  1. Either method gives you the same result. I can see how yours might be easier in some cases.
  2. Sounds like an out of spec barrel. I'm not surprised given the state of the market right now. I use a rifle-length gas system on my MWS. Works great.
  3. Complicated? Hardly. Paintball guns have been using these things for over a decade...
  4. 1MOA = 1.047" @ 100yds. Use that as your reference and divide/multiply 1.047" by the ratio of distance you shot at/100yds to get 1MOA at that distance.
  5. Not LR308 pattern because the rear of the upper receiver cut is still angled. It also uses the AR-10 pattern lower parts.
  6. I expect the G2 to have much greater aftermarket support.
  7. Looks like two more manufacturers have decided to jump on the 2014 .308 AR bandwagon. Wilson Combat just released their "Wilson Combat .308 Project" billed as a lightweight option, both in the weight of the rifle (7.7lbs), and how much slimmer your wallet will be after paying for one. Coming from WC though, you know it has quality parts. One that surprised me a bit is Anderson Rifles' "Big Dog .308" AR. Honestly, there's nothing really special about it, and I'm puzzled by the mid-lengh gas system on an 18" barrel (and that being the only barrel choice). It will be interesting to see if the RF85 coating really does anything for the barrel. What does interest me from Anderson though is the compliment of .308 AR components that they have such as their .308 matched receiver sets (including LPK). I like that we're seeing more SR-25/AR-10A pattern receivers available. They also have a .308 BCG avaialble too.
  8. I believe I looked into this earlier this year and didn't read very good things about it. IIRC the eyebox was really small.
  9. Over on ARFcom the Knight's guys said they tested other companies' bolts in the SR-25, thus the barrel extension is LR308 type. We also know for sure that the MWS BCG is compatible with the SR-25 BCG. There are plenty of examples of people using LR308 bolts with their MWS. That tells me that they're LR308 compatible. Just be sure to check the headspace. Also, Fulton Armory is another good BCG. Pretty sure Bubbasks has one.
  10. Oh God, Blackthorne... My friend's cousin bought one of their .308 stainless uppers. It wouldn't cycle for crap so he asked me to take a look at it. Here's a summary of what I found wrong: -Mis-aligned gas port to barrel extension (gas port was not at TDC). -Mis-aligned clamp on gas block (only about 1/3 of the gas block hole was over the gas port). -Loose gas block screws with no threadlocker. -Undersized gas block (the gas block hole that goes over the gas port was smaller than the gas port). -Poorly machined cam track (the cam pin would get stuck because the track wasn't machined large enough). -Wrong extractor spring (they used a weak AR-15 one with no o-ring, it had very little tension). I ended up having to realign the gas block, put threadlocker on the gas block screws, grind down the cam track a bit, and get a new extractor spring for it. Before that this gun wouldn't cycle 5 rounds in a row before having an FTE. Robocop was with me one of the times I was troubleshooting this upper. I'll echo the "start with the gas system" suggestion. If all is ok there, see if the BCG cycles smoothly by hand (work the action slowly). You should be able to feel any hangups. Also, check your extractor tension. Sometimes your failure to extract can be caused by the extractor letting go too early due to not enough tension.
  11. DPMS' .308 parts reputation is much different from their AR-15 parts. It's not like you're dealing with CMMG! =P
  12. For an AR pistol you're going to want an H3 buffer probably. Damage Industries is having 25% off right now with code "TRICKORTREAT" and has a bunch of the parts you need.
  13. 1) Yes, LMT is LR308 pattern. 2) Not many reports on AP's .308 parts, but if it's like their AR-15 stuff, it's solid. 3) JP is LR308 pattern. I'm not a fan of low-mass BCG stuff. I think you're over thinking the BCG thing here.
  14. Yes, the BCM block will work great (it has very tight tolerances). If you ask the DPMS rep again about the buffer system, you'll need to specify that you're using a VLTOR A5 receiver extension and not their normal carbine receiver extension. The A5 extension is the same length as an AR-10 extension.
