I'll be interested to hear your what your impression is of the 300, as compared to the 5.56.
-
Looks beautiful Drew! What brand and length barrel did you go with? I'm definitely jealous of that suppressor, can't wait to hear how it shoots, both with and without the can. Have you even had a chance to try the 300BLK rd in any gun yet?
-
That is VERY good news. As someone said above, I think you must have some good energy working there, what better time to win it. I still think you'd be smart to hold on to it and wait till you back to work before starting any new builds.

Tactical Machining question - Pic's are up
Jgun replied to Lon Moer's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
I certainly like the idea of these pins and springs being held in place with set screws. makes it easier to take them apart without having springs disappearing under the bench. I've never much liked dealing with the installation and removal of roll pins in the aluminum AR receivers. Of course, this is another instance where there is no standard for the pins, so you pretty much have to learn what each MFG decided to use, and if you own a number of guns from different MFG's you need to have several different parts kits on hand if you want spares for each of your guns. -
Your story sounds just like my own when I first became involved with the .308 AR platform. I mistakenly thought that the large platform guns were just scaled up versions of the small platform guns. So, to begun your education (no insult intended) The large platform AR's have no mil spec, so, the different manufacturer's have pretty much done whatever they wanted when developing their products. Two types predominate. They are, the Armalite, and the DPMS/Knights SR25 types. Some parts interchange between the two, some do not. Uppers and lowers do not interchange between the two. Most agree that the bolts and barrel extensions do not. Now, to muddy the waters further, ther are several companies that make their own proprietary guns that share even less parts than the above mentioned. From personal experience, I will tell you that the POF lower (very nice receiver) was not designed to fit any other manufacturers upper. You can mate a DPMS upper to it, but ideally you would need to make bushings to reduce the ID's of the DPMS pivot and take down pin holes from .277" to the POF's proprietary .250" pin size. In my opinion, if you are trying to make a match quality rifle, you would be better served by starting with a matches upper and lower set from a reputable comapny. I, personally, am very impressed with the Mega Arms MA TEN sets, which you can get from the group buy on this forum. If You'd care to go into this in greater depth, feel free to PM me about it, and I'll be happy to share my experience trying to put together a POF lowered DPMS uppered .308 AR.

All of my present .308 AR's have collapsible butt stocks, (CTR, Ace hammer etc.). Is it possible to put a spacer into the PRS so that I can have complete redundancy between all of my rifles? What about the UBR? I'm thinking that my next large platform AR will be intended more for accuracy than light weight/portability, and was planning on the PRS, but would opt for the UBR if it made things easier for me as far as buffers and springs. I've used Slashes buffers and springs exclusively in my big AR's and would prefer not to have to start keeping track of what setup I have in which gun.

I have never lapped any of the AR's that I've built, but have been recently told that it's very common for the face to be out of square, which would (I think) be likely to cause uneven bolt lug engagement. I wonder why the receiver manufacturers don't pay close attention to this? I'm not planning to start taking my assembled, functioning AR's apart to check them on this, but I may consider making one of these for my next AR build. Since I've never used one before, maybe those that have used the AR 15 ones could answer a question for me? The tool itself looks to be fairly simple, with a close fit in the bolt carrier bore and barrel extension bore, being, I would think, important. What I'm wondering about is if the part of the tool that actually rotates and does the lapping would need to be hardened so that it doesn't wear at the same time that it's lapping the hardcoat off the front of the receiver? Anyone care to comment?

Saw this yesterday and thought it might be of use to some members. http://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com/render?llr=78b9fycab&v=001JO9rJ3gjxX6fgX1ibKZTdLz0tNXdicvyhpcvy_MnVRCf7QR2CfS3ey54wJ7Ghgv4zcPMoeG7xpijUhoTFjZWR_YheBfOr7p1n-IhQgtNkgE%3D

From what I hear the Atlas bipods are very popular, along with a mono pod mounted to one of those larue butt stock adapters. Some prefer a shooting bag for the butt stock. I'm presently setting up a gun for bench shooting and have picked up a Versa Pod bipod for it. I'll be trying both setups for the butt stock, but that will be months from now.

Those .308 lowers look very nice. Can't wait to see some finished guns made by members using them.

I built a MA TEN carbine using a Noveske barrel, Armalite BCG, DPMS bolt catch, ATC SR Gold trigger, CAR X heavy buffer and spring, AR 15 colapsing stock, and the rest AR 15 small parts, (selector, springs, detents, etc). I've had no compatability issues. As mentioned above, I'm not aware of compatability issues with DPMS lower parts and the Armalite BCG. Although I seem to recall a member posting about having an interference issue with the hammer clearing the bottom of the Armalite BC, unfortunately I don't recall what hammer he was using, (maybe DPMS?)

From an esthetic point of view, I think the picture of it with the windowed release levers looks 10X better than then the picture of it with the solid levers compared to the other CH's. Hope they will be offering it that way.

