  1. we don't have mule deer around here. but the county above mine has a heard of elk, not sure when they will let us hunt them, but up north there is elk hunting. but I have had white tails so big that they didn't want to even go down with a well placed shot through both lungs. is the reason I don't hunt with .243 win anymore. then again, shoot them in the head and doesn't matter what caliber it is, they drop like a rock. haha.
  2. that's like a baby deer in Wisconsin. :P
  3. I generally like longer gas systems also... but some rounds are more finicky with them. have a good adjustable gas block and this should have reduce the problem. longer gas systems feel better, shorter ones just eat anything. but as long as you tune your gun to your loads, longer shouldn't be a problem. the twist like you were talking about earlier might take a bit more research. would love to hear what you find out.
  4. the 20" would get the velocity up to give you a bit more energy on impact. my thoughts though, it is already a short range hunting rifle or we would go with a .308 or other. :P
  5. Interesting. I checked and it looks like the old .25-20 is 1:12 all the way up to 1:20, while the .25-06 is a 1:10. Surely this little sharps won't be punching out pills as heavy as .25-06. Maybe 98 can build one with multiple barrels in different twists and test it out for us? :P
  6. Survival, I think we agree. using the same mags, bolt, brass, etc. is a huge plus for changing a caliber in an AR-15. I'm all for only changing the barrel. which for me leaves the choice down to 25-45 sharp, 300BLK, and 6x45mm. These 3 calibers all use .223 brass and only need a barrel swap, any I am missing please let me know. Ok, by looking at things a bit, correct me if I am wrong, at 200 meters the 25-45 has more velocity, shoots flatter, and has more energy. So unless planning on shooting subsonic rounds with a suppressor, 25x45 should be better than 300BLK for just about anything and everything. I did a little comparing of 25-45 to 6x45, very similar, not surprisingly considering how close in diameter the bullets are, however couldn't quite find charts that matched up good enough to do a real worth while comparison in math. I would like to note though, that when comparing bullets that can go in these two loads 6mm bullets had better ballistic coefficient than 25 caliber bullets. Both these calibers have the energy to take deer size game to 200 yards (with good shot placement) but 300BLK has about the same energy at only 100 yards. 6x45mm seems to have less wind drift, bullet drop, and more energy retention in extended range than 25-45. 25-45 does seem to beat the 6x45 at closer range for taking game, but that is to be expected. Sharps may be making the 25-45 a bit more easy to come by, but don't overlook the 6x45 (6mm-223 Remington) if you are a reloader. I for one would love to see some more numbers in comparing the two if anyone can provide them.
  7. This caliber has interested me lately. I have heard great things about it... then when researching it I found a lot of bad reviews. I have to say, I rarely see a split in the discussions like what the 25-45 sharps. So the question becomes, what is bullpoopy and what isn't. If we are looking for a decent AR-15 cartridge for taking deer size game (using readily available .223 brass) how does the 25-45 compare to the 300 blackout or maybe other calibers such as 6x45mm? then there are other calibers that use the less readily available, but still rather common, 6.8 SPC brass such as 6PDK. I have to say using .223 brass at least for me would be the goal in an AR-16 deer gun, but I really haven't seen much that compares to calibers such as 6mm AR and 6.5 Grendel because of their case design. I may have gone off on a bit of a tangent... so I'll just restate the actual question. lol. "If we are looking for a decent AR-15 cartridge for taking deer size game (using readily available .223 brass) how does the 25-45 compare to the 300 blackout or maybe other calibers such as 6x45mm?"
  8. When you are ready, let me know and I will put you in contact with the Wisconsin Sea Grant Aquaculture outreach specialist and he can help you with any questions and issues. Also the state aquaculture association sounds good brother. might be a while, but definitely in the plans.
  9. hehe. more fun that way. :P
  10. well my wife is breast feeding... but I wouldn't dare call her a cow
  11. originally I thought I would like using catfish because it is my favorite fish to eat and they a pretty hardy fish that is not difficult to keep alive. but my wife doesn't like catfish. she is pretty picky when it comes to eating fish. trout might be more to her liking. and there are several trout farms around my area so it wouldn't be hard to get the fish I need to start out. Sisco, maybe when I have the money I will have you come over and help me build a system. haha. And thanks for the support on the house guys. still a lot that can fall through, especially because the VA has to sign off on the loan and so the house needs to meet their requirements.
  12. I have always wanted an aquaponics setup! An offer we put in on a house was just accepted, so maybe I will be able to build one in a year or two. :)
  13. Just got my magpul MIAD Grip for my build. piece by piece
  14. I have never had their coffee, but I love watching Matt Best's videos
  15. omg, to funny. well, he did become one with his weapon. lol
  16. 7mm-08 is slightly superior over .308. but if you are going factory ammunition, .308 is far more common and has far more options to choose from for bullets. getting less than 60 in drop at 800-1000 yards is wishful thinking I believe. Using hornady's ballistics chart, which I often use as a quick reference, 7mm-08 at 500 yards is dropping 39.6 in to 56.6 in depending which hornady bullet. Their .308 rounds drop 40.7 in to 63.2 in at 500 yards. They used a 24" barrel for their charts also. http://www.hornady.com/assets/files/ballistics/2017-Standard-Ballistics.pdf 270 Win will shoot a little flatter (low 30s for drop at 500 yards) but the cartridge might be to long for an AR-10 without some mods, would have to ask someone else about that. And along the same lines, there is 270 WSM. Plus I am sure their are other cartridges out there that might shoot flatter, but will they fit in a standard AR-10, beats me. And still doubtful that at 800-1000 yards it will have less than 60 in in drop. As the distance increases, the bullet will slow down and the drop will increase at a faster rate. Now I haven't shot past 600 yards since the military, so please correct me if I am wrong
  17. screw range report, I am ready for a barbeque! Isn't that what it is made for? :P
  18. Lol. I have never had tongue, I hear it is pretty good though. Maybe Rita just didn't like you slipping her the tongue.
  19. haha yup, otherwise you break the stock and then you are just pissed. lol
  20. lol. my wife is a great cook... she hates cleaning though... and so do I. so yeah we need to hire a topless maid also, which my wife wouldn't mind as long as I was just looking and not touching.
  21. oh how kind of you shepp, I would hate to put you out like that though. :P but seriously, if anyone finds an Aero lower in FDE, I'll buy it off you. ;)
  22. don't tell her what it is, just cook it. then when she decides it is really good, you tell her. lol.
  23. those are the key words. I love thinner and longer bullets with high BCs, but if you are going factory ammo, nothing really compares to what is out there for .308, far more to choose from and a lot easier to find. usually cheaper also.
  24. I think all I have in the freezer is venison. which is fine with me!
  25. I never complained either. :P .30-06 is good for hunting bigger game at longer distances, but it has been shown here that .308 can take elk at 200 yards no problem. Noreen is probably more of an out west gun that can frequently shoot at greater ranges at large game.
