Jgun
this is definitely one of the worst gun explosions I've seen. It's a miricle that the shooter wasn't seriously injured. www.thegunzone.com/m1akb.html

Jgun
Sounds like the gun had a defective barrel. Hoping to get a Garand this year myself. One of the few semi autos not considered an assault weapon by the idiots in NYS.(yet)
survivalshop
The report was very interesting . Who knows where or who made Springfield barrels that they used in this & other rifles. I have had a few SA MiA's & loved them all .
Jgun
It says that the barrel had no markings of any kind. I had thought that Springfield marked their barrels. Do you have any memory of your M1A barrels being marked or bare?
Rsquared
Hoping to get a Garand this year myself. One of the few semi autos not considered an assault weapon by the idiots in NYS.(yet) Not an assault weapon. Hmmmmm Tell that to the Germans who tried to defend against the Normandy invasion. They might have a slightly different opinion. Yep.......definitely not an assault weapon.

Tripledeuce
This is very interesting!!!! This same thing occured at the origional Springfield Arsenal, during ww1. Major General Julian Hatcher wrote about it in his book," Hatchers Notebook". The 1903 Springfield bbls were heated , so one end could be :bumped" up in size, to create the larger end to thread and chamber. After a couple of bbls burst, the arsnel ran tests, and found the same thing. The bbls had been heated to to high a temp, and kept there to long. They recalled all the bbls, and destroyed them. My first impression, upon looking at the pics was that the bbl had burst, but then, I have read Hatchers book several times. I wonder how many of todays "Experts" have? History DOES repete itself!LOL!! Respectfully Terry
Jgun
I think the lesson here is that if you buy a gun (or component) and you don't know the history, even if it is marked, you are running a risk. I had never given that much thought to the safety of no name barrels before, only reason I avoided them was due to accuracy concerns, but in the future I will be giving a little more thought to the subject. The same thing applys to buying ammo, I guess we take a lot for granted when someone asks us if we'd like to try their "new build". And keep that under your hat about the effectiveness of the Garand as a fighting weapon, we don't want to give the fools any more idea's, since we know, they can't think of anything on their own. Yeah, they're just sentimental old WWII relics that we keep around for the nostalgia... nothing else.... ;)
