Atakachafa
Every year two friends and myself deer hunt together. We mainly Whitetail hunt but we usually throw a Muley in there as well. Our firearms are as follows...their names are changed for their privacy. Myself: R25 .308 Suppressed SBR 300 Blackout Custom .408 CheyTac Ben: Standard AR15 Custom 338 Lapua Scott: 65 Grendel Custom 338 R.U.M. When we bump into fellow deer hunters they often have something rude to say usually involving the word "overkill," like we see a deer and empty the mag Rambo style. On the same note they drool over our bolt guns... is it me or would it at least be more acceptable to scoff at the big bores? So my question is; Does anyone else run into when hunting with an auto-loader or is it just our neck of the woods?
planeflyer21
It is the "Zumbo" attitude that permeates certain hunting cultures…remember how well that turned out for him? Here in Arizona, most are very receptive to hunting with autoloaders, especially those with standard capacity magazines of 20 or 30 rounds (law changed this year from 5 round limit) for those hunting in "high human and drug trafficking areas", i.e., the whole southern half of the state. IMO the same sort of "You're A Non-Sporting Imbecile" attitude is pervasive with trap and skeet shooters also. (actually the trap guys seem to look down on the skeet shooters with more snobbery) Show up with a nice Beretta O/U and you are in the club. Show up with a pump or semi-auto and you are a clueless sap.
Atakachafa
Wow, as long as I have been hunting here we have had a 5 round limit... I don't mind that until a group of coyotes show up... then I start with the harsh words haha. As far as the brand names go I fully understand, I show up with my 870 and I'm treated like a weekend warrior, show up with the SBE 2 and all of a sudden I'm one of the guys...That being said I do talk down to my friends with the .556 and the 65 Grendel, all in fun. Magwa
I hunt with a LR308 and I have killed elk and deer most people I run into have that OMG face when they see my rifle, and it leads to some heated arguments BUT i use the truth on them I say well lets see now your gun is based on a mauser or a infield and you just have to understand what is the next military rifle that will be intergrated into the hunting world? yep I say AR15 it has been in the military for over 50 years and the one I am carrying although not a original is based on the gun that was made before the M16... after that they go well that is true and they say it just looks wierd in the woods. I then tell them it does not rust, is easy to carry, easy to load and unload, and there are more accesories than you could ever use so you can make it just how you want it, I also tell them no wood to swell up in the rain and snow, by then they are like yeah wow I never thought of all that maybe I will have to get one..... :)

I usually go with the argument of, "Our guns hold the same amount of ammo(In my state during deer season) the only difference is you work a bolt while I do not. Would you be upset if a single shot guy gave you grief about your bolt gun or lever gun? I personally find autoloaders to be more ethical. I am ashamed to admit that last year I made a VERY bad hit on a Whitetail doe, I broke the shot, saw the impact, made my correction and made a perfect second hit dispatching her on impact. I feel that would have almost certainly gone the other way had I had to manipulate a bolt. Edited November 5, 2013 by Atakachafa

I think a lot of the stigma comes from the feeling that carrying a semi auto through the woods will somehow propogate the anti-gun/anti-hunting sentiment that we are all running around with high-cap mags mowing down helpless animals in full-auto mode. I have had this discussion with my own brother, about ARs and hunting. My stipulation was that I'd let him ban my AR when he'd let me ban his semi auto Browning BAR or Remington 742. When he came back with the "Mine aren't assault rifles..." I told him to look up the history of the BAR and get back to me on that. I've heard nothing since. Atakachafa
338 lapua and ar 15?!? Wound them with one vaporize them with the other ?!? HAHA no, his .556 is for 100m and closer, and though I don't fee its the best deer round but to his credit he has never had a deer run more than 50m after being hit. Our large cal. rifles are for +800m on Muleys.

I actually prefer to hunt public, I like to fluff ego when I pull a nice buck or several deer out of public ground. The key is to go where nobody thinks the deer would ever be. As I am new here and cant seem to find some rules as my comp is being dumb, would hunting pictures be a bad idea? Id love an "AR Hunting" thread! My buddy still tells him "man that deer is out there aways, wanna use the AR so it doesn't run too far"

I'll stick with my .308 and 30-
Magwa
Living in the west I have seen it all in the 80's before wolves we had so many elk our season was 10 days bulls only then 3 weeks of either sex elk . During that time and since I have seen people use every caliber except a AR 15 5.56 on elk and I have seen all of them wound, cripple, it is not the caliber so much as it is bullet construction and most important bullet placement. I have killed over 35 elk and I have lost only 3 in almost 40 years of hunting them in two of the cases it was bullet construction and the other just plain a bad shot... most all of my elk have been killed with a 270 with 130 grain bullets. I have killed them at 20 yards and 600 with the same bullet and gun and most never moved over 20 yards after being shot. Train train train. practice under the same conditions you will hunt ,know your rifle no matter what caliber it is and learn the anatomy of your game these things will breed success. If you own and hunt with a gun you can not handle you are bound to fail , if the recoil bothers you you will not practice.. so outfit yourself accordingly. and Atakachafa very nice buck.. seasprite
My latest buck! Very nice buck I hope to see one here in 2 weeks when our season opens. Went out this past Sat. and sat up the deer stand along with a game camera so this Sat. or Sun. I'll go and pick up the camera and see what penitential freezer candidates I'll have.
