Forgetful cops leaves rifle on trunk lid

The Seattle Police Department is apologizing for an assault rifle left unattended on the back of a patrol car Monday night, and has launched an investigation into the matter.

First published by The Stranger, Nick Gonzales snapped a picture last night of the menacing-looking rifle on the trunk of a Seattle Police car. It was around 9 p.m. and the car was parked outside the Roosevelt Hotel, near Pine and 7th Avenue, with no police officers in sight, said Gonzales.

In addition, after an officer got back into the patrol car, it was driven away with the rifle still on the trunk. A woman also saw the rifle and followed the car to try to get the officer's attention.

"Menacing looking rifle"? really? so do you think it had a sharks mouth painted on it like the p-40's of WW2? or something much more sinister? It amazes me the way people over react to the sight of a firearm. You want something to react to look at the national debt.....

I was going to say something similar bgc.  Menacing.  I wonder if people say that about the thugs selling drugs on the corner?  Or maybe when someone sees a muslim standing by an airport or train station?  "I saw a MENACING middle-eastern man by the airport today."

not going to go on the menacing rant, how about accountability? who fucking leaves their patrol rifle out like that? normally mounted inside the car or trunk, it is not as though they carry them out all the time. the rifle was deliberately taken out for something. i have a hard time believing that it was left behind by accident. this is a terrible blow to the credibility of the department and its training.

^^^  I concur - I could give a rat's ass how many granola-crunching politically correct dipshits in Seattle were offended or "harmed for life" by having to look at that.  I lived there for 12 years, and the best thing I liked to say to the tree huggers was "I love the spotted owl - they're GREAT with gravy!!!"

The accountability bothers the hell out of me.  The hippies can kiss my ass.

Well, in the Socialist Republic of Illinois, you'd be arrested (for "brandishing a firearm"), I'm sure the State directed "independent" new agencies would lambaste you endlessly, and there could even be the possibility of being tared and feathered.  Oh, and the State would use your neglegence as one more reason to publicly publish the FOID (Firearms Owners ID) car holders information.  They've wanted to make public record for years who has a FOID card (needed to own, purchase or posses a firearm or ammunition).  You know, so the criminals know who's house to burglarize to arm themselves.

I think that's what would happen if a private citizen did this in Illinois.

And I agree, what cop looks over at his empty rack on the dash and thinks nothing of it.  I remember a kid who "lost" his rifle at Benning in Infantry Basic.  We all did push ups with full packs for over an hour while he "thought about where it might be."  NO ONE lost anything after that.  My rifle never left my person unless I was handing it to the armorer.
