  1. Found a Smith and Wesson M and P subcompact in 9mm for $349 and one with a built in laser for $449. Thoughts about the pistol, and are those good deals? Need a smaller warm weather cc firearm.
  2. A senseless and hearbreaking tragedy. I know the Captain and crew of the rescue boat and have been on it myself. I know where it happened well, and went out to dinner last night with a friend who spent the early morning hours of Friday searching for the family’s bodies. I was on the lake myself that day but was off by the time the Coast Guard alert came through. I am truly saddened for this poor lady’s loss, yet glad Joe and his crew found her. Superior does not give second chances. Superior does not tolerate confident false assumptions and mistakes in equipment or skill level. I have had friends die on this Lake because they were overconfident. Everyday I go out on Superior, I feel a little fear, more so if I am responsible for other people on my boat. Please say a prayer for her and her family. http://www.startribune.com/father-3-children-die-mom-survives-boating-accident-on-lake-superior-near-apostle-islands/492190851/

  5. Don’t get a Japanese high carbon steel cleaver, unless it is really massive. The steel is so hard that it can crack. Japanese knives are so hard they hold an edge like forever, but bone for instance can break the edge. German knives are softer, need sharpening, more, but sharpen easier. Same with Chicago cutlery. Think I may look for a Chicago cutlery cleaver.
  6. The Kamikoto knives being advertised all over right now are not the original deal. They are now forged in China of Japanese carbon steel. They are still good, but not Samurai Katana quality like the original Kamikoto’s
  7. Had Chicago cutlery for years until my wife encountered a damn salesman who convinced her to trade them in for cheap crap when I wasn’t around. She will never hear the end of that, and it was ten years ago. My son the former grill chef at a fine restaurant now has me on Wusthof and Kamikoto knives for the kitchen, and my Cold Steel Outdoorsman has served me for 30+ years and has a couple hundred more in it until it wears out. Relaxing with blades and firearms, why does that sound familiar? Must be a Wisconsin thing.
  8. Relax and, put,” Concert for Bangladesh” on the stereo. ( Now that joke really dates me)
  9. Hi temp today was 59 F with wind. Gettin near fall.
  10. We got hit but not that bad. 3.5 inches of rain yesterday evening. Climate change models predict we are going to be wetter in Northern Wisconsin, and have been getting wetter for the last 50 years.

  12. For moonlighting?
  13. Portage has that effect on everybody who has to be around it. personal code: I never fist fight someone carrying a Glock. Dam, come to think of it, you two might have met already!
  14. The Worksharp doesn’t get the blade hot enough to destroy the temper like a regular grinder can. You feel the abrasive on the belt, and it is barely there, especially the fine grit belt. I was sceptical myself, until I tried it.

    Hello

Welcome from Wisconsin, our sweet corn is peaking right now so I can relate to the edible plants. A lot of knowledgeable people about builds on this forum, so you came to the right place. I am not one of them, but plenty of the members are.
  16. I think that is why they suggest powering down when you get to the end of the blade without removing it. I already made that mistake.
  17. 1 in 12 is fine out to 600+ yards

  19. Triple welcome from WI?
  20. Sounds like you went in,with your eyes open. Should enjoy it. Electronics are great as long as we don’t see them as a replacement for training and practice.
  21. Welcome from Wisconsin. Congrats on the build. Start running triathalons and serious weight training if you are going to be humping that Eliminator 3 on top of your 308AR through those Montana mountains. At 3.3 pounds, that scope is a load! I had an earlier eliminator and sold it as it was too heavy and destroyed the balance of my AR10T carbine, and I found with practice with a simple BDC reticle I could do as well. Out to 600 yards you will be fine with that 18 inch barrel, especially if it is a 1x10 twist, and you are using bullets in the 168-175 grain range. With all due respect I would take the time to practice distance shooting without electronic assistance, as batteries fail at the wrong time. Having the built in laser range finder is nice, though, I miss that.
  22. After talking to a friend who has done three African Safaris on all sorts of game, I have decided to switch to exclusively copper bullets for hunting. I have had enough Sierras break up in deer that I needed to clean out lead and waste meat because of it. He uses nothing but Barnes and marvels how they open up and stay together on all different sizes of game.
  23. Might try another shop. That sounds high.Look in the 308 AR archives, there are some threads on barrel nut wrenches. I paid $29 for my barrel nut wrench. Even if you need to buy a torque wrench as well they are not that pricey.
  24. He must not have had the outdoor blade attachment. It sharpens at a 25 degree angle rather then Kitchen cutlery 20 degree. My monster Cold Steel Outdoorsman fit right in and came out sharp enough to shave with. Kiwi, you always gotta have one of those for the field, even if you have a fancy one for the home bench. If your using your knife day in day out, it needs a good tune up along the way.
