyone and I thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge with me to help future builds

ggI have a .308 carbine "receiver extension" my question really was if the gas system has to be the same buffer system which i believe I got the first answer from Blue109 which he stated it does not matter. However do you possibly have a different view on things

There is really no different view, your carbine extension will work with any length gas system. The caveat to that is the systems need a balance to function best. I have a 16 inch barrel with a rifle gas system and a carbine extension that functions great. I had to open up the gas port some so it would function with all types of ammo. When I got a suppressor it over gassed the system so I put an adjustable gas block on it. You can also "tune " the system with different buffer weights and different springs.

Spend a bunch of time with the search function here and you will find weeks worth of reading on the different parts of the system, what works and what doesn't.

Not all receiver extensions are created equal either. The A2 extension being the longest, the Vltor A5 and the Armalite AR-10 being the next longest, and the AR-15 being the shortest.

There are even shorter tubes, but I haven't seen one or heard of one that'll work on a .308.

The size and style of your buffer doesn't necessarily determine your gas system, but the two do effect each other and may require "tweaking". This is especially true with the .308. Generally this is done with buffer weights or controlling the gas flow in the system.

You can have any length barrel and gas combination you desire. Normally I like to put the longest possible gas system on a barrel. That gives me a rifle length gas system (DPMS and Armalite have different lengths) on a 16" barrel, a mid length gas system on a 12.5"-14.5" barrel, a carbine gas port on a +10.5" barrel, and pistol length gas on everything else.

Barrel length and gas length ratio will determine the size of the required gas port, to a max diameter of 0.125" (or 1/8").

For example, on my personal .308 rifle... I have a 17" barrel with a rifle length gas port, drilled to .099". I am using an entry length (carbine length without adjustment holes) extension with a carbine 10 oz. heavy buffer and a Tubb AR10 flat wire spring.
