New to Armalite, pros/cons to swapping barrels?
GRA replied to WMTX91's topic in AR-10 General, Technical Discussion
I've been impressed with the ArmaLites that I've checked out so far and I was sure that you would be when you got yours ... CONGRATS on your new purchase. <thumbsup> <thumbsup> <thumbsup> I've checked out about 3 DEF-10 models here in the last 30 days and all of them were new and had somewhat loose hand guards as you described. I definitely noticed that so it must be something regular from the factory. I did also notice the take-down pins were a little more user-friendly. What sights did you decide to use, but the way? As for recoil, I have nothing to compare it to other than an AR15 in 5.5.6 and in 7.62x39 since I have never fired a .308 on the AR platform. I'm anticipating a bit more punch than the 7.52x39 I have. I agree, if I was to get one I think I would go ahead with an A2 stock if I encountered that type of recoil. I've also fired the 45-70 guvmint round and it reminded me of my muzzleloader. This recoil as I recall was a bit more than the AR 7.62x39 of mine. The last DEF-10 I checked out also had the "SPR Mod 2A" on the receiver. and NOT the DEF-10 model designation. The vendor checked this out and came out of his office and said, "You're right, it's a model DEF-10". So I'd say this is some sort of number unique to ArmaLite. As for the barrel markings, I don't think you'll have any problems firing either 7.62 NATO, and/or .308 rounds. ArmaLite's website claims their barrels are good for both. From what I recall of the factory single-stage trigger it seemed average compared to factory mil-spec AR15 triggers. That's the good thing about buying the base model; when you have a strong aftermarket to can choose your preferred trigger without having spent the extra bucks on what somebody likes as a custom trigger. Good job. Keep us informed on the accuracy. <thumbsup> -
New to Armalite, pros/cons to swapping barrels?
GRA replied to WMTX91's topic in AR-10 General, Technical Discussion
Sorry to hear about the delay. If the shipping was routed thru the southern Golf Coast state(s) then this is understandable. We've still got rivers flooding here in our area. All of them are up high as ever. Hope it gets in soon. I know the anticipation sometimes is hard to bear. -
And the late Mr. John Armstrong formerly out of Emmitsburg, MD ... <thumbsup>

Great news. <thumbsup> Glad this turned out finally. Most impressive was the lack of recoil. I hope mine turns out half as good. As for reloading I'm sure I'll get off in to that sometime this year.

Not uncommon to see in small town Texas back when I was a kid. Nobody really cared.

Welcome from Texas. Enjoy the site. ^-^ -
25-30 years ago nobody really cared if you walked in to a business carrying a long arm, or had one in the gun rack covering the rear window of your pickup, etc., It was common-place and people weren't alarmed by it because they simply saw it ALL THE TIME. Teenagers were seen in open possession of firearms (in Texas it was always just long-arms) during hunting season. Nobody ever worried about this. School shootings, drive-by(s), etc., were never heard of. The closet-communist liberals have been able to successfully erode the positive attitude we once had nationally towards firearms to the point that common display of such firearms was no longer considered acceptable or "cool", and/or because you were afraid of the rampant theft that came along in the 80(s), folks started to conceal their weapons. Once out of sight over an extended period of time, the visibility of firearms, lending to the commonality of firearms, disappeared. Later, in comes a younger, newer, and somewhat brainwashed generation(s) that freaked-out and panicked whenever they did see firearms displayed in such a manner. Open display of any firearm(s) is something dangerous to them that should not be seen or even possessed, thus lending to the success of the seditious liberals. It will take a long time to re-establish the older norms and change these attitudes back to the way they once were, and should be, and until such time we will have to endure the sheer ignorance of the 9-1-1 caller in the narrative above. I cringe when I think of how may children she may have raised to be just like her.

Texans ... Speaking of Texas (heads-up this coming November) and the right to hunt and fish in Texas: The Right to Hunt and Fish Proposition 6 On November 3rd Ballot Texas Secretary of State Carlos Cascos Draws for Placement on November 3rd Ballot This morning in Austin, Carlos Cascos, the Texas Secretary of State, held a drawing to determine the ballot position for constitutional amendments passed by the Texas Legislature. SJR22 by Sen. Brandon Creighton and Rep. Trent Ashby will be listed as proposition 6 on the November 3rd ballot. Mark your calendars, Members. This is a must-pass issue!

Cool. Sounds like you just got a bad part initially. Anxious here to see how it all performs at the range, which of course, sounds like there will be no problems at all. Glad to hear it's getting worked out. Please post up here your results from the range trip the weekend. <thumbsup>

Interesting point; we actually had somebody here in the Houston area get attacked and shot while simply mowing his front yard. Turned out it was a gang initiation and the choosing was random. Although this allegedly wasn't originally planned as a shooting, the homeowner started beating the sense out of the person that initially attacked him so the one of the other passengers in the car simply shot the guy who was winning the fight. They all got caught. I think the homeowner actually died. Sad. He should've been armed obviously.

I fully agree with you on this. Since licensed open carry has recently passed here in Texas I've had numerous conversations with people both for and against it. My response is that although I will personally choose not to open carry, I feel equally as strong about everybody simply having the right to choose. I have to agree with you also. I can see however why a dispatcher would rather error on the side of caution and roll a unit out to see if the person was walking around with 2 heads or something but other than that the dispatcher AND the responding officer should've thereafter told the caller that there is no law(s) prohibiting the wearing of weapons along with camo clothing. Absolutely ridiculous.

Federal American Eagle .223 50gr $5.89/20rnds
GRA replied to 392heminut's topic in Sales and Coupons
Received notification today from PSA that my package is in the mail with an expected delivery date of Tuesday next week, to Texas. They processed and shipped as fast as can be reasonably expected. They most likely received a large amount of orders for the ammo I ordered due to the sale prices. I'd say this is pretty good service. <thumbsup> In the Anointed One's honor I just might send a duplicate order seeing how the same ammo is still on sale. :)) -
Now that IS impressive. <thumbsup>

By the way ... our next gun show is this weekend so if you do get to the range on Friday please try to post an update here before 10:00 AM Saturday morning as I will most likely be going to the show and will be looking for one of those triggers IF my BCG(s) don't appear to be likely to give me the same trouble.

Great news. Here's hoping you get your range day. I surely will NOT see anything close to range day for another 2 weeks with all the rain we've had here lately and the overtime we've been working. As for the measurements ... how does the measurements of the BCG they are now sending you compare to the measurements of the bolt that I posted? I ask this because there is a possibility the BCG(s) that I have will give me the same trouble. :-[

LOL ... worked pretty good ! <thumbsup>

FWIW ... Just checked the link in the OP above. Went in to Tech Notes section. Note there said "Coming Soon". Most likely the absence of them is due only to the website being redone.

OIC ... did it again. My apologies. I've been straightened out about that now. -
