If you're getting case head swipes that would seem to be over pressure. Got any pics? Does it matter whether you use .308 or 7.62 ammo?

Bumping this with my thoughts on the DPMS LR-308 G2 Recon. Today bmoney9 and I went to the range to shoot some .308 ARs. He brought his G2 Recon (still had the tag on the trigger guard lol!) and I brought my PWS MK216 and LMT MWS. We wanted to get the G2 zeroed with bmoney9's new SWFA 1-6x24 optic in SWFA Bobro mount. The choice of ammo was Remington Premier Match .308 175gr SMK (good round for the price!) loaded in 10rnd PMAGs. I spotted, while bmoney9 shot in the prone position with my GG&G XDS-2 bipod and hand on sandbags in the rear. Shortly after we had the rifle dialed in. Once that was done a few more groups were shot and the rifle seemed to be running well and consistent. bmoney9 is pretty new at precision shooting and would tend to have "sub-groups" about 1" apart where a couple rounds would be right on top of each other. I figured he probably wasn't getting set up exactly the same each time which caused this. I decided to take a couple short groups with the rifle to see how it handled. When I picked it up I remembered how I felt the first time I played with it and how light it felt compared to my .308s. It's surprising to think that it can even be made lighter with some of the aftermarket handguards out there. I like to think my PWS MK216 handles well when swinging the gun from target to target, but the way the G2 Recon handles is even easier. After I settled in behind the rifle and loaded the trigger to the first stage, I looked down and realized this was a stock DPMS trigger unit. The trigger itself felt a bit wider than normal, but had a nice front face that helps you feel if you're pulling straight back or not. The first stage is slightly longer than my Geisseles, but not overly long like with my LMT 2-stage trigger. The second stage break is crisp and not too far off from my SSA triggers. I actually thought it was pretty good. After firing a group (and coming in at 1-1.5moa), I thought how much this rifle would benefit from a heavy buffer or AR-10 buffer system. While not as harsh as one of my other friend's LR-308 Oracle, the recoil impulse was short and sharp. It didn't beat you up, but the characteristics could definitely be improved. bmoney9 and I made plans to swap it over to an AR-10 pattern buffer system (just so happens I have a spare VLTOR A5 7-position RE too!). We decided to run a bit of all the ammo we had available through the gun to see how it would respond to .308 and 7.62 loads. My PWS (.308 chamber) for example, shows signs of high pressure (cratering and ejector swipe) when used with 7.62 rounds. Cratering is pretty common on the first run G2s even if there isn't high pressure due to the slightly enlarged firing pin hole, and this particular Recon showed that. The ammo we shot was 175gr SMK Remington Premier Match .308, 175gr SMK Silver State Armory .308, 175gr SMK Hunting Shack Munitions M118LR Equivalent 7.62, and 175gr SMK Federal Gold Medal Match 7.62. All rounds functioned perfectly and no high pressure signs were observed. In summary, every time I play with bmoney9's G2 Recon I get the urge to buy one. It handles well, is capable of good accuracy (I have no doubt if I had shot the gun more that I would've been able to produce a better group), reliably takes various ammo, and isn't too pricey. I would definitely drop in a heavier buffer or swap the buffer system for an AR-10 pattern one. It's a fun gun. My best group of the day was shot with my LMT MWS with 16" SS rifle-length gas system barrel (began life as an 18" barrel which was then cut down to 16" and dimpled by Marvin Pitts at Nefarious Arms), March-F 1-8x24mm scope, and HSM M118LR Equivalent 7.62x51 ammo. In other thoughts, I'm continually unimpressed by my Atlas bipod compared to my GG&G XDS-2. It's not as ergonomic or easy to use, and the cant and pivot functions are near worthless. They have two settings, super stiff (almost locked) and really stiff (wouldn't be able to track while moving it and requires too much force to get it to budge thus causing over travel). The ADM QD lever isn't as easy to use as GG&G's and requires tension adjustment for a narrower range of rails (have to unlatch, then loosen the cross bolt tension). On my XDS-2 One tension setting works for almost all my rails, no matter where I attach it, while the ADM QD requires me to adjust the tension for virtually every different rail I put it on.

I got him the M4-72. It only comes in 5.56. I haven't used many other 5.56 brakes (I don't like them due to the side concussion) so I can't really compare, but I wouldn't imagine it'd be a lot more noticeable than other brakes of similar design.

I bought one for my friend this past month. It does a good job of reducing recoil, but man does it REALLY suck to be next to it.

Most of the nitrided barrels already use 4140 or 4150CMV. -

I just saw the Brownell's Edge Program. For $50/yr you get free shipping, free returns, and special members discounts. Sounds great for us .308 AR tinkers who are always having to try out different parts. Anyone else super tempted to sign up?

