Well, gents, building my 5.56 Dissipator rifle (in secret...) has led to a sickness. I am now looking into building my own version of a CSASS-type rifle for the wife. Perhaps this is penance for building a rifle for myself behind her back, I don't know. Or perhaps, after the OIS on 9/17/17 here, where the suspect was using an AR-10 to send .308s through the walls of his house to keep from going to jail, I want her to be as heavily armed as possible when she gets a call-out. Regardless, she doesn't know about this one, either. Yet. For reference, here is what I believe to be a spec list for the U.S. Army's CSASS: https://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ground/csass.htm So far, I have a Fulton Armory FAR-308 lower. And nothing else. Here are the highlights of my proposed parts list: 1. FA FAR-308 Upper, "DPMS Low" 2. Criterion/FA 18.5" medium-weight SS rifle gas barrel (considering a Criterion/ADM 16" rifle gas barrel, hybrid or HBAR) 3. FA NiB BCG (not firm on NiB, but when the "plain Jane" version is $270 and the NiB is $300, maybe the NiB is worth the marginal extra cost...) 4. MagPul UBR buttstock 5. MagPul MIAD 1.1 pistol grip 6. Midwest Industries DPMS Low M-Lok handguard (15" for 18.5" barrel, 12" for 16") 7. Leupold Mk 4 LR/T 3.5-10x40 (mildot) 8. KAC 300m 45° offset BUIS Keep in mind this rifle may be used in an LE capacity as a "long range" solution. Of course, in LE circles, 95% of "sniper" shots take place between 0 and 100 yards.

Welcome from Oklahoma.

If you'll notice, the versions of the Mini-14 that are exempt are the versions without "scary features". Essentially, so long as it looks like your dad's rifle, it's not a dangerous killing machine.
-
Another interesting observation... The Ruger Mini-14 is specifically exempted from this bill, so long as it does not have a folding/telescoping stock or pistol grip. However, the Mini-14 Tactical does have a threaded barrel. So, would a Mini-14 Tactical, in a "traditional" synthetic stock, with a threaded barrel be a "semiautomatic assault weapon'? It's specifically excluded... The term ‘semiautomatic assault weapon’ means any of the following, regardless of country of manufacture or caliber of ammunition accepted: (A) A semiautomatic rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any 1 of the following: (i) A pistol grip. (ii) A forward grip. (iii) A folding, telescoping, or detachable stock. (iv) A grenade launcher or rocket launcher. (v) A barrel shroud. (vi) A threaded barrel.

M1 Carbines (with "standard fixed stock") and M1 Garands (with fixed 8 round capacity and fixed stock) are specifically exempted from her bill. However, I see no mention anywhere of M14s, M1As, etc. -- I even searched the document (Ctrl+F).

Wait... so an SKS with a detachable magazine is an AR-type rifle (see page 7. line 8)? Huh... Who'da thunkit?

I was talking with my wife (LEO) about this last night. She told me about several incidents where a subject was convicted by court martial, but that conviction was never entered into NCIC, the database a NICS check searches. Not once, not twice, but several times in her 9-year (so far...) career in a small town of <25,000 people this has happened. Methinks the military is dropping the ball on a fairly regular basis. This latest shooting is a shining (like a diamond in a goat's ass...) example of that. What is it the NRA has been saying all these years? Oh, yeah... ENFORCE THE LAWS ON THE BOOKS before we go inventing new, ever more asinine restrictions.

Try backing the gas block down a bit. Like, all the way down. One click (or, say, 1/4 turn -- can't remember how the Superlative GB is set up...) up at a time until it functions flawlessly and leave brass anywhere from 3 o'clock to about 4:30. In my experience, ejection forward of 3 o'clock indicates either over-gassed or too light on the buffer/spring combo. Since your buffer is correct, and you now have the correct spring, the only other thing to do is reduce the gas that makes it to the BCG.

