  1. No matter what is said by politicians or the news media , this is pure & simple " a terrorist act " . He most definitely terrorized those people , why not call it what it is ? Why because he is the boy next door , BS. Its because they won't be able to use it in the way they want to , is why. His purchasing of the firearms , ammo & what ever he used to make the IED's , for an illegal purpose, made him a felon criminal right off the get go . It took a lot of time to set up for this act & no one noticed ! There's a trail of some sort on this guy & we may never know , because they will suppress it. Maybe a Doctor he was seeing or some one probably knew he was capable of this . Its always the shy & loners who do these things or are they ? So many questions & so little answers. Makes ya kinda wonder how these people stay off the radar.
  2. Well , if your one of those conspiracy theorist, they are doing experiments on young collage students & using a phone call or some other subliminal message to set them off . Like the movie with Charles Bronson , "Telefon", not as far fetched as you would think . With the economy in a shambles & no prospective work for anyone out of collage , stress & probably a history of mental illness , be it known or not , is what sets these people off the deep end . No amount of gun control will ever stop some one from doing some thing like this , if they set there mind to it , but get ready for the on slot of gun control ! What really bothers me is , some one knew he was going off the deep end . His mothers statement that they had the right guy , is proof of that , if its a true statement.
  3. I have two 308's with them & the 20 " is a tac driver , the 16" only sports MBUS & shoots just fine with iron sights.( well plastic of some sort) So the cartridge is feeding ,but the bolt is denting the next cartridge as it passing over it ?
  4. If you get to the brass's pressure threshold ,with a powder charge , it won't take much of a temp change to show pressure signs with just about any powder out there. I have an magazine , that talks about this powder , but its at work ,but will look it up & the Arthur was loading for 5.56 & 308 & I will have to read it again ,because I don't remember if he said it was temp sensitive or not . Some powders can be real picky about temps .
  5. I like that one .
  6. Use barrel blocks for muzzle device removal or install.
  7. Send the bolt back with the barrel , because it is probably as you said , a bolt issue & the bolt can be addressed.
  8. Whats a good bi pod , light weight & not too cheap or too expensive. The bi pod I have on my 20 " HB is great , but kinda large & weighty , I picked it out to fit the target rifle type . I want to put a bi pod on this 24" ,5.56 , I'm setting up for Coyote hunting in Ohio this year, but I would like something simpler, lighter . I'm not a big user of bi pods as you can tell , but am seeing some specialized uses for them now a days . I picked up a 4" rail to mount on the bottom of my FF hand guard , this hand guard has no provisions for mounting , I will have to align , drill & tap the holes . I know a lot use Harris , I have seen them ,but never played with one , guess its time to start.
  9. If the bolt carrier is feeding a round onto the feed ramp , instead of the bolt pushing it up ,(which happens for several reasons, none good ), the live round will be pined onto the feed ramp/chamber area , it will leave some real nice dents into the case. I have pulled the bullets from the ones I was getting from trying P-mags in my CMMG 308 build ( mag related feeding issue ), resized them with out a depriming stem , reloaded them & the dents fired out . Reasons have already been stated , Mag related problems ( as above ), BCG not stroking all the way ( not stroking back far enough & BCG stopping short ,but enough for the bolt carrier to engage the live round , too short of a feeding cycle or in some cases , extreeme BCG travel , bolt bounce . Wrong components or miss matched .
  10. Did you use a 308 specific bolt catch ? What buffer & spring do you have in there & are you sure its for a 308. Sounds like the bolt catch is catching on the bolt carrier & not the bolt . BCG may not be going far enough into the receiver extension . Some thing hanging it up or wrong parts , maybe ?
  11. 308 upper parts are 308 specific , the dust cover is longer & the charging handle. You can use AR 15 trigger groups in the lower, but the pivot & disassembly pins are 308 specific. Buffers & springs are 308 specific , but some AR 15 heavy buffers can be used on a culpable stock configuration. Rifle receiver extension will need 308 specific buffer & spring. As far as the barrel is concerned & range , it all depends on the Barrel ( manufacturer ), ammo , GLASS ( scope ) & of course , the shooter , on what you can hit & how far . As far as what a 16" barrel can do @ 1000 yrds , I would not want to be down there to find out .
  12. I was going to say, DPMS mags are all marked as such on the floor plate . Glad ya got her running, too bad that CMMG is not with it .