Suggested Barrel Configurations

Would you mind elaborating on why you offer 18" in both mid and rifle lengths? What's the benefit of having a mid-length on that long of a barrel? I'd also love to see some 16" rifle-gassed barrels. I wholeheartedly second blue's suggestion for a LW 16" barrel with rifle-length gas system. 2014 was year of introducing .308ARs. The trend for mid-2015 through 2016 is going to be how to get the weight down on them. -
This happens EVERY year... Often it's competitors trying to learn trade secrets.

New AR-10A short stroking right out of the box???
FaRKle! replied to hogwylde's topic in AR-10 General, Technical Discussion
H3 is standard for AR-10s (and some other .308 ARs). H2 on SR-25 (Don't know any other .308AR that comes standard with H2 though). -
I guess I'm the only one who's had mixed experiences with EOTech's AA line of sights? I had a 552 and went through drained batteries while off and oxidized contacts. No good. XPS/EXPS or bust!

Shorter barrels can still reach out plenty far. There's a great misconception that AR pistols are only good for short range.

There are four different upper receiver rail heights for the LR-308 family. -LR-308 G1 Low -LR-308 G1 High -LR-308 G1 High Rider -LR-308 G2 Since the G2 is so new, there are no stripped G2 uppers available (nobody makes or sells them), nor are G2 complete standalone uppers for sale, so you don't need to worry about it being a G2.

New AR-10A short stroking right out of the box???

A lot of comps actually do add to the back pressure (Griffin and Battle Comp are some examples) since they have a fairly restrictive design. Their effect is similar to adding a few inches of barrel (which is why some companies can make a 5.56 16" barrel work with a rifle length gas system when paired with a comp). -
That's due to there not being a universal spec for upper receivers like there is in the AR-15 world. They may be the same pattern, but different manufacturers have different tolerance ranges. An AR-10 receiver set has a different cut where the upper and lower receivers meet above the rear take down pin.
-
Welcome! The barrel extension and BCG must be of the same pattern (either both LR-308 or both AR-10 pattern). Technically, you could get away with mixing some parts within the BCG, but it's easier just to keep it all the same pattern. Since you have an AR-10 pattern upper receiver, you'll need an AR-10 pattern rail. The threads on the upper receiver for the barrel nut aren't the same between AR-10 and LR-308 patterns. What would probably give you the most options is getting an LR-308 pattern barrel and BCG but using an AR-10 pattern rail (must, since the AR-10 upper receiver threading). Wilson Combat, Centurion Arms, Troy, Midwest Industries, and others make AR-10 pattern rails.

Yes, with the LR-308 carbine spring and LR-308 carbine buffer your AR-15 PWS EBT will work. I also suggest grabbing a CAR-10 Heavy Buffer. I have a factory PWS MK216 and found that dropping in a heavier buffer smoothed things out. If you found this helpful and are going to order a heavy buffer, please use our Brownell's Affiliate Link (then search part 100-007-353WB) to support the site! Thanks! There have been some cases of PSA's .308 uppers not playing too nicely with other LR-308 lowers, but they may have finally ironed things out. Regardless, it's a good idea to double-check.

New AR-10A short stroking right out of the box???
FaRKle! replied to hogwylde's topic in AR-10 General, Technical Discussion
It shouldn't. That brake doesn't add a bunch of back pressure. -
IIRC Tracy Rifle and Pistol is doing it. They're also the guys that transferred BMoney's DPMS G2 (when every other FFL in the area said it was on the named banned list since the lower has the "DPMS" brand on it). If it could be made so that the slide doesn't cycle after every shot and couldn't unless you changed parts out I think it could satisfy the SSE2 requirements (along with a fixed magwell block and longer barrel length). The whole point of SSE/SSE2 is that the firearm doesn't have to be on the roster for you to legally get it! That also applies to home builds. There's actually three upper receiver rail heights for the LR-308 G1, however you really only need to worry about the "high" and "low" versions. For all three heights the lower receiver is the same! The difference in rail height has to do with the rail height above the charging handle. Since all three heights have the same charging handle position, there isn't any conflict with lowers.
-
Welcome from the East/South Bay! You can still buy/make an SSE AR pistol. What you have to do is register/transfer the pistol without a gas system so that it's strictly single shot. Later you can buy the parts needed to add a gas system. Calguns has a lot of good info, but an awfully low SNR. As Blue said, you can use any LR-308 G1 (commonly referred to as DPMS) upper on your LR-308 lower since the "high/low" profile is determined by the height of the 1913 rail on the upper receiver.
-
US Optics? I expected better of them... Those rifles look awfully big to be only 9lbs. Awesome if true! I wonder how that railfeels in-hand though. Looks pretty oblong height-wise. What's the barrel profile?

As long as it's torqued properly and not cross-threaded you'll be fine.
