TPO Posted October 30, 2021 Report Posted October 30, 2021 Hi Ya'll. I am new to this forum. Please excuse me for not having some of the past info. in this forum. I want to build a .308 AR. I have the lower and now I need a completely assembled upper. I want it to be in .308 for various reasons. I would like a SS barrel at least 20" in length, a left handed configuration, and as accurate as possible. I have researched Stag, Aero, Baer, Wilson and PSA. I have not spoken with any of these. From what I can gather Baer and Wilson do not offer .308 uppers. For the others I have no idea about accuracy. Shillen does not offer an a LH upper. Krieger is very expensive and you must use one of their BCG's. I don't know if they offer a LH version. Any help you guys can offer will be appreciated.
Armed Eye Doc Posted October 30, 2021 Report Posted October 30, 2021 Welcome to the forum. The most important question for you to answer before any info can given... What lower do you have? There are many manufacturers that do not work together either because they are a different pattern (DPMS vs. Armalite vs. RRA) or they have proprietary parts that make them difficult to fit with other manufacturers.
TPO Posted October 30, 2021 Author Report Posted October 30, 2021 Thanks for the heads up Armed Eye Doc! I have an Aero M5 lower. I see from your profile you are in TX. So am I. I am also a radiology doc (retired). I am also armed. Nice to meet you in the forum. TPO

shooterrex Posted October 30, 2021 Report Posted October 30, 2021 Stag Arms makes left handed 308's. They also sell receivers etc so you can build one. From what I read on their pages you can't use an Aero lower.

Sisco Posted November 1, 2021 Report Posted November 1, 2021 Being left handed, my question is: Why get a left hand upper? It is not really necessary. Outfit your 308 AR with an ambidextrous safety and maybe an ambidextrous magazine release and you will find a standard right side ejection upper will work just fine. Then get an Aero upper and save yourself fitment problems.
Armed Eye Doc Posted November 1, 2021 Report Posted November 1, 2021 That is great left hand experience @Sisco. @TPO listen this man. He knows his stuff. Where about in Texas are you? I am south of DFW a little bit.
TPO Posted November 19, 2021 Author Report Posted November 19, 2021 Thank you for all the info. I did abandon my search for a LH .308. I went with Aero RH BCG, lower and upper. I just am waiting for the stock. Since I wanted a very accurate rifle I ordered a Shillen 24" 1/10 twist barrel. It was not cheap ($606.00 total) but I got it within 1 week and I believe it will have the best chance to be very accurate. Krieger also offers an AR 308 barrel but it starts at about $800.00 and Krieger delivery times, at least for benchrest barrels, is pretty long. I will let you know how it turns out in the future. BTW I am just North of Austin in Georgetown, TX.
Armed Eye Doc Posted November 19, 2021 Report Posted November 19, 2021 Shilen is about 15 miles north of me. I have a 20in Shilen barrel that is waiting for me to put the rifle together. I got it at their annual swap meet in May. If you are close, or can make it for the event, it is worth going. I got my barrel for about $250 off due to an oversized gas port. An adjustable gas block will fix that.

If all AR15s were left handed and that’s all you righties had to use you would not be saying these things so Willy nilly and would be demanding the firearm be redesigned and calling it junk.