Best Buffer Spring for AR-10 w/ Rifle-Length Receiver Extension
COBrien replied to AR-Tenner's topic in General Discussion
I have no issues with the ArmaLite spring in my LR-308T (spring and buffer from Slash...), but if you must have a round-wire spring that's not made by ArmaLite, here you go: http://www.fulton-armory.com/bufferspringtitanrifle-1.aspx Also, it is my understanding that springs don't "take a set" just from being kept collapsed. It's the repeated cycling of a spring that causes them to lose tension. If your OEM spring has gone weak, buy a new spring... -
My wife swears by Bates side-zip boots. She buys a new pair every year with her uniform allowance, and has yet to have a pair let her down.

Same reason as these, I'd imagine...

My wife worked a suicide a couple of years back where a guy decided to eat 12 ga. bird shot in his front yard. They found skull fragments (approx. 1/2"x1/2") and brain matter on the neighbor's roof, some 100 yards away...

I don't know that I'd be going around telling that story to everyone... Personally, I give not one shite about bump-fire/slide-fire stocks. Stop production immediately and it won't hurt my feelings. As others have posted, they're an accessory -- like a sling, bipod, pistol grip, etc. -- not a firearm. I see no 2A infringement there. I do understand the "slippery slope" argument. I also understand the parable about mice and cookies. Gun control advocates need to do something to make them feel better -- that's how they're wired. "We MUST prevent this from happening again," they say, knowing full well that this particular shitbird would have committed his crimes with or without special buttstocks. Truth be told, he likely would have inflicted more damage without bump-fire... I say let them have this one. Let them go around beating their chests and proclaiming victory over a part that seemingly no one actually wants to use (aside from the frat boys at the range who love turning daddy's money into noise...), while pro-gun legislators continue their efforts with more pressing issues, like de-listing suppressors.

Now waiting for the big push to overturn the law barring civil suits against firearms manufacturers. Too bad for DD...

From that article... ”Fully automatic weapons are illegal, but machinists can convert them. YouTube videos also explain how it can be done. There is one unlikely exception. A machine gun purchased prior to 1986 is eligible for a license from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which issued a tax stamp. But those stamps are almost impossible to acquire.” Umm. Okay.

Based on the change in firing rate (during strings of shots, not after having had time to change rifles), I'm predicting at least some of the rifles used were fitted with a trigger crank of some sort. You can hear the RPM slow down, then speed back up from time to time.

White House says it's "too early" to call this an act of domestic terrorism. Well... What else could it be? A misunderstanding? A 'Nam flashback? "Workplace violence"? What legitimate explanation could there be?
-
I'm more worried about a serious re-visit of the "Assault Weapons Ban." So... I purchased 2 insurance policies this morning. 1 FAR-15 lower and 1 FAR-308 lower. Trying to beat the price increase and scarcity that will follow.

What do you have on order or in the mail? Part 2

Planning for the future... 1x Fulton Armory FAR-15 lower; and 1x Fulton Armory FAR-308 lower w/ special proprietary bolt catch hootis. -
I used Google maps to estimate the range. Approx. 400 yards from the hotel to the middle of the arena. Plus elevation of 320ish feet (assuming 10 feet per floor).
-
I agree -- I don't have any experience with the FAR-308, but I've been impressed with the quality of the parts I've gotten from Fulton Armory.
-
Thank you, sir! I’ve got this elaborate scheme in my head. “You know, I’ve wanted to build an AR for awhile now. I know you said ‘not yet’ back in January, but I started seeing parts going on sale at obscenely low prices and started buying them Johnny Cash style. The money has already been spent (and it’s about 30% less than MSRP for the individual parts...), it’s just a matter of taking a couple of hours and putting it all together.” Or, I now have another option: “You know, my buddy who just got his FFL took this rifle in on a trade. He’s making me a helluva deal...”
-
No envy at all — very nice rifle you have there! The further I got into buying parts for my 5.56 Dissy, the more I thought about building a Low upper for my LR-308, rather than re-barreling my “Target” upper, with a 16” rifle gas barrel. I like a slick sided upper, but the Ultra High DPMS slick side is just too much unless you’re running a 50mm+ objective.
-
Looks great, I'm a fan of green furniture... Makes me want to get permission to actually get my Dissy upper put together, rather than just mocking it up for pics... I, too, have a dream of one day building a .308 Dissy upper for my LR-308. All it takes is money, right?
