  1. Welcome from Wisconsin. The original Elmer Keith was a legendary firearms writer. Was the father of the 44 Magnum. I assume you already knew about him.
  2. Maybe, but my therapist says it helps. Especially when you have such a strong bond to your rifle. Excuse me, I have to go check the humidity in the gun safe and make sure my little darlin is comfortable.
  3. Oh heavens no. AR10's are "modern sporting rifles". Not to be confused with all those thuggish AK's, AR15's, Tavors, Uzis, Galils and what not.
  4. I showed up at his house after he died and they were having a garage sale without telling me. Snap on tool wrenches 50 cents each. Sockets 10 for $1. To say I was pissed is an understatement. They were both professionally unemployed and had changed the locks on the house and were trying to sell every thing off and pocket the cash. Never was close to them after that. Suspected it might happen and so did my Dad. He gave me all his firearms and power tools two weeks before he died for just that reason.
  5. My Dads set dates from 1952 when I was 4. When he died my sisters got to it and pillaged it, started to sell everything piecemeal before I recovered what was left. I hold a grudge about that to this day.
  6. Saw that, almost did it myself +1 but 308 acss
  7. Not reloading this bunch after this. Might investigate annealing in the future.

    Grilling

The Santa Maria Grill is a lot like the Argentine Parrilla which I learned to use down there. They are awesome in that you can use direct heat yet use the grill pully system to keep the fire from touching the meat. I had one, but it finally rusted out. Today, just doing some slow cooked baby backs for the missus and I.
  9. As an alternative, Optics Planet is selling the Gen 2 Primary Arms 1x6 for $20 off with free 2 day air shipping. I went on Primary Arms website and found that they have transitioned to the Gen 3 of their 1x6 and raised the price to $289 vs Optics Planet closeout Gen 2 at $249. By the time Primary Arms charges tax, you are at $313 for the Gen 3 versus $249 for Gen 2. at Optics Planet. The Gen 3 is 1.8oz lighter, 10mm shorter, and has 10 MOA more adjustment. I just ordered a Gen 2 as I will probably never see it that cheap again and am not too worried about the Gen 3 upgrades for $64 more dollars. It is going on my M1A and the Scope on that is going on my HBAR.
  10. This was a twice fired Remington/Peters case, 223, circa 1996. Second loading was 24 grains RL15 with a 62 gr IMI M855 clone bullet. First was factory 55 gr.
  11. Found a few of these today. Sized 500+ 5.56.
  12. That was the thought for the powder load41.2-41.4
  13. My next load is going to be 175gr Sierra SMK' BTHP. Most likely in Lake City Brass. Just loaded up 205 168 BTHP's with 41.2 RL15 in some Indian M80 spec brass. Winchester was managing the Indian plant at the time -1975- so the brass is pretty good quality.
  14. That is good stuff. See how mine matches up.
  15. I will do that. I was going to do water volume comparisons for 10 of each brass type, and then average out the internal volume. But this will work too. The other 2.5 pounds is going into .308.
  16. Looking for advice and opinions if this is worth doing. I have 500+ brass that is a mix of 5.56 and .223 of about 5 or 6 different manufacturers. Lake City, PMC, Squires and Bingham 5.56, and Winchester and Remington Peters 223. All the brass is going to be on it's third loading, so I don't intend to load it again after this. Some dates back to 1978 left over from my old AR180 shooting. I also have sitting in my cabinet 600 small rifle primers, 5 pounds of Reloader 15, and 600 Hornady 75 gr BTHP's. A really good bullet. I am trying to decide how to mate up all this various brass with the Hornady's in a logical manner. Option 1, I would measure the internal case volume of each brass type, and use a software program like Quickload to extrapolate the chamber pressures and performance of each case type with that bullet. Then in a quest for consistency, adjust the powder in each case type so that all types are as close as possible as far as chamber pressure. My goal would be to try to get the same performance as closely as possible from rounds loaded with different brands of brass. Option 2 Would be to just load a mild to moderate powder charge that would work in all brass with that bullet, but would have significant variables as far as chamber pressure,(although still safe) but probably very variable as to relative accuracy. And just consider it plinking and mag dump ammo. Would kinda be a waste of a really good bullet. Either option, cases will be crimped Primary rifle for use is a Colt Pre Ban Match HBAR, 1 in 7 twist. I am considering switching from a red dot on that one to a decent mid range scope. Option 1 would give me ammo I could probably upload safely to use at further distances. If I did Option 2 I would also use the ammo it in my Olympic Arms carbine with a 1 in 9 twist. Otherwise probably not. I just don't know if Option 1 would be worth all the work, and if the accuracy would justify it, What do you guys think?
  17. Thanks for doing what you did. It's not much but thanks.
  18. Help identify where your brass came from. http://cartridgecollectors.org/index.php?page=headstampcodes
  19. Excellent read. Pretty obvious like 98 says, in Aghanistan it would have been useful and life saving to have a larger, longer distance bullet. In Vietnam or the Philippines? maybe not so much.
  20. Seems to me they need a system that is mission adaptable. They have their work cut out for them with the politics of weapons procurement.
  21. Saw this a while back. https://www.thefiscaltimes.com/2017/05/08/Why-Army-Thinks-It-Needs-Bigger-Bullet
  22. I am guessing you might be geographically close. Good luck Rob.
  23. Welcome!
  24. Find a lot more with 5.56 then 7.62 brass.
