Commando build carry handle and front sight
Albroswift replied to Albroswift's topic in Member Builds
I was thinking AR15 carry handle, but now that you mention it... Got lots of projects, don't need everything right away. I'll keep my eyes open, and bid $1.00 more then @jtallen83 -
Commando build carry handle and front sight
Albroswift replied to Albroswift's topic in Member Builds
If the new gas block doesn't shove up tight against it I can turn a spacer. Gas block in photo doesn't have any thing to do with the build. Probably have to drill a new port or reverse a gas block for everything to fit up. -
Rounding up parts for next build, want to mount a carry handle on the "low profile" flat top, and front sight on a picatinny gas block. Cutting the shoulder back on my last sig 12.5" barrel to work with a 6" Armalite handguard and the delta ring set @shooterrex donated. Kind of an XM177E2 look in .308. After spending hour or three on google, more questions then answers. #1; How do I get the heights of the sights correct? #2 How to match up a gas block, front sight with a picatinny carry handle? #3 Who makes a 308 low profile height picatinny gas block? Really like one that's adjustable, but I can deal with that either way. Or a shorter rail/ taller sight? Holy moly... Other option would be the fixed front sight, got plenty of journal length. I plan on moving the port anyway. Still have to match the height.

About right, 20+++ years ago I bought 4/ 8 lb jugs of Data2200 for about 10 or 15 bucks a piece. Thought it was a lifetime supply at the time. Works great for 22 hornet, .223, 458S, now down to a jug and a half or so. Champion (excellent real man on the phone tech support) says it's still good as long as it's been stored properly, and direct sub for AA/AAC#2200. In the SOCOM I run it upper end of the scale or it leaves the little briquettes in the chamber. I've used it in 308 also with lighter bullets, excellent SD's but not as much velocity as other 308 powders.

Pistol Brace Update, from 7 Jun 21
Albroswift replied to 98Z5V's topic in Firearm Industry News and Gossip
Does the flash can count as a non operational accessory? Just measured the 7.5 barreled AR15 pistol. 28" with 3" flash can and the brace extended fully. (I know, rhetorical question, right?) -

Plus 1 on the cutaway case gauge and Tromix. Their products are clearly the result of sharp quality tooling. I tried 400gr, 405gr lead and jacketed, 350 gr jacketed, and the Barns TTSX 300 gr. The Barns won out hands down. (Unless you are trying to go sub sonic suppressed, then the heavier the better I would think) The Lil gun and Data2200 (AA#2200, AAC#2200) powder worked better then the RL7 in a 14-1/2" barrel, although I gave up pretty quick on the RL7. I preferred the Hornady sizing die over the Redding, I have and used both. Like the Hornady expander ball better. Need 4 tungsten weights and 4 to 4-1/4" in length if you want 10 oz. Found one more supplier in the $50 range that fits the bill but forgot who now. I'll run across them again and post in the buffers thread. To buy tungsten weights it's almost $10.00 ea after shipping so if you can get a 4 weight buffer for $50 yur golden. I'm going to run my special 5 weight in the 10mm, but that project is in the "receiver only in a box on the shelf" phase right now. Brother is working on the 45, got upper, lower, LPK, BCG looking for a 7"-8" barrel with 5/8x24 threads. DTT has one in stock with the 578x28 for cheap, holding off for now.
-
Yep. On their waiting list. Also, want 5/8 threads, want to bore out a 308 cookie cutter for the 45. Really irritate the guy shooting in the next lane. ... Stern has one in stock but .578x28.

Hello, all Looking for a 7"-8" 45ACP AR barrel and a near carbine length 10mm blowback AR barrel
-
Looking through KAKs site, they have a 4 weight and 4 weight adjustable 4 inch buffers, the straight 10 oz with 4 tungsten weights isn't much more then buying the weights alone.

Not sure where this should go, want to give a shout out to NFA, Sunday, Memorial day weekend, had a couple questions about one of their product AR 45/10 gen 2 upper. Filled out the contact form with a question, within minutes Patrick/ Retail Sales sent me an email with the info. sent him a follow up, he was back within a few more minutes. I've filled out the "Contact" form for many online retailers, usually takes 3 days to 2 weeks (to never) to hear back. .

What do you have on order or in the mail? Part 2
Albroswift replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
Holy Moly, thinking after my last purchase I needed to cut back on spending, then Dead Foot Arms sent me an email saying their 2.5" kits were back in stock. Grabbed one, out of stock this morning. Guess I'm cutting back on spending next month. -

AR10 carbine type handguard for DPMS pattern
Albroswift replied to Albroswift's topic in Building a .308AR
Copy. No hurry, couple builds in front. Found a 308 Barrel Nut Delta Ring Assembly DPMS on GB for $22.00. -
Hello, All Looking for a retro handguard for future build. Like the round ar15 but with ar308 barrel nut. Any ideas?
-
Took the Anderson out today, the carbine if you all remember we replaced everything, and then sent back to Anderson and they replaced the upper, lower, and barrel. Shoots flawlessly, brother had the 6.5 we built off the BA barrel purchased from one of the 308 brothers a while back, that shot flawlessly also, got there early and grabbed the two 200 yard lanes at the Seattle police range. A lot of heat mirage coming off the 100 yard berms but still drilling good groups at 200. Good morning for sure!

