What do you have on order or in the mail? Part 2
MtnMike replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
LaRue MST 2 stage trigger due to arrive 2/3; Pelican desert tan, 1720 Protector case due to arrive 2/7; 4 Magpul 20 round magazines due to arrive 2/7; 200 rounds PPU 165g soft points due today (but doesn't look like they've left Midway yet); Daniel Defense butt stock got here yesterday. I'm declaring February No Purchasing Appreciation month. At least the range at Cold Mountain is free. -
@Lonewolf McQuade Turns out the Pelican site itself was not a bad deal. Free shipping and I easily found a coupon code for 15% off ("birge15"). That gets you a 42" Protector case delivered for just under $230 - pretax.

Think I'll stick w/ using TW25B for the trigger as recommended by LaRue. I did order a bottle of @JBMatt 's oil from the above-link and will give it a whirl. (I'm a sucker for free shipping w/FJB gas prices). New Windham came well-oiled from factory and put less than a 100 rounds through it during initial range trial. Figure I'll go back later this week after mods are complete, put a few hundred through her and give her a good and proper cleaning and lube.

You guys are making sense. Thinking about my own behavior - I've always carried my traditional hunting rifles in hard case (admittedly cheap Flambeau cases), basically thinking to protect the scopes. Guess I started toting black rifles (ar15s) in soft cases, treating them more like shotguns. But my AR308 IS a hunting rifle and the scope on it approaches or exceeds the cost and capabilities of what I have on my bolt action rifles. Time to give it due respect.

Wondered if anyone had any experience, positive or negative with Mil-Comm TW25B. Just bought a trigger, and it's what LaRue usually carries. They were out, but I found it easily on Amazon. Also an NC company, and I like to support local businesses.

Plano case at about $150 looks like a decent option. Made in USA - based on weight probably not as strong as a US made Pelican version and no wheels. Got stop coffee shopping ..

This thread made me a bit embarrassed about toting my new AR308 rifle (my old man, I swear this is my last gun project) around in a soft case I pilfered from a previous AR15 project.. So I went over to the Pelican site to look around. Holy moly are those things expensive. $400 and up for case and foam. I've been real particular that everything on my rifle is made in the USA, but I might end up going Chinese Harbor freight on a hard case at $165 - or just stick with my soft case and stay off planes. Well - this is a thread on value... BTW Pelican does have a pretty cool design your own foam feature where they will make the cut-outs

LaRue MBT2 flat bow.

I promise I'll work on improving my photo skills. That's a quick snap w/ the phone and things got resized and cropped. Can't let the wife seeing me taking porn pics. Then she'd might realize there is a new black gun in the house!

Just got a Windham R16SFST-308 & took it out for its initial range trip.. Only change made to rifle out of the box was replacing the standard, somewhat rattly and wobbly buttstock with a Magpul MOE ML from another gun and adding Leupold 3 x 9 VX Freedom. Shot 4 brands & 3 weights of ammo w/o any issues. Initial sight-in w/ two boxes of 150 g soft points. Last 3 shot groupings of 150 were 1 – 1.5” at 100. Switched to 168 g Sierra Matchking HPBT and Federal 180 g powershok soft points. 4 of last 5 groups were <1” at 100 yards 1 group of 180 was 2.5”, but I was getting frustrated with trigger at the time. Gun was overall excellent for just out of the box. Trigger is crap. Extremely long creep or take-up, indefinite wall, heavy. Plan to replace trigger. Also, have purchased a muzzle brake even though recoil really was not bad for a gun of this weight.

Even better to know. Thanks!

Nice to know! Rifle has been shipped, so I hope to have it by the end of the week. Already have the scope and mount. Muzzle brake should be here tomorrow. Looks like the last thing I will be waiting on are the shim washers to properly time the brake. Have several different brands and weights of ammo to work with to see if the gun has a preference. Once I've got it dialed in, I might sign up for one of their sessions Doesn't look like you can use their range except in conjunction with a training session from their website.

Never tried that .. and it is time for Sunday breakfast!

Looks just like my old Browning Hi-Power that has been sitting neglected in the safe for too long. Have to wonder if the FN triggers will work with the old Brownings. Only complaint I ever had with that pistol was a mushy, crunchy trigger. Damn accurate and would eat any ammo I ever fed it. Sorry to hear about the issues with the adult children. I've been blessed with two grown, happily married daughters that were a helluva lot less trouble than their dear old dad. My only 2 cents comes from my own personal experience as a FU in my younger days - I learned less when someone bailed me out and cleaned up my mess, than when I had to learn to sit in it.

What is VOD? I do spend visit Old Fort from time to time for work reasons and wouldn't be opposed to working in some shooting time!

Thanks you all for the welcome. I hear you on the stock concerns. I'm not rushing to do anything until I've spent some time and get the feel of the rifle. I'm using a lightweight non-illuminated Leupold scope to start with, so the total weight (without magazine and freedom pills) should still be under 9#. Which I'm guessing is within a 1/2# of the .270 Rem 700 BDL set up I currently use for hunting with no complaints. I saw the Minimalist stock on a POF Revolution that I considered. The POFs are about the lightest weight AR308's I ran across that were fully assembled and available. Really liked the engineering of the POFs, but their company's founder and chief engineer passed in 2020 and I ran into a lot of posts where folks had had issues with the guns and were none too pleased with POF's.

Wondered how the build was going and what your total final weight came to.

New to the forum. I m just west (and a good right) of Asheville proper. Found the forum when looking for info on a couple different AR308 rifles I was considering. Ended up purchasing a Windham Weaponry R16SFST-308. Seemed like a good choice for my goals of (1) something light enough I could use for deer/pig hunting & (2) upping my capabilities in the event of a zombie apocalypse or other poop hitting the fan scenario. Only modification I'm planning out of the gate is replacing the A2 with a Precision Armament’s M4-72 Severe-Duty Compensator. Less than 1 oz difference in weight with reportedly a significant kick reduction. Still waiting on both. Delivery moving at the speed of COVID. Thinking about replacing the stock with an MFT Battlelink Minimalist stock at 6 oz and maybe replacing the trigger. But I want to shoot it for a bit first to see how it feels and performs.

Asheville area. Candler/Biltmore Lake area to be more precise. Always open to meeting new folks.