  15. As we said before, it all depends on which barrel extension is being used. If you get a DPMS LR308 pattern barrel extension, then you need a LR308 pattern BCG. If you get an Armalite AR-10 pattern barrel extension, then you need an AR-10 pattern BCG. Aero Precision parts are made in LR308 pattern. What DPMS said applies to a DPMS pattern buffer system. I specifically recommended an AR-10 buffer system because it'll let you tune it more easily and has more margin with regards to reliability. Yes, you can use an AR-10 buffer system on an LR308 pattern gun. My PWS is an example. You won't into buffer length issues because the receiver extension you'll be using (VLTOR A5) is longer than the usual AR-15 carbine receiver extension. There's a reason no military rifles use clamp on blocks. Set screw plus dimple is more mechanically secure. Clamp on blocks rely on a screw that has a lot of strength across the diameter of the screw (the shortest dimension!) since when tightening it's effectively bending the screw. With a set screw block the force is only concentrated on the threads of the screw (most surface area). If the barrel is dimpled, then you can't physically rotate the block while a clamp on block can still rotate. Also, Damage Industries is having a 25% off sale with code "TRICKORTREAT". Time to get your buffer.
  16. -End plate and castle nut (if adjustable stock desired). -Gas block -Gas tube roll pin (if not included with either gas block or gas tube, this is a toss up). -Crush or peel washers for muzzle device timing.
  17. I don't believe Armalite bolts and LR308 barrel extensions are compatible.
  18. Saw these IMI LR308/SR25 pattern mags on AIM. Apparently they allow for slightly longer rounds than PMAGs do. They also have a window (which only the 25rnd .308 PMAG has). Since I can't legally buy these, can I nominate Robocop instead for "The Rule"? >:D
  19. DO NOT get the A5 buffer. That buffer is too long and is only meant for AR-15 A5 systems. I usually get my buffers from Damage Industries because they run sales so often. Yes. It may be available other places too (Heavy Buffers also sells them). Correct, that's the right receiver extension.
  20. At the time I didn't know which stock you were getting. Since you're getting the STR, get the 7-position receiver extension since the STR is long enough to close all the way on it (some other stocks like the CTR aren't long enough to close all the way and thus would need the 6-position model). If you want an adjustable gas block (ever plan on running suppressed?) I'd go with the SLR Sentry, otherwise, a BCM or Geissele one works great. Gas tubes are pretty standard. Any well known brand or store's should work. For your 16" barrel it'll probably be mid-length.
  21. Please post the specs when you get it (weight and gas system length)! BTW would you happen to know the if the barrel extension and barrel were nitrided separately, assembled, and then the gas hole was drilled, or if they were assembled first, gas hole drilled, and then nitrided? The order of this is important to determine whether or not the extension is attached with the proper torque value.
  22. Good to see you found this place. I replied to your "Great .308 Debate" thread on M4C. The MATEN set is pretty darn nice. If you want a slightly cheaper option you could always go with a set of forged receivers and a Midwest Industries or Fortis Switch rail. That may be slightly lighter too. Since weight is one of your priorities, you might also look at light-weight options such as Brownell's 16" light-weight, mid-length barrel. The BCG you selected is good, but I don't really think the exterior carrier chroming is really worth the extra cost. Check out Aero Precision's BCG. All Geissele AR triggers work just fine in an LR308 pattern gun. I use SD-E's in my .308 ARs. My .308 ARs run BCM MOD 3 charging handles. Not too heavy and the large latch makes one-handed charging very easy. Also not as expensive as the other options (and there are actually sales on them). If you like the STR, just get another for your .308AR. Just make sure you get a mil-spec diameter receiver extension. The STR will close fully on a VLTOR 7-position receiver extension. As for the other parts I'll copy what I posted on M4C: Carbine receiver extension isn't the same on the AR-10. The AR-10 carbine receiver extension is longer than the standard AR-15/LR308 carbine tube. The rifle receiver extension is the same length on all three (AR-15, LR308, and AR-10).
  23. I guess it was inevitable with their .308 upper/lower release, but now Aero Precision's got complete rifles available. Pretty affordable too!
  24. FaRKle!

    It's here!

Robo's got some "special status" that exempts him from our SSE and 1-in-30 laws. No excuses left for him now! =P
  25. Just the trigger spring I hope. That's what I did with my LMT 2-stage (although I think the 1st stage is a bit too light).