Before my incredibly short attention span and Al-zimers moves me along to the next project, I'm posting up some musings on blowback buffers. Not claiming to be an expert in the subject and by no means a complete dissertation. Any-hoo: Tried several different combinations of springs and buffers over 3 AR40's, 2 with 4" barrels and 1 with a 16" barrel. First of all, 3-1/4" buffers don't quite work. End up with too much travel and with LRBHO the bolt is moving way too fast when it hits. First solution was a spacer to limit travel. Spikes sells one as well. Works OK, but space could be put to better use. KVP has a 4-1/8" 7.5 oz solid SS or 10 oz Stainless with 4 tungsten weights. The solid didn't work well for us, too much bounce, my opinion the weights really help deaden the effect. The 10 oz (Mine weighed 10.29 oz) worked good and fair priced. Problem with the KVP is it is designed for a spring that compresses to about 3-1/2" which as far as I know doesn't exist. Then tried the Quarter Circle 10, 11.2 oz, tungsten weights, and the head is a little bigger so about the correct compression for a Sprinco Red or EA1095 spring. A little shorter overall then the KVP's and made out of material that rusts! Heavier then SS? Ran really, really smooth in the 16" AR40/ red spring. Two problems with the QC10, damn thing is 120 bucks, and when I was going to buy another one anyway, found out they quit selling them! QC10 now only sells firearms it looks like. So, shop time. First bored the KVP 7.5 solid to hold 4 weights, came in even heaver then the QC10 or the KVP 10, possibly due to the bore was a little tighter. Added a collar to set spring compression. Also turned a monster that holds 5 weights, set up for a red or EA spring in a 7-11/16" extension tube. Some deductions: If you are already running a KVP 10oz and a Sprinco orange, a SS collar can add some weight, 1.5 oz, +/- and sets the orange spring for full compression. (Sprinco Orange was designed around a 2-1/2" buffer in a 7" tube and 308 BCG I believe) Sprinco Red and the KVP, a 5/8" 0 .75 oz spacer sets the spring compression and brings the total up to 11+ oz Some more picks: Some good information here: The American PDW https://10mmautocombat.wordpress.com/blowback-bolt-calculations/

Holy moly, found 2 sticks of 303 stainless on ebay, bought it, delivered today, they sent me all they had! Not only that, invoice is from KVP! Got plenty of KAW VALLEY buffer stock now, that's for sure
-
KVP 4-1/8" 11.5 oz Their SS is not quite as mill friendly as the SS I used on the 4-13/16" buffer. Got er though.
-
The problem I have with the KAW is it's a solid, offers no dead blow effect. I think that is as huge a factor as is weight. Almost done boring out my KAW SS 7.5 oz for 4 weights, should match performance the discontinued QC-10 that I have great luck with in the AR40 carbine, maxes out at 11.3 oz with 4 tungsten. For the 9MM maybe 2 tung and 2 steel, +/-

That plus a 19oz bolt seems about right little under 2.2 lbs. I've been soaking in an article by a fellow named Chinn, he calculates it at around 2.8 lbs. Couple excerpts: "The 10mm level of power really represents the upper level of the blowback action due to the necessary weight of the bolt. Any more power and the bolt becomes so massive that the weapon becomes cumbersome, the exact opposite direction we want to go. If we add a locking mechanism, the complexity of design goes up, again not the direction we want to go. The 10mm shows its excellence by delivering the most force out the barrel controlled by a bolt weight within a reasonable consideration." “NOTE: There is one point which requires special clarification at this time. In many descriptions of blowback actions, it is strongly implied that the driving spring contributes a substantial portion of the resistance which limits acceleration imparted to the bolt by the powder gases. Actually, this is not so. Although it is true that the driving spring absorbs the kinetic energy of the recoiling bolt and thus limits the total distance it moves, the resistance of the spring does not have any real effect in the early phase of the cycle of operation. The bolt acceleration occurs mainly while the powder gas pressures are high and are exerting a force of many thousands of pounds on the bolt. The driving spring, in order to permit the bolt to open enough to allow feeding, must offer a relatively low resistance. Although this resistance is sufficient to absorb the bolt energy over the comparatively great distance through which the bolt moves in recoil, it is not great enough to offer significant opposition to the powder gas pressure until the chamber pressure has dropped to a relatively low level well after the projectile has left the muzzle.” Good article, The American PDW https://10mmautocombat.wordpress.com/blowback-bolt-calculations/
