lilmidtown
Ok so the gun is an armalite ar10a . It took me awhile but I got the free float handgaurd low profile gas block and a new Magpul stock for it . Next thing I want is a new trigger . I was wondering what most of you rub as far as optics right now I have a red dot vortex strikefire with diamondhead back up sights I know I need a scope something reasonably priced with good eyes relief . Also any tips as far as upgrades . Up keep anything at all would be great I'm definitely trying to learn about the weapon more then anything m
Rsquared
I think the optics will mostly depend on what you plan on setting up the rifle for. You'll find all the fella's around here run damn near the entire spectrum of optics on all sorts of rifles. As an example, I use a Nightforce NXS on my 10B SASS, a Trijicon ACOG on one of my 10B carbines, an Elcan Spectre on my 10B SBR and straight irons on a 10B A2 carbine (my oldest). I use Troy flip-up backups on just about everything I have, just because I like some kind of redundancy. A bunch of Eotechs on a handful of AR-15 SBR's. Like I said. Pretty much for what you want the rifle to be able to do. Long range, medium range, short range, kick in the door. You name it. More than likely, someone around here either has or had one. Mines going to be used for hunting / shtf type gun I do plan on getting a bolt action .308 to hunt with once I have the funds to do so figured it would make sense instead of buying different types of ammo . Alot of people tell me it's dumb to just have a red dot on it because it's a long range rifle and I'd love to have a place to hit targets 400 yards out but I'm reduced to haviing a 100 yard range so I'm kind of conflicted
98Z5V
Max distance you'll normally shoot at, max distance you'd like to shoot to, max dollar limit you want to hit, and what you're shooting (paper or animals, and size of animals). Hit some answers for those, and it's easier for us to make recommendations.
unforgiven
You could add a red dot to the scope

I'll also use it for hunting whitetail maybe a black bear if it keeps trying to get into my chicken coop . And the money 300 or less but I'm willing to wait and save up a little more if I had to

98Z5V
Two recommendations, right off the bat, then. Both scopes are Primary Arms, but with different reticles. One is specifically for estimating range and hunting, but it can be used beyond hunting. The other one is specifically forestimating range, (more) rapid target engagement, holding for wind, holds for moving targets - and can also be used for hunting. Hunting: http://www.primaryarms.com/primary-arms-orion-4-14x44mm-riflescope-acss-orion-pa4-14xffp-orion Way more than hunting: http://www.primaryarms.com/primary-arms-4-14x44mm-riflescope-acss-hud-dmr-308-223-reticle-pa4-14xffp308

The magnifiers don't change the zero at all. I prefer my 1-6x scopes but magnifiers have their place.

Only your red dot would have the zero. If the red dot holds true, then you're good. The Vortex you have will hold zero.
