DevilDoc
Hello Everyone,I'm new to the forum. I recently retired from the military, and am in the planning stages of moving to the bush of Alaska. I admit I have been bitten by the bug to build an AR. I plan on doing both the AR-15 and AR-10. I hope I'm not opening a can of worms here, but this is a sincere question. I see alot of statements, but no true explanations of what the reason is. I consistently see people offended it seems, when a .308 DPMS is called an AR-10. Why do they say that it isn't an AR-10 if a DPMS lower is used? I'm sorry if I released the hounds with this question lol! Thank you for your time!God Bless,Jeff
imschur
AR-10 is a model designation of an Armalite rifle. So the only AR-10 is an Armalite. Refering to all 308 AR's as AR-10's is incorrect DPMS "LR-308"KAC "SR-25"RRA "LAR 308"Larue "OBR"Armalite "AR-10"Think Ford Corvette
imschur
additionally refering to them incorectly complicates conversations about parts compatabilities. There is not standard among the 308'sAlso think of it this way you can have a Remington 700 and a Winchester Model 70 both chambered in the same caliber. While they look similar they are two different beasts.
DevilDoc
Thank you for the quick response. I understood that, but, for instance, when people would mention a Noveske lower with an unnamed upper, they called it an AR-10. It just seems when ever DPMS is brought up by someone with a question, AR-10 is taboo. I have even seen someone say that a rifle with a DPMS lower is not an AR-10, it's a .308. I just thought it might be some kind of design thing, besides the all encompassing Armalite trademark issue.

Rsquared
Noveske equipment will interchange with Armalite upper/lowers and vice versa. Technically, Noveske calls thier AR the N6. And, they make some pretty nice stuff......of course I'm kinda biased....I've been drooling over the 12" Leonidas upper assembly for one of my Armalite lowers (I'm also a big Armalite fan).Pretty much, it's the two different platforms representing 7.62 (308) in the AR world. Armalite and Noveske.....and then all the others....LWRC, POF, DPMS, KAC, blah, blah, blah (I think everybody gets it).Welcome aboard Doc.Ron
Jgun
Although, there seems to be a great deal of brand loyalty among the Armalite crowd, there are certain differences to consider when building a gun vs buying one from a company like Armalite, Noveske, DPMS etc. There are certain things you might want to research before deciding on one over the other. As Imschur stated, there is no mil spec for the .308 AR rifle, which confuses things when you decide to build your own. Fortunately, you've come to the right place to have any component compatibility questions answered. One thing that sometimes is the deciding factor for builders is the magazine issue. If you decide on an Armalite pattern rifle, you will have to use Armalite type magazines. If you wish to utilize Magpul mags for your .308 You'll want to build an SR 25/DPMS pattern gun. edgecrusher
additionally unless you've located the leonidas, you're s.o.l., noveske does not sell them anymore.
DevilDoc
additionally unless you've located the leonidas, you're s.o.l., noveske does not sell them anymore. They don't sell what anymore? A fully assembled .308, or lowers and uppers? Thank you everyone for the great advice, I appreciate it! Though that Leonidas is a pretty weapon, I'm still suffering from sticker shock :o
edgecrusher
upon further investigating, i'm wrong. there was a period when i actually contacted them they weren't making them, maybe only temporary, but i was under the impression they gave up on it. they are nice, all their products are, but yes, very expensive. i bought an obr from larue, which are compatible with armalite ar 10 uppers and noveske uppers, but i don't think either could compare to my larue
Rsquared
Though that Leonidas is a pretty weapon, I'm still suffering from sticker shock :oYou'll get past that eventually. As with anything in the 308 world, Ya gotta pay to play.....and space purchases out. Hell...just the barrels for those things are 500 bucks. But who doesn't like a little 308 fire breathing monster? Rsquared
My thoughts exactly. That's why I'm in the process of getting one of my lowers registered with "THE MAN" as an SBR. Once that's done....leonidas barrel...low-profile adjustable gas block...12" handguard so the AAC brake will hang just barely out of the end of it...and the suppressor on the end of it.How could that not be interpreted as a good time?
