When in the corrections academy, our commander related to us a riot story. All was out of control and he went with one tactical team member to get control of a housing unit, the runs shaped like a T, with the control room at the middle. He said he ran into the first leg and it was packed with inmates throwing stuff at them, so they retreated back around the corner. Tac guy had a shotgun and yelled "FIRE IN THE HOLE!", stepped around the corner and let one blast loose down the passageway. Come around the corner, hall is empty, start running down and slamming all the cell doors shut. Some cells were empty, some cells had 8 or 10 inmates. All from a little persuasion from 1 round of birdshot.
