does the ptr91 use the same bolt as the original G3 ? because then you might want to point him towards that german plastic training ammo for cheap range time since you can get the lightweight bolt meant to cycle with it too

I finally ordered an AR15 lower originally with the plans of a 300 AAC upper. But looking at the 458 socom, that is pretty intriguing too. Is it a bad idea to build just the one lower but have more than 1 upper for it? considering they both use the standard ar15 mags.

yeah, its not a free float, just a quad rail and is meant to use the delta ring. Are you trying to put it in the delta ring end first? or in the end cap first? Another option is the magpul MOE handguards. they are inexpensive but allow mounting rails.

There really isn't such a thing (the not break the bank part). Its worth removing the delta ring first whether you cut it off or remove the barrel nut and see if the firefield fits. if its tight enough that you can't rotate it, and you can pick up the gun by the free float rail and you don't see the barrel move, you are good to go. I haven't seen any free floats that i'd feel good about on a 308 for under $150 that I can think of.

yep, no ring at all. Its possible that it does fit, as I used a regular AR15 barrel nut wrench on my 308 dpms upper/barrel nut and it fit 100%, but I did get a 308 specific free float rail. if you don't really care about the delta ring (as in reselling it with the handguard) you can cut it off with a grinding wheel instead of dissassembling the barrel nut. I've heard of a few people doing it on ARs before.

for starters, you don't mount a free float with a delta ring still on. second, I think that free float rail is meant for an AR15, so its unlikely to be the same barrel nut size.

not really :D I wish I would have taken the plunge and bought one back in 2007 when I had been thinking about it though. Then again, many back then were AR15 lowers with custom uppers, and i'm a little happier that (eventually) I'll have the beefier lower for it.

Somehow my initial to my wife "$1500 to build a rifle" turned into closer to $2100, and now another $1000 in ammo + reloading equipment. And I STILL don't have a lower or BCG - although the lower is paid for at least. And garbage optics for it too :P

I had the flipside. my first wouldn't sleep past an hour at a time till she was 18 months. that whole first year and a half she'd wake up every hour screaming for 10-15 minutes then go back to sleep. We were so scarred by it that it took till she was 8 before we had another. The second one? slept 6 hours the night she was born. In the hospital the nurse came in and told us we had to wake her up to feed her. We refused :D and she was good for 8 hours a night by the end of the first week. Made me wish we had them closer together