LR-308B SASS BARREL THREADING FOR MUZZLE BRAKE
Jgun replied to RUTGERS95's topic in Building a .308AR
I picked one up for a build, based on hearing some good reviews of it's performance, but never installed it because it felt a little on the heavy side to me. I ended up using a BABC on that gun, which is definitely lighter, and I feel that it's effective in recoil reduction. I never tested the Titan, but at less than half the price of the BABC it might not be a bad choice, if the extra weight at the end of the barrel doesn't concern you. -
First off, don't know what your problem was that kept you from shooting since 2010, but I can just imagine how good it must have felt to get back to it, congrats. I have been scaling back my shooting since the fall, for many reasons, finances being among them, and I'm feeling the lack, really missing it. I may be out of my relm here, but I've got a bunch of revolvers (don't reload for any of them) but I find that, because of their unique grip configurations compared to the 1911 type guns that just point naturally to me, I really need to practice with a revolver in order to shoot it well, especially the SA's. I've got a Freedom Arms model 83 and I know it's accurate, but unless I shoot it often, I don't get consistant offhand groups.

LR-308B SASS BARREL THREADING FOR MUZZLE BRAKE
Jgun replied to RUTGERS95's topic in Building a .308AR
What's the outside diameter of the SASS? Isn't it threded from the factory? -
Last Bravo large handle CH I bought cost me $50 I think. I'd be willing to pay an extra $10 for an ambi if it was a well executed, good design. I may try one on my next build, just to see if I like the ergonomics.
-
Based on the quality of their scopes, I would expect the mounts to be of high quality also. I think that if you have a need for the 20 MOA angle for really long range stuff, they might be just the ticket, so you wouldn't need an intermediate 20 MOA riser between your AR flat top and a standard mount from BOBRO, Larue, or AD, etc.
-
Thats my understanding also, which means that it has a larger cartridge base dia., which I'm assuming also means that it would require a different bolt , and maybe a different barrel extension. It might take a Pmag, but I'm guessing that it would become a single stack. That's why I was asking the OP. As previously stated, I didn't know that the .308 platform AR's could be "stretched" to accomodate 300WSM.
-
Can you confirm for me that the 300WSM uses a larger dia. case than the .308 and other cartridges based on it? If so can you tell me what bolt and carrier your using? Also, who makes the barrel extension that your using? Do you handle the extra gas impulse of the WSM by reducing the gas port dia in the barrel? What about magazines? which do you use, and how many rds do they hold? I wasn't aware that the 300WSM was a viable option in the .308 platform AR's. I thought that the .338 Federal was considered the max.

Hope you don't think that was my intention when I mentioned the stock, but since you've opened the door, LOL..... I, also think that they're beautiful stocks, and am hoping it will help in my pursuit of accuracy in the M1A platform. If I get mine before you go for one, I'll post my opinion on it, If you get one first, please do the same. I think the wood stocks look really beautiful, but I also think that there are some options out there these days that are functionally better. I keep hearing that the JAE's are really heavy, so if that's an issue to you with the Scout, you may want to c/o some of the other stocks. I might recommend the Blackfeather aluminum chassis stock. It looks to me as though the aftermarket for the M1A is starting to take off. Although I don't think it will ever match the AR's popularity, I do think that it's getting to the point where you can build them amost any way you want, from 16"-22", and these aftermarket stocks are helping with the optic mounting problems associated with the platform.

I think that when you decide to purchase something that is custom made to your specs, you should understand going in, that it may take longer than the manufacturer initially estimates for it to be made, it's just the nature of custom work. As long as the company is reputable things uually work out OK in the end. It's just frustrating when your told that your part will be finished by a certain date and when it's not, the company doesn't keep you informed as to the status and reason for the delay. I'm presently dealing with a similar situation with the JAE stock I ordered last year. I was originally told 10 months, and now I'm hearing (from sources other than the manufacturer) that it will be more like 12-14 months. I'm sure I'll get it, it's just a question of when. I guess if you want something custom made you just have to be willing to deal with the delays that inevitably seem to be associated with this type of stuff.

There seems to be some kind of weird karma involving having a carbon wrapped barrel made. I remember when I ordered mine from ABS (no longer in business) I spent a year waiting for it to be finished. During that time I heard excuses that ranged from "we're giving priority to the military orders", to "it wasn't worked on because I as in the hospital due to a problem with some oral surgery". At one point I was unable to contact them, and when I finally did, found that they had moved theire shop (I had been told beforehand that they were going to be moving, so it wasn't a complete surprise). Based on my, and now your, experiences with this, I'm thinking that getting one of these barrels involves a LOT of aggravation. I know Jense has been around for a long time and has a good reputation so I'm sure you'll see it eventually, it just seems to me that it shouldn't be such an ordeal. Hopefully you'll feel that it was all worthwhile in the end. Good luck with it.

Any idea when you expect this one to be finished?
-
I'd very much like to get dimensions on that, if hes willing to share them.