  13. The shape is not extreme & shouldn't matter. There's more to this than we are hearing .
  14. Could have been shot out of a belt fed weapon & they will show some funny marks .
  15. Yep, Remington is soft & may not get the high reload count ,but I have been finding some of my best groups have been with it , go figure . Not sure I like the small primer idea.
  16. Tried the Honady's out & I need a real trigger in this old war horse , this std trigger is $hit . I gave the barrel a good cleaning with Hoppes copper solvent this weekend & it took for ever to get the patch clean . I didn't realize the bbl. had so much copper fouling . I went to the range today to test fire a customers rifle & took some of the new hand loads for this 5.56 & a funny thing happened , for a rifle that was some what sighted in, at least an inch out of the bull , the rifle shot 5 1/2 " to the left . No dropping of the rifle or changing anything , except a good cleaning. I think that copper fouling was doing things to this barrel & yes , this was the first time I used the Hoppes copper solvent on this barrel & glad I did , because after adj. the scope , rifle was very consistent , but my trigger is not . The 52 gr. SMK's still shined ,but the Hornady 55 gr. FMJ's shot a lot better than the Armsco bullets & I will be going back to my org. COL.. No Chrono today , it was 97 degree's out there & I was all by my self at the range. I'm not going to shoot this rifle till I get a real trigger in her .
  17. Size one & see if it straightens out . Reload & they will fire form to your chamber after a trigger pull , but I would size it first & look it over real good .
  18. So , you are saying that the round fed from a locked back bolt ? If that worked , whats wrong ? Was the Smith short stroking the action trying to watch it feed or is the BCG not coming back far enough to grab the cartridge with the charging handle pulled all the way back ? If thats the case , may be some thing in the charging handle or its configuration or some thing not letting it go all the way back far enough. :wwop:
  19. Ya know, that mag has got to go pink . Doesn't look right hanging there with out some color .
  20. All loading data & field notes should be well documented. It gives you some thing to go back to, if need be . You should see some of my notes , ( too hot , way too hot , good load , add more powder ) <laughs>
  21. I just loaded some Hornady 55 FMJ's & a bunch of the 52 gr. SMK's . The 55 FMJ's I added 0.4 gr's. , to 24.4 gr's of powder & shortened the COL to 2.225 "( just a test , I like to keep COL as long as possible , for mag feed & this is going the wrong way ,but still in the crimp grove ) , why I went that way is just a hunch , but I should have no problem with the 55's in this 1-10 twist bbl. ,but ya never know.., it is 24 " long & 1-10. It was the first time I chrono'ed a 5.56/.223 & the SMK 's didn't give me any surprises , even @ almost twenty years young . The 55 FMJ's did surprise me though , they were on the most part , all over the place velocity wise. & one thing I'm glad of & also surprised me , is the Vol. of a developed round with out the use of a Chrono . 98 I believe the 70 gr. is not recommended for my twist rate , but since its dogs I'm going to hunt ( no not the type you take home to momma ) , there 53 gr. TSX or TTSX is what I'm going to try out first . I also may give some of the ammo to a guy's son at work for his first deer hunt & he's using a single shot .223 , with 1-12 twist ,for it. My shots , if any , will be under 200 yrds..
  22. I would assume its a DPMS bbl. nut , but I would contact CMMG to make sure , it may be std AR15 , not sure & ya never know .
  23. If the gas port on the bbl. is too big , you will definitely have more of a violent action response . The adj. gas block should be able to address that . I would not worry about what the brass is hitting as long as it gets out of the way of the next round to be fed or on what the brass is doing or what it may be hitting on the way out . This rifle needs a higher round count before you start diagnosing for some thing that may or may not be a problem . With the adj. gas block , you will be able to tune the rifle to the ammo or a range of ammo types ,or for a collapsible stock configuration . I don't think I have ever weighed the difference between the two stock configurations , any one know ? Now this is what I would do & its just me , that I'm talking about , I would get another barrel , install it , send them there's back , for a refund for the price of the barrel . They did say the screwed up & if you have it in writing ( or not ), well , they have little to say because they admitted they screwed up . Money back ( no matter what they give up )would go toward the price of any barrel you get & you will probably have a better barrel ,too boot . The adj. gas block will help also , maybe with less fuss & $$$$.
  24. So , you are saying you never broke or bent a Mil spec one ? There is more to bending one or breaking one than the way they are made & also who made it . I have been around AR's for over thirty years & have never seen a broken or bent one . Not that it can't be done ( your an animal 98 <laughs>) As said I also prefer the mil spec , if for any reason, they seem to fit the lower receiver threads better.
